4mm Thick Luxury Vinyl Flooring

4mm is the entry point into rigid-core LVT. It is the thinnest click-lock format on the market, built on an SPC (stone-polymer composite) core rather than a dryback backing, which means 4mm is the thinnest thickness a customer can realistically retrofit over an existing hard floor. The step from 3mm dryback up to 4mm rigid core is the single biggest construction change in the LVT category — everything below 4mm glues down; everything from 4mm up clicks together.

4mm’s appeal is simple: it adds retrofit capability without adding meaningful height. It fits under doors and into transitions that thicker 5–6mm rigid-core formats struggle with, and it gives you a click-lock floating floor on a low profile. See samples in person at the 24/7 smart-lock Altrincham showroom or send us a competitor quote for a same-working-day price check.

What Does 4mm Thickness Actually Mean?

4mm (4 millimetre) is the total board thickness of a rigid-core click-lock plank or tile — from the bottom of the SPC core to the top of the wear layer. The construction is a rigid stone-polymer composite core with a printed design layer and clear PVC wear layer bonded on top, and a precision-milled click-lock edge profile for floating-floor installation. There is no glue involved; the planks lock together mechanically and float on the subfloor.

4mm in the Thickness Ladder

4mm is the rigid-core entry point. Below it are all the dryback glue-down formats (2mm, 2.5mm, 3mm) which bond directly to the subfloor. Above it are progressively thicker rigid-core formats — 4.5mm, 5mm, 5.5mm and beyond — which add acoustic underlays, heavier cores, and better retrofit capability over uneven floors. 4mm sits at the bottom of the rigid-core ladder because it is the thinnest thickness a click-lock edge can reliably hold without flex or failure.

Installation Format: Rigid-Core Click

4mm is a click-lock floating floor — the planks snap together via a precision-milled edge profile and float on the subfloor without glue or adhesive. Installation requires a flat, clean, dry subfloor (not necessarily level in the way a dryback glue-down does, but free of high spots greater than the manufacturer’s tolerance). A 2mm foam or acoustic underlay is laid first, then the planks click together on top. This is the format that enables retrofit over existing hard floors (tile, laminate, engineered wood) without lifting the old floor first.

Underfloor Heating Compatibility

4mm rigid core is compatible with wet and electric underfloor heating up to 27°C surface temperature, but heat transfer is slower than glue-down dryback because of the air gap under the floating floor. If UFH is the primary heat source in the room, ask us about thinner dryback alternatives (3mm Van Gogh or Art Select) for more efficient heat transfer. If UFH is secondary comfort heating, 4mm rigid core is fine.

Thickness Does Not Determine Durability — Wear Layer Does

This is the most important sentence on the page: **thickness and durability are not the same thing.** A 4mm rigid-core with a 0.3mm wear layer is no more durable in everyday use than a 2.5mm Amtico Spacia with the same 0.3mm wear layer — the difference is retrofit capability and core construction, not wear resistance. If durability is your concern, compare the wear-layer spec, not the total board height. See our 0.3mm wear layer guide for what this spec delivers in domestic use.
