Engineered Wood Herringbone Flooring

Herringbone is the most specified parquet pattern in UK home flooring today and engineered wood is the right way to lay it. The small-format blocks are built on a multi-ply core that holds its shape through the temperature swings of a centrally heated home and topped with a real oak wear layer thick enough to be sanded and re-finished years down the line, so you get the look and feel of an authentic parquet floor without the seasonal movement that solid timber suffers from in modern interiors.

At Grosvenor Flooring we cover the engineered wood herringbone category with two complementary collections. GF Engineered Wood Herringbone is our own-brand European oak parquet library, named after the Cheshire and South Manchester villages we have been fitting floors in for over twenty years: premium spec, sharp pricing, full online checkout, free samples and UK delivery. V4 Deco is the V4 herringbone collection, a designer-led British range covering small-format and XL herringbone in oils, lacquers, brushed and aged finishes, sold on a Request a Price basis.

What Is Engineered Wood Herringbone?

Herringbone is a centuries-old European parquet pattern in which small-format rectangular oak blocks are laid at right angles to one another, forming the distinctive zig-zag that gives the format its name. Engineered wood herringbone takes that traditional look and rebuilds the block on a modern multi-ply core: a stable cross-grain base topped with a real oak wear layer, typically 3mm to 6mm thick. The visible surface is the same as a solid oak parquet block with the same finishes and the same ability to be sanded down years later, but the construction is engineered to handle underfloor heating, central heating and the day-to-day temperature swings that affect any modern home.

Blocks are typically supplied on 14mm to 20mm boards with a 3mm to 6mm oak wear layer, in widths around 90mm to 125mm, so a common spec reads as 15/4 x 90mm (a 15mm board with a 4mm wear layer and a 90mm block). Engineered oak herringbone is the format most associated with designer-led interiors and high-end refurbishments and increasingly with whole-house projects where the floor is treated as an architectural feature rather than a background surface.

The Herringbone Collections We Stock

GF Engineered Wood Herringbone is the largest sub-collection in our own-brand range, a full library of small-format herringbone blocks in European oak finished in the tones our customers actually ask for, from soft natural through smoked, brushed and oiled and grey oak. Designs include Alderley Oak, Farndon Oak, Ridley Oak, Bickerton Oak, Baddiley Oak, Barbridge Oak, Beeston Oak, Burwardsley Oak, Calveley Oak, Chelford Oak, Cuddington Oak, Curzon Oak, Delamere Oak, Dodleston Oak, Dunham Oak, Frodsham Oak, Hale Oak, Handbridge Oak and Tabley Oak. Full online checkout, transparent pricing, free samples and UK delivery.

V4 Deco is V4’s herringbone-led collection. V4 has the broadest format library of any engineered wood brand on the UK market and Deco covers both classic small-format herringbone and XL herringbone in oils, lacquers and brushed surfaces. Sold on a Request a Price basis: get in touch with the design you have shortlisted and we will come back the same working day with a tailored quote.

Herringbone vs Chevron vs Versailles

Three parquet patterns are routinely confused. The table below sets them side by side and all three sit under the broader engineered wood parquet umbrella.

  Herringbone Chevron Versailles
Block shape Rectangular blocks laid at right angles Blocks V-cut at each end so the points meet Large square panels of small woven blocks
Look Classic stepped zig-zag, designer-led Sharper, continuous directional arrow Heritage, decorative statement floor
Best for Kitchens, hallways, open-plan on show Contemporary, directional schemes Period properties, statement rooms
Category Engineered wood herringbone Engineered wood chevron Engineered wood Versailles

Where to Use Engineered Wood Herringbone

Herringbone is most often specified in kitchens, hallways, dining rooms and open-plan ground floors where the floor is on show and increasingly in lounges and bedrooms for a softer, more decorative finish. As with all engineered wood, it should not be installed in bathrooms or wet rooms.

Underfloor Heating

All herringbone ranges we stock are compatible with both wet and electric underfloor heating, subject to a maximum surface temperature of 27C and standard installation guidelines. Acclimatise the boards in the room for at least 48 hours before installation and follow the supplied fitting instructions. The V4 Deco collection birch ply core is particularly well suited to UFH projects where dimensional stability is the priority.

Installation Notes

Herringbone is more demanding to install than a straight plank. The pattern needs to be set out carefully from the centre line of the room, perimeter cuts have to be planned and a mistake mid-floor is harder to recover from than with a plank, so use an experienced fitter for any herringbone project. For customers in the North West we offer supply and fit through a regular team of fitters we know and trust who install herringbone regularly; for nationwide customers we are happy to advise on what to look for when choosing a local installer. See our complete installation guide for engineered wood flooring for more.

Key Takeaways

  • Engineered wood herringbone is a real oak parquet block on a stable multi-ply core, so it delivers the traditional zig-zag pattern without the seasonal movement of solid timber.
  • The oak wear layer, typically 3mm to 6mm, can be sanded and re-finished and every range works over underfloor heating up to 27C.
  • Grosvenor Flooring stocks two herringbone collections: our own-label GF Engineered Wood Herringbone (buy online, free samples) and V4 Deco (Request a Price).
  • Herringbone suits kitchens, hallways, dining rooms and open-plan spaces where the floor is on show, but it is not suitable for bathrooms or wet rooms.
  • Herringbone, chevron and Versailles are the three engineered parquet formats: herringbone steps, chevron points and Versailles is a large heritage panel.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is engineered wood herringbone flooring?

It is a real oak parquet floor in which small rectangular oak blocks are laid at right angles to form the classic zig-zag pattern, built on a stable multi-ply core rather than solid timber. The surface is genuine oak that can be sanded and re-finished, while the engineered core lets the floor cope with underfloor heating and centrally heated homes.

Is engineered herringbone suitable for underfloor heating?

Yes. Every herringbone range we stock works with both wet and electric underfloor heating up to a maximum surface temperature of 27C. Acclimatise the blocks for at least 48 hours before fitting and follow the supplied installation instructions.

What is the difference between herringbone and chevron?

Herringbone uses rectangular blocks laid at right angles, so they step past one another in a zig-zag. Chevron blocks are cut at an angle at each end so the points meet to form a continuous arrow, which reads as sharper and more directional. Both are engineered oak parquet formats.

Is herringbone more expensive than a straight plank?

Usually a little. Herringbone uses smaller blocks, which means more pieces, more milling and more handling than a wide plank and installation takes longer. Our own-label GF Engineered Wood Herringbone keeps the cost down by selling direct without a national brand premium.

Can engineered herringbone be sanded and refinished?

Yes. Because the blocks carry a real oak wear layer, usually 3mm to 6mm thick, the floor can be sanded and re-finished. A thicker wear layer allows more sandings over the life of the floor, which is the main thing to check when comparing ranges.

What size are engineered herringbone blocks?

Blocks are typically supplied on 14mm to 20mm boards with a 3mm to 6mm oak wear layer, in widths around 90mm to 125mm. A common specification reads as 15/4 x 90mm, meaning a 15mm board with a 4mm wear layer and a 90mm block. Exact dimensions vary by range and are shown on each product page.

Which herringbone ranges does Grosvenor Flooring stock?

Two. GF Engineered Wood Herringbone is our own-label European oak range, available to buy online with full pricing and up to five free samples. V4 Deco is V4's designer-led herringbone collection, sold on a Request a Price basis. Both work over underfloor heating and both can be supplied and fitted across the North West.
