Loose Lay LVT Flooring

Loose lay LVT is the third LVT installation format alongside glue down and click. The planks are heavier than standard LVT with a high-friction backing that grips the subfloor without adhesive – so the floor sits in place under its own weight. It is the format used by commercial fit-out specialists and retail designers who need to be able to lift individual planks for access to subfloor services and increasingly by domestic customers who want a fast, low-disruption refit on a sound existing floor.

At Grosvenor Flooring we cover the loose lay category with curated picks from Karndean, Project Floors and the Polyflor commercial range. Browse the collection below or contact us via our enquiry form, WhatsApp or phone for advice – and visit the Altrincham showroom to see the ranges in person.

What Is Loose Lay LVT?

Loose lay LVT is luxury vinyl tile manufactured to a heavier-than-normal weight – typically 4.5mm to 5mm thick – with a coarse, high-friction backing layer designed to grip the subfloor without adhesive. The planks are simply cut to size and laid in place; no glue, no click joint, no expansion gap, no underlay. A small bead of perimeter adhesive or a tackifier may be used in larger rooms to anchor the field, but the bulk of the floor floats free under its own weight. Lifting and replacing a damaged plank is faster and cleaner than with any other LVT format, which is exactly why commercial designers like it.

The Loose Lay Collections We Stock

Amtico Access is Amtico’s commercial loose-lay collection, a 5.0mm tile with a 0.55mm wear layer designed to be lifted for access to subfloor services. Karndean’s commercial loose lay range is the most-specified loose lay product in the UK and the one we recommend by default for office, retail and hospitality projects. Project Floors offers a contract-grade German alternative for designers and architects. Polyflor – see Polyflor Camaro and the wider Polyflor catalogue – is the third option for heavy commercial projects.

Key Takeaways

  • Loose-lay LVT is the third format alongside glue-down and click: heavier planks, typically around 4.5mm to 5mm with a high-friction backing that grips the subfloor without adhesive, so the floor sits under its own weight and individual planks lift out for access.
  • It is mainly a commercial format (offices, retail and hospitality) where access to subfloor services matters, or a fast domestic retrofit on a sound, flat existing floor; for kitchens and bathrooms we recommend glue-down instead.
  • The ranges we stock are Amtico Access (5.0mm, 0.55mm wear), Karndean commercial loose lay, Project Floors and Polyflor, all Request a Price.
  • A perimeter tackifier anchors larger rooms, but the subfloor still has to be flat, dry and clean because undulations telegraph through.

Loose Lay vs Glue Down vs Click

Glue down LVT is the most stable and the right choice for premium domestic and any wet-room project. Click LVT is the right choice for retrofits where lifting the existing floor is impractical. Loose lay is the right choice for commercial spaces where access to subfloor services is critical, or for very fast retrofits on a sound, flat existing floor.

Where to Use Loose Lay LVT

Loose lay is most commonly specified in offices and retail spaces where subfloor access matters. In domestic projects it can work well in lounges, dining rooms, bedrooms and hallways on a sound, flat existing floor. For kitchens and bathrooms we recommend glue down instead.

Underfloor Heating

Most loose lay ranges are compatible with both wet and electric UFH up to a maximum surface temperature of 27C, but always confirm the specific range against the manufacturer’s installation guide. Loose lay can be a good UFH choice on retrofits because the lack of adhesive simplifies any future repair.

Installation Notes

Loose lay is the fastest LVT format to install, but the subfloor still has to be flat, dry and clean – undulations will telegraph through. For larger rooms a perimeter tackifier is recommended to keep the field anchored. Our own teams handle loose lay installs across Cheshire and South Manchester from the Altrincham showroom.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Looselay LVT stay in place without adhesive?

Loose-lay planks are heavier than standard LVT and have a coarse, high-friction backing that grips the subfloor, so the floor sits in place under its own weight with no glue, click joint or underlay. In larger rooms a bead of perimeter adhesive or a tackifier is used to anchor the field, but most of the floor floats free.

What thickness is loose lay LVT?

Loose-lay LVT is made heavier than standard LVT, typically around 4.5mm to 5mm thick, which is part of how it grips the subfloor without adhesive. Amtico Access, for example, is a 5.0mm tile with a 0.55mm wear layer.

Is Looselay LVT suitable for bathrooms and kitchens?

For a bathroom or kitchen we recommend glue-down instead. Loose-lay has no continuous adhesive bond or sealed perimeter, so it is less suited to wet areas where water can reach the floor edge. Loose-lay is best kept to offices, retail and dry domestic rooms such as lounges, bedrooms and hallways on a sound, flat floor.

Is loose lay LVT suitable for a home and is it DIY-friendly?

Yes, loose-lay can work well in a home on a sound, flat existing floor and it is the fastest LVT format to fit because there is no adhesive or click joint. It suits a low-disruption retrofit in a lounge, bedroom or hallway. The subfloor still needs to be flat and clean and a professional fit gives the best long-term result.

What is the main difference between Looselay and Click LVT?

Click LVT locks together mechanically into a floating raft with a perimeter expansion gap, whereas loose-lay planks are separate and held by their own weight and high-friction backing with no joints between them. Loose-lay makes lifting and replacing a single plank easier, which is why commercial designers favour it for subfloor access.
