Random Length Engineered Wood Plank Flooring
Random length plank is the default specification for premium engineered oak floors. Each pack contains a mix of board lengths, so the seam pattern across the finished floor is irregular and natural rather than rhythmic — the way a traditional timber floor was always laid. It is the format most buyers picture when they think of a real wood floor, and it is what we recommend for almost every whole-house plank project.
At Grosvenor Flooring we cover the random length plank category through GF Engineered Wood Planks and the full V4 Wood Flooring library — including Alpine for rustic-grade boards, Driftwood for extra-long brushed planks and Heritage for traditional planks.

Random Length vs Fixed Length
Random length packs contain boards of varying lengths — typically a mix of short, medium and long planks — and the resulting floor has an irregular, traditional feel. Fixed length packs contain boards of one length only and read as more uniform and modern. Random length is the more common specification for premium oak ranges and the natural choice when you want the floor to look like a properly laid traditional plank.
Construction
Multi-ply core for dimensional stability, real European oak wear layer typically 3mm to 6mm thick. UFH compatible. Refinishable years down the line.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why choose random-length over fixed-length planks?
Random-length is closer to how solid-wood floors were traditionally laid — mixed board lengths break up sightlines, hide room irregularities, and give a softer, lived-in feel. It's the default choice for period properties, cottages and rustic interiors.
How many different lengths come in a pack?
It varies by range, but most random-length packs contain three to five different board lengths, weighted so the average works out to a practical installation length. Check the individual product page for exact breakdowns.
Does random-length cost less than fixed-length?
Often yes — because manufacturers can use shorter offcuts productively, random-length ranges are usually a few pounds per square metre cheaper than their fixed-length equivalents at the same thickness and grade.
