Amtico vs Karndean: Which Luxury Vinyl Flooring Brand Should You Choose?
Amtico and Karndean are the two most compared luxury vinyl flooring brands in the UK — and for good reason. Both are premium, both are manufactured to a high standard, and both require professional installation through approved retailers to validate their warranties. If you are choosing between them, you are already looking at the right end of the market.
At Grosvenor Flooring we are approved retailers for both Amtico and Karndean, and we stock every range from both brands. This puts us in a genuinely neutral position — we have no commercial incentive to push you towards one over the other. This guide is written to help you make that decision based on what actually matters: specification, design range, warranty, price and practical suitability for your home.

Durability: Wear Layers and Warranties
The single most useful metric when comparing LVT durability is wear layer thickness — the protective surface layer that determines how the floor handles daily traffic, furniture, pets and general life over the years. Both brands cover a similar spectrum, but the internal structure of their range ladders differs.
Entry level (0.3mm wear layer): Amtico First and Karndean Knight Tile both sit here. At this specification, either brand is well suited to bedrooms, living rooms and lower-traffic areas. Neither should be a first choice for busy hallways or kitchens without considering a step up in spec.
Mid-range (0.55mm wear layer): Amtico Spacia and Karndean Van Gogh are the closest equivalents. This is the sweet spot for most homeowners — tough enough for kitchens, hallways and family rooms while still being firmly residential in price. Spacia comes with a 20-year warranty; Van Gogh carries Karndean’s standard residential warranty. Both are proven performers.
Premium (0.7mm wear layer): Amtico Form and Karndean Art Select compete here. Form adds integrated antimicrobial protection and a 30-year warranty. Art Select counters with larger plank formats, premium surface detailing and enhanced parquet options. Both are excellent — the choice at this level often comes down to design preference rather than durability.
Top tier (1.0mm wear layer): Amtico Signature stands alone here. No Karndean residential range matches the 1.0mm wear layer and lifetime residential warranty that Signature offers. If you want the absolute highest specification residential LVT available in the UK, Amtico Signature is in a class of its own.
Both brands also apply proprietary surface coatings — Amtico uses Quantum Guard (and Quantum Guard Elite on higher ranges), while Karndean applies its own K-Guard+ surface protection. In everyday use, both coatings resist scratches, scuffs and staining effectively. The practical difference for most homes is negligible.
Design Range and Flexibility
This is where personal preference plays the biggest role, and where Amtico genuinely pulls ahead.
Amtico offers one of the widest design libraries in UK LVT. Across its six collections, the range covers wood, stone and abstract effects in a broad spectrum of colours, tones and textures. The standout differentiator is Signature, which gives access to the full Designers’ Choice pattern library — 45+ bespoke laying patterns including Versailles Parquet, Castel Weave, Chantilly Weave, Halcyon Pleat and Grand Flagstone. Karndean has nothing equivalent at this scale. If your project calls for a complex pattern floor, Amtico Signature is effectively the only premium LVT option. See our Amtico laying patterns guide for the full pattern range.
Karndean is known for highly realistic, natural-looking wood and stone designs. The texture and surface detailing on ranges like Van Gogh and Art Select is exceptionally good — Karndean’s reputation for authentic wood effects is well earned. The palette tends slightly more traditional and warm-toned than Amtico’s, which can lean more contemporary. Palio Essenza adds a distinct Italian-inspired direction that nothing in the Amtico range directly matches.
For herringbone and parquet layouts, both brands are strong. Amtico Signature offers the most extensive bespoke options, while Karndean Art Select and Van Gogh deliver dedicated herringbone planks that install beautifully in a more conventional (non-bespoke) format. Our dedicated Amtico herringbone laying patterns guide covers the Amtico side of this comparison in detail.
Click vs Glue-Down: Installation Options
Both brands offer click-format alternatives alongside their traditional glue-down ranges:
- Amtico: Amtico Click Smart is the brand’s rigid core SPC option, with a built-in acoustic underlay and click-lock installation. Well suited to renovations and rooms where a floating floor is preferable.
- Karndean: Knight Tile Rigid Core and Van Gogh Rigid Core provide two click-format options at different specification levels — giving Karndean a slight edge in click-format range breadth.
If click installation is important to you, Karndean currently offers more variety across two price points, while Amtico consolidates its click offer into the single Click Smart product. Both are waterproof, both include acoustic backing, and both are designed for quick-turnaround installations.
For traditional glue-down installation — which produces the flattest, most seamless finish — both brands are at their strongest. All glue-down Amtico and Karndean ranges are compatible with underfloor heating (wet and electric, subject to a 27°C surface temperature limit).
Price
Both Amtico and Karndean are sold on a request-a-price basis at Grosvenor Flooring — neither brand displays public pricing online. What we can say from experience is that the two brands occupy a similar premium price bracket, with pricing that varies by range, format and project size.
At the entry level, Amtico First and Karndean Knight Tile are comparably priced. At the mid-range, Amtico Spacia and Karndean Van Gogh are in the same territory. The premium end is where Amtico pulls ahead on specification — Signature’s 1.0mm wear layer and lifetime warranty command a price premium that reflects the product’s position at the very top of the residential LVT market. Our Amtico flooring prices guide covers the full breakdown, including how laying pattern choice affects fitted cost.
If both brands are stretching your budget, our Amtico alternative guide covers four LVT ranges that deliver a similar look at a lower price point — worth reading before you commit either way.
The best approach is to request a price for both brands once you have narrowed your preferred range and design. We quote on a per-project basis and, where you have a competing quote from another retailer, we will do our best to beat it.
Warranty — What Actually Matters
Both Amtico and Karndean tie their manufacturer warranties to professional installation by an approved retailer. This is not a formality — if you buy either brand from a non-approved source or install it yourself, the warranty is void. As an approved retailer for both brands, Grosvenor Flooring validates the full manufacturer warranty on every Amtico and Karndean floor we supply and fit.
Amtico’s warranty structure is more transparent in its tiering: 15 years (First), 20 years (Spacia, Click Smart), 30 years (Form) and lifetime (Signature). Karndean uses slightly different warranty language across its ranges, with enhanced terms on Art Select and standard residential cover on Knight Tile and Van Gogh. In both cases, the warranty covers manufacturing defects and wear performance under normal residential conditions — not damage from misuse, flooding or improper installation.
Which Brand Should You Choose?
Choose Amtico if:
- You want the highest specification available — Amtico Signature (1.0mm wear layer, lifetime warranty) has no direct Karndean equivalent.
- Design customisation and bespoke layouts are important — the Designers’ Choice pattern library is unmatched, with 45+ bespoke layouts including Versailles Parquet, Castel Weave and Grand Flagstone.
- You value UK manufacturing — Amtico is made in Coventry.
- You want a single brand that covers everything from entry-level through to lifetime-warranted premium in a clear, tiered structure.
Choose Karndean if:
- You prefer highly realistic, natural-looking wood and stone effects — Karndean’s surface texturing is exceptional.
- You want more choice in click-format flooring — Knight Tile Rigid Core and Van Gogh Rigid Core give two specification levels in SPC click.
- A traditional or warm-toned aesthetic suits your home better than a contemporary palette.
- You want a distinct Italian-inspired option — Palio Essenza has no direct Amtico equivalent.
For most homeowners comparing at the 0.55mm mid-range level — Amtico Spacia vs Karndean Van Gogh — the performance difference is minimal. The deciding factor at this level is almost always which designs you prefer. That is best settled by seeing them in person.
See Both Brands Side by Side
The most useful thing you can do when choosing between Amtico and Karndean is see them displayed at full scale, in the same space, under the same lighting. Our Altrincham showroom has both brands on display across all ranges — and the showroom is open 24/7 with smart showroom access, so you can visit at a time that suits you without needing an appointment.
For customers outside the Altrincham area, we supply both brands nationwide. Contact us via our enquiry form, WhatsApp or by phone to request a price — we typically respond the same working day. When you get in touch, it helps to have your room measurements and any designs you have shortlisted, and if you have a competing quote from another retailer, let us know — we will do our best to beat it.
