GF Engineered Wood Herringbone

The GF Herringbone collection is the largest sub-collection in our GF engineered oak range — a full library of small-format herringbone blocks in European oak, finished in the tones our customers actually ask for. Every floor is named after a village in Cheshire or South Manchester, and every floor is buy-online with full pricing, free samples and UK delivery.

Herringbone is the format most associated with designer-led interiors and high-end refurbishments, and for good reason: laid correctly, it brings a quiet sense of craft to a room without overwhelming the rest of the scheme. The GF Herringbone library is designed to give you that look at a sharper price than the better-known UK premium ranges, with the same European oak, the same multi-ply core construction and the same hand-finishing techniques.

About GF Engineered Wood Herringbone

Herringbone has been laid in European homes for several centuries — it predates the wide-board planking that became standard in the twentieth century, and it has come back into fashion as buyers look for floors that feel made rather than mass-produced. The challenge for most retailers is that authentic herringbone blocks are expensive: small-format means more individual pieces, more milling and more handling, and most premium UK brands price accordingly. The GF Herringbone collection is our answer to that — we work directly with European mills to spec, finish and label our own herringbone library, then sell it without the brand premium that comes with selling through a national distributor network.

Every block is built on a multi-ply core for dimensional stability, with a real European oak top layer thick enough to be sanded and re-finished if needed years down the line. Finishes include natural oils, lacquers, brushed surfaces, smoked tones and hand-distressed effects, so you can match the room rather than the other way round.

Designs in the Collection

Herringbone designs in the GF range are named after Cheshire and South Manchester villages and include — among others — Alderley Oak, Farndon Oak, Ridley Oak, Bickerton Oak, Baddiley Oak, Barbridge Oak, Beeston Oak, Burwardsley Oak, Calveley Oak, Chelford Oak, Cuddington Oak, Curzon Oak, Delamere Oak, Dodleston Oak, Dunham Oak, Frodsham Oak, Hale Oak, Handbridge Oak and Tabley Oak. Why Choose Herringbone Over a Wide Plank?

Herringbone reads as more decorative and more designer-led than a plain wide plank — the pattern itself does a lot of the visual work in a room, which is why it tends to be specified in kitchens, hallways, dining rooms and entry-level open-plan layouts where the floor is on show. A wide plank, by contrast, reads as calmer and more contemporary, and tends to suit larger rooms where you want the floor to recede rather than draw the eye. There is no right answer — it depends on the room and the rest of the scheme. If you are still deciding, the GF Planks collection offers exactly the same oak quality in wide-board format, and you can order samples of both for a side-by-side comparison.

Where to Use GF Herringbone

GF Herringbone is suitable in any dry room of the home — most often specified in kitchens, hallways, dining rooms and lounges, and increasingly in bedrooms for a softer, more decorative finish. As with all engineered wood, it should not be installed in bathrooms or wet rooms.

Underfloor Heating

The GF Herringbone collection is compatible with both wet and electric underfloor heating, subject to a maximum surface temperature of 27°C and standard installation guidelines. Always acclimatise the boards in the room for at least 48 hours before installation and follow the supplied fitting instructions.

Installation Notes

Herringbone is more demanding to install than a straight plank — the pattern needs to be set out carefully from the centre line of the room, the perimeter cuts have to be planned, and a mistake mid-floor is harder to recover from than with a plank. We recommend using an experienced fitter for any herringbone project. For customers in the North West, our own fitting teams handle GF Herringbone installations regularly; for nationwide customers, we are happy to advise on what to look for when choosing a local installer. Our blog complete installation guide for engineered wood flooring covers the basics in more detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can engineered herringbone be used with underfloor heating?

Yes, engineered wood herringbone is specifically designed for underfloor heating. Its multi-layer construction allows it to handle the heat without the warping or gapping that affects solid wood.

How many times can an engineered herringbone floor be sanded?

This depends on the thickness of the real wood wear layer (lamella). Typically, a quality 4mm wear layer can be sanded 2 to 3 times, allowing the floor to last for decades

What is the difference between herringbone and chevron?

In a herringbone pattern, the planks are rectangular and meet at a 90-degree angle. In a chevron pattern, the ends of the planks are cut at an angle to meet in a continuous "V" or point.

Is a herringbone floor more expensive to install?

Yes, herringbone installation usually costs more than standard planks because the layout is more complex, requires more precision, and typically results in a slightly higher waste percentage during cutting.

How do I maintain my herringbone wood floor?

Regular sweeping and vacuuming with a soft floor attachment are essential. Use a well-wrung damp mop with a specialist wood floor cleaner, and avoid harsh chemicals or saturated cloths.
