AMTICO STRIPPING: SIZES, COLOURS & QUANTITY CALCULATOR

Amtico stripping (also known as Amtico feature stripping) is a thin decorative inlay that runs between Amtico planks or tiles to add contrast, create a grout-style effect, or define plank and tile shapes within a laying pattern. It is available in five widths — 3mm, 6mm, 9mm, 13mm and 19mm, all 914mm long — at a 2mm thickness, in 16 colours spanning warm woods, cool concretes, stone effects and polished metallics. Stripping can be installed with every Amtico glue-down collection: Signature, Form, Spacia, First and the commercial Access range. Stripping is not compatible with Amtico Click Smart because the rigid-core click mechanism does not allow strips to be bonded between planks.

This page covers what Amtico stripping is, every available size and colour, how to calculate how much you need, and where to see it in person. As an approved Amtico retailer in Altrincham, Grosvenor Flooring supplies and fits Amtico stripping across Cheshire and South Manchester, with full Amtico ranges and stripping samples on display in our 24/7 Smart Showroom.

WHAT IS AMTICO STRIPPING?

Stripping is one of the design features that distinguishes Amtico from most other luxury vinyl flooring brands. Instead of laying planks and tiles flush against each other, your fitter inserts a thin strip of complementary or contrasting material between them — rather like grout between ceramic tiles, but produced by Amtico from the same LVT material as the floor itself.

The effect can be subtle or dramatic depending on the colour and width you choose:

  • A grout effect — a thin neutral strip (3mm or 6mm in a soft grey, concrete or putty tone) that mimics traditional ceramic tile grout, making large-format LVT tiles look closer to a real stone or terrazzo finish.
  • Defined plank or tile shapes — a contrast-toned strip that visually outlines each plank or tile, useful in herringbone, basketweave and other geometric laying patterns where you want the pattern itself to read more clearly.
  • A bold contrast feature — a wider strip (13mm or 19mm) in a darker, lighter or metallic finish, used to create deliberate banding within a floor, frame a room, or pick out the edges of a zone within an open-plan space.

Stripping is supplied bevelled, so the joins between strip and plank are deliberate rather than accidental. Because it is the same 2mm-thickness LVT material as the floor it is bonded into, it wears identically and is just as easy to clean and maintain.

AMTICO STRIPPING SIZES

Amtico produces stripping in five widths, all 914mm long and 2mm thick. The smallest size (3mm) is the readily stocked product across all 16 colours; wider sizes are typically supplied to order for projects that want a more dramatic effect.

WidthLengthBest Suited For
3mm914mmA subtle grout-style line between tiles; the closest approximation to traditional grouting. Most popular choice for stone-effect LVT in kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms.
6mm914mmA slightly more pronounced grout effect; useful where the LVT tile size is larger (305 x 610mm and above) and a thicker line keeps the proportions correct.
9mm914mmA deliberate design line rather than a grout effect — visible at a glance and ideal for picking out individual planks or tile shapes in a complex laying pattern.
13mm914mmA bold inset band — often used to frame a zone within an open-plan room or to create regular banding across a long hallway.
19mm914mmThe widest option; a strong contrast feature that reads almost as an additional plank in the laying pattern. Most often specified in commercial and statement residential projects.

Sizes are nominal; the precise measurements are 3.2mm, 6.4mm, 9.5mm, 12.7mm and 19.1mm (the imperial conversions of 1/8″, 1/4″, 3/8″, 1/2″ and 3/4″).

AMTICO STRIPPING COLOURS

There are 16 stripping colours across four broad families. Most are available in both Straight Grain and Cross Grain options; the three Polished Metal finishes are only available in Straight Grain.

Warm and Cool Woods

Wood-tone stripping designed to coordinate with Amtico wood-effect planks — useful when you want a subtle line between planks rather than a contrast.

  • Ashdown Oak — a natural mid-tone oak finish
  • Cirrus Air — a light, airy oak tick finish
  • Dark Walnut — a deep walnut tick finish for strong contrast against pale woods
  • Wild Walnut — a richer walnut tone with more visible grain

Concretes and Stones

Neutral mid-tone strips for stone-effect tiles, industrial-look interiors, and grout-effect installations.

  • Woolwich Concrete — a mid-grey concrete tone
  • Deptford Concrete — a slightly warmer concrete finish
  • Concrete Pale — the lightest concrete option, near-white
  • Stucco Putty — a soft putty/cream finish, ideal for traditional grout effect
  • Modernist Frame — a sharper, more architectural grey

Stria and Stone Effects

Stronger character strips that read as a design feature rather than a grout substitute.

  • Stria Volcanic — a deep dark grey with subtle banded texture
  • Stria Basalt — a near-black basalt finish
  • Mirabelle Crème — a creamy off-white with delicate markings
  • Pure Plain Black — the strongest contrast option for bold framing

Polished Metals (Straight Grain only)

Metallic strips for high-end residential and commercial installations — reflective, statement-making and limited to Straight Grain only.

  • Polished Silver
  • Polished Copper
  • Polished Gold

The full set of 16 stripping colours is available to view in person at our Altrincham showroom — ask any visitor and we will lay sample strips against your chosen Amtico plank or tile so you can judge the effect at full scale.

WHICH AMTICO COLLECTIONS WORK WITH STRIPPING?

Amtico stripping is compatible with the entire Amtico glue-down range. The strips are cut to length on site and bonded into the subfloor adhesive between planks and tiles as the floor is laid. This is the only installation method that works for stripping — the strips need to be bonded to the subfloor, not clicked together.

The compatible glue-down collections are:

  • Amtico Signature — the premium 1.0mm wear-layer range
  • Amtico Form — the 0.7mm wear-layer premium range with distinctive design
  • Amtico Spacia — the mid-range 0.55mm wear-layer collection
  • Amtico First — the entry-level 0.3mm wear-layer range
  • Amtico Access — the commercial loose-lay collection

Stripping cannot be installed with Amtico Click Smart. Click Smart is a rigid-core click product where each plank locks into the next using a tongue-and-groove mechanism on every edge; there is no way to bond strips between planks without breaking that connection. If stripping is important to your design, choose one of the glue-down collections above.

The choice of glue-down collection affects the look as much as the choice of stripping itself. The Amtico Signature 1.0mm wear layer, for example, gives the floor a slightly different sheen and warmth than the 0.55mm wear layer ranges, which can change how subtle or pronounced a particular strip colour reads. The fastest way to know is to see them side by side — which is exactly what our showroom is set up for.

AMTICO STRIPPING CALCULATOR — HOW TO WORK OUT HOW MUCH YOU NEED

Stripping is sold in boxes of 250 strips per box (each strip 914mm long). The number of boxes required for your project depends on three things: the size of your room in square metres, the size of the plank or tile you are using, and how many sides of each plank or tile will have stripping bonded alongside.

The simplest approach is to use the quantity table below, which is calculated for stripping along all sides of each plank or tile. If your design uses stripping along only one or two sides, divide the result accordingly.

Step 1: Measure Your Room

Measure the length and width of the room in metres and multiply to get the total area in square metres. For non-rectangular rooms, divide the floor plan into rectangular sections, calculate each separately, and add them together.

Step 2: Identify the Plank or Tile Size You Are Using

Each Amtico plank or tile is supplied in a specific size, listed on the product page or sample. The table below covers the eleven most common Amtico plank and tile dimensions.

Step 3: Use the Quantity Table

Find your total area down the left-hand column, your plank or tile size across the top, and read the number of boxes of 3mm x 914mm stripping required at the intersection. Round up to the next whole box — stripping is sold only in full boxes, not part-boxes.

The figures above are calculated for stripping along all sides of each plank or tile, and do not include an allowance for wastage. For best results, add approximately 10% to the calculated quantity to allow for cuts, joins and on-site adjustments. If your design uses stripping along only one or two sides of each plank, the box count can be reduced proportionally — speak to our team for an accurate calculation tied to your specific layout.

If you would prefer us to calculate stripping quantities for you as part of a fitted-flooring quote, get in touch with your room dimensions, your chosen plank or tile size, and how you want the stripping laid out — we will return a full quantity and price.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Amtico stripping?

Amtico stripping is a thin decorative LVT inlay that runs between Amtico planks or tiles to add contrast, define plank and tile shapes, or create a grout-style effect. It is supplied in 16 colours across five widths (3mm, 6mm, 9mm, 13mm and 19mm), all 914mm long and 2mm thick, and can be used with every Amtico collection.

What sizes does Amtico stripping come in?

Five widths: 3mm, 6mm, 9mm, 13mm and 19mm (precisely 3.2mm, 6.4mm, 9.5mm, 12.7mm and 19.1mm — the imperial-converted measurements). All strips are 914mm long and 2mm thick. The 3mm x 914mm size is the readily stocked option across all colours; wider sizes are typically supplied to order.

How many colours of Amtico stripping are available?

Sixteen colours grouped into four families: warm and cool woods (Ashdown Oak, Cirrus Air, Dark Walnut, Wild Walnut); concretes and stones (Woolwich Concrete, Deptford Concrete, Concrete Pale, Stucco Putty, Modernist Frame); stria and stone effects (Stria Volcanic, Stria Basalt, Mirabelle Crème, Pure Plain Black); and polished metals (Polished Silver, Polished Copper, Polished Gold). The three polished metal finishes are available in Straight Grain only.

Where can I buy Amtico stripping?

Amtico stripping is sold only through Amtico’s approved retailer network. Grosvenor Flooring is the approved Amtico retailer for Altrincham, Cheshire and South Manchester, with the full stripping sample set on display in our 24/7 Smart Showroom. Contact us for supply-only or supply & fit orders.

Is Amtico stripping the same as an Amtico border?

No. Stripping is a continuous thin inlay between every plank or tile, used to define shapes or create a grout effect. Borders are pre-designed decorative bands (such as the Mondrian, Broad Stripe or Pinstripe patterns) that frame a room or zone within a larger floor. The two can be combined in a single installation if desired.

Can Amtico stripping be cut to length?

Yes. Stripping is supplied at 914mm length and is cut to size by your fitter as the floor is laid. There is no joint visible at the cut once the floor is bonded and finished, provided the work is carried out by an experienced Amtico fitter.

Does Amtico stripping work with underfloor heating?

Yes. Stripping is the same 2mm LVT material as the rest of the floor and carries the same underfloor-heating compatibility as your chosen Amtico plank or tile range — suitable for use up to a surface temperature of 27°C, with a water-piped UFH system embedded in the subfloor.

How much extra does stripping add to a fitted Amtico floor?

Stripping adds both a materials cost (typically a small fraction of the plank/tile cost) and an installation labour element (because stripping takes longer to lay than a plain bonded floor). The total uplift varies with plank or tile size, stripping width and laying pattern. Contact us with your project details for an accurate quote, or see our LVT supply & fit pricing guide for base fitted prices across the Amtico range.

Can Amtico Click Smart be installed with stripping?

No. Stripping has to be bonded into the subfloor adhesive between planks and tiles as the floor is laid, and Click Smart’s rigid-core click mechanism does not allow strips to be inserted between locked planks. If your design needs stripping, choose one of the Amtico glue-down collections instead — Signature, Form, Spacia, First or the commercial Access range.

Do polished metal stripping options work in all Amtico installations?

The three polished metal finishes (Silver, Copper, Gold) are available in Straight Grain only — they cannot be installed in Cross Grain orientation. All other stripping colours are available in both Straight Grain and Cross Grain across all five widths.
