0.7mm Wear Layer LVT Flooring

A 0.7mm wear layer is the spec point at which luxury vinyl tile crosses out of mainstream domestic territory and into heavy-domestic and light-commercial use. It is the wear layer designers and architects specify for boutique retail, café fit-outs, busy family homes with dogs and children, holiday lets that turn over weekly, and any room where the floor is going to be punished more than a normal living room. At Grosvenor Flooring we stock 0.7mm-rated LVT from every premium brand we carry, and we use it as the default specification on supply-and-fit projects from our Altrincham showroom when the customer wants a floor that will still look new in fifteen years.

If your project sits anywhere on the line between “premium home” and “small commercial”, 0.7mm is almost always the right call. The step up from 0.55mm is meaningful and the price difference is smaller than most customers expect. Talk a project through with us via our enquiry form, WhatsApp or phone.

What Does a 0.7mm Wear Layer Mean?

The wear layer on an LVT plank is the clear protective film that sits on top of the printed design layer and absorbs every footstep, scuff and scratch the floor takes over its lifetime. A 0.7mm (700 micron) wear layer is roughly 27% thicker than the 0.55mm wear layer used on Karndean’s premium domestic ranges, and roughly 30% thinner than the 1mm wear layer used on Amtico Signature and Invictus Maximus. It is the heavy-domestic / light-commercial sweet spot — enough top film to handle real-world abuse for two decades or more, without the price premium of full commercial-grade 1mm spec.

Which Rooms Is 0.7mm LVT Rated For?

0.7mm LVT is rated for heavy domestic and light commercial use. In practice that covers: family kitchens with high foot traffic and pets, open-plan kitchen-diners, busy hallways and entrance halls, utility rooms and boot rooms, holiday lets and Airbnbs, hairdressers and beauty salons, boutique retail, small offices, café floors and hospitality back-of-house. It is also the wear layer we recommend if a customer wants a single LVT specification to run continuously across a whole ground floor including a kitchen and a hallway — 0.7mm has the headroom to take the worst-traffic zone without compromise.

Brand Ranges We Stock at 0.7mm

Amtico Access is Amtico’s commercial-loose-lay range built for fast-fit retail and office work, sitting at the heavy-traffic end of Amtico’s library. Invictus Primus is the European mid-commercial Invictus tier — rigid-core construction with a heavy wear layer designed for hospitality and contract use. Project Floors contract ranges (Wood Plank Collection, Herringbone, Chevron) are German-engineered glue-down LVT specified by architects for heavy-spec residential and contract jobs and sit naturally in the 0.7mm bracket. Specifications change between collections — confirm the exact wear layer of any individual product with us before ordering, and we will pull the manufacturer spec sheet for you.

0.7mm vs 0.55mm vs 1mm — How to Choose

The decision tree is straightforward. 0.55mm is the right answer for a normal premium family home — Karndean Art Select and Van Gogh have been the British market default for two decades for exactly this reason. Step up to 0.7mm if the room you are flooring is taking commercial-grade traffic in a domestic setting (large family with pets, holiday let, kitchen-as-thoroughfare) or genuinely light commercial use. Step up again to 1mm for full commercial — restaurants, busy retail, hospitality public areas — or if you simply want the longest-lasting LVT money can buy in a domestic setting. The price gap between 0.55mm and 1mm is real but smaller than most customers expect once you factor in that the heavier wear layer typically lasts twice as long.

Underfloor Heating Compatibility

Every 0.7mm-rated LVT range we stock is compatible with both wet and electric underfloor heating up to a maximum surface temperature of 27°C, provided the manufacturer’s installation instructions are followed and the boxes are acclimatised in the room for at least 48 hours before fitting. The heavier wear layer makes no difference to UFH compatibility — what matters is the install format, which is why we default to glue down for any room with underfloor heating.

Installation Notes

Most 0.7mm LVT is sold either as glue-down or as click rigid-core. Both are unforgiving on subfloor preparation; the heavier wear layer does nothing to mask an uneven floor underneath. Our supply-and-fit teams across Cheshire and South Manchester handle the prep, the levelling compound, the priming and the install on every project, and the warranty position is much cleaner when the install is in-house. For nationwide customers we are happy to advise on what to look for when choosing a local fitter for a heavy-spec product.

Where 0.7mm LVT Sits in the Library

0.7mm is the most under-specified wear layer in the British retail market. Most consumer-facing flooring sites push customers toward 0.3mm or 0.55mm because that is where the bulk of the volume sits, and skip the heavier-spec ranges entirely. If you have been quoted a “premium” LVT at 0.55mm for a busy kitchen-diner with a dog, it is worth asking your retailer what the 0.7mm equivalent would cost — the answer is usually not much more, and the floor will easily outlast the next kitchen refit.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I choose LVT with a 0.7mm wear layer over a 0.55mm wear layer?

You should choose a 0.7mm wear layer for projects that demand the absolute highest level of durability and longevity. While 0.55mm is excellent for most commercial settings, a 0.7mm wear layer is the superior choice for high-footfall public spaces, industrial environments, or for a residential floor where you want a truly 'fit and forget' solution that will last for many decades.

Is LVT with a 0.7mm wear layer suitable for a family home?

Yes, it is an exceptional choice for a family home. While it may be considered 'over-engineered' for some residential needs, it provides the ultimate protection against everything from pets and children to heavy furniture. This is the flooring for those who want a lifetime guarantee of durability and a pristine appearance.

Does the extra thickness of the wear layer affect the appearance of the floor?

No, the thickness of the wear layer is a clear, transparent coating that sits over the design layer. A thicker wear layer does not change the visual appearance of the floor but significantly enhances its resistance to abrasion, scratches, and other forms of surface damage, ensuring the design remains protected for a longer period.
