WHAT IS LVT?
Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) is a high-performance multi-layered flooring designed to replicate the natural beauty of wood and stone. LVT stands for luxury vinyl tile, a term that covers both plank and tile formats. It combines authentic-looking finishes with exceptional durability and comfort underfoot, making it ideal for busy homes.
Modern LVT has moved well beyond the vinyl flooring of previous generations. High-definition print layers and textured surfaces mean today’s LVT can be difficult to distinguish from real wood or stone at first glance, while offering far better water resistance and easier maintenance than the natural materials it replicates. Our own GF LVT range is designed to deliver that performance at the most accessible price in our catalogue.
WHAT IS LVT FLOORING MADE OF?
LVT is built from several bonded layers that each do a job. From the bottom up there is a backing layer for stability, a core (flexible PVC in glue-down LVT or a rigid stone polymer composite in SPC click), a high-definition photographic design layer that creates the wood or stone look, a clear wear layer that protects against scratches and scuffs and a top coat that makes cleaning easy.
The wear layer is the part that determines how hard-wearing the floor is over time. It is measured in millimetres and ranges from 0.3mm for light residential use up to 1.0mm for heavy traffic. You can browse the GF LVT range to see how these layers come together at an accessible price.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LVT AND LVP?
There is no real difference in the material. LVT means luxury vinyl tile and LVP means luxury vinyl plank. Both are the same multi-layered vinyl flooring, the only distinction is the shape: planks are long and narrow to mimic timber boards, while tiles are square or rectangular to mimic stone or ceramic. LVT is the umbrella term used across the industry, so you will see it applied to both plank and tile products.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GLUE-DOWN LVT AND SPC CLICK LVT?
These are the two main types of LVT and the difference matters. Glue-down LVT is a flexible plank or tile, typically 2.0 to 2.5mm thick, that is bonded directly to the subfloor with adhesive. It produces a thin stable floor that follows the contour of the subfloor precisely, which makes it the preferred choice for design detail such as herringbone borders and mixed layouts. Our own GF Glue-Down LVT is the value option here.
SPC stands for stone polymer composite. SPC is still LVT, it just has a rigid waterproof core instead of a flexible one. SPC click LVT is typically 5 to 6.5mm thick, locks together and floats over the subfloor without adhesive. It is completely waterproof, faster to install and more forgiving of minor subfloor imperfections. Our GF SPC range covers this option and the SPC flooring guide and glue-down vs click guide walk through the choice in full.
| Feature | Glue-down LVT | SPC click LVT |
|---|---|---|
| Core | Flexible PVC | Rigid stone polymer composite |
| Thickness | 2.0 to 2.5mm | 5 to 6.5mm |
| Waterproof | Yes | Yes, fully |
| Installation | Bonded to the subfloor with adhesive | Clicks together and floats |
| Subfloor | Needs a smooth level subfloor | More forgiving of minor imperfections |
| Built-in underlay | No | Usually yes |
| Best for | Design detail such as herringbone and borders | Fast fitting and DIY projects |
| GF range | GF Glue-Down LVT | GF SPC |
HOW THICK IS LVT FLOORING?
Glue-down LVT is 2.0 to 2.5mm thick and SPC click LVT is 5 to 6.5mm thick. Glue-down is thin because it relies on the subfloor beneath it for support, while SPC is thicker because it carries a rigid core and often a built-in underlay. Neither is better than the other, the thickness simply reflects how the floor is built and installed.
You can shop by thickness directly: 2mm, 2.5mm, 5mm and 6.5mm. What matters more for durability is the wear layer on top rather than the overall thickness.
WHAT IS THE SIZE OF THE PLANKS OR TILES?
LVT comes in different plank and tile sizes to imitate natural materials, which makes it very different from vinyl sheet or lino that comes in one piece. Each glue-down plank or tile is typically 2.0 to 2.5mm thick depending on the range, while SPC click products are thicker at 5 to 6.5mm because of the rigid core.
Format also influences the look. Larger wood-effect planks create a more open feel and suit modern open-plan spaces, while herringbone and parquet blocks add design detail that works well in hallways and traditional interiors.
WHAT IS A WEAR LAYER OR SURFACE GUARD?
The wear layer is the clear protective top layer of an LVT floor, sometimes described as a surface guard. Many products add a factory-applied surface treatment on top for extra resistance to scratches, scuffs and stains while making cleaning easier. Wear layers range from 0.3mm to 1.0mm depending on the range.
The wear layer is one of the most important parts of the floor because it determines how well the product performs over time. A 0.3mm wear layer suits light residential use such as bedrooms. A 0.5mm wear layer handles kitchens hallways and living areas comfortably. A 0.7mm or 1.0mm wear layer is designed for heavy residential use and lasts significantly longer under high traffic.
IS LVT SCRATCH RESISTANT?
LVT is scratch resistant but not scratch proof. It significantly reduces the risk of scratching compared with natural materials such as wood and stone.
Using felt pads under furniture, keeping grit off the floor and following the correct cleaning routine will maintain the surface and reduce visible wear over time. The wear layer also plays a role: products with a 0.5mm wear layer or above offer noticeably better scratch resistance than entry-level options. Our LVT maintenance guide covers day-to-day care.
DOES LVT RESIST DENTS AND INDENTATIONS?
LVT is designed to resist indentations and pressure marks thanks to its durable construction and protective wear layers.
As with any flooring, very heavy furniture or concentrated weight can still leave marks, so use floor protectors where needed. SPC click LVT tends to resist indentation slightly better than flexible glue-down LVT because of its rigid stone polymer core. The GF SPC range is a good example.
IS LVT WATERPROOF?
Yes, LVT is fully waterproof, which makes it an excellent choice for moisture-prone areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms and entrances. Its waterproof construction prevents warping swelling or lifting when exposed to spills or damp. For bathrooms and wet areas a textured or stone-effect finish gives extra grip underfoot.
This is one of the main reasons LVT is so popular in modern homes. Unlike engineered wood, which can be damaged by standing water, LVT handles wet environments without risk. Our waterproof flooring guide explains where it works best.
IS LVT SUITABLE FOR UNDERFLOOR HEATING?
Yes. LVT is one of the best flooring choices for underfloor heating. Its thin profile and stable construction mean it conducts heat efficiently and responds quickly to temperature changes. Most LVT products are rated for underfloor heating up to a surface temperature of 27C.
Glue-down LVT performs particularly well over underfloor heating because the adhesive bond gives direct contact with the heated subfloor, maximising heat transfer. SPC click products also work well, though the floating method means heat transfer can be slightly less efficient. Our best flooring for underfloor heating guide compares the options.
DOES LVT NEED UNDERLAY?
Glue-down LVT does not use underlay. It is bonded directly to a prepared subfloor and adding underlay beneath it would stop the adhesive working and make the floor unstable.
Most SPC click LVT already has a thin acoustic underlay bonded to the base, so you do not need to buy separate underlay. Our GF SPC range comes with this built-in layer for warmth and sound reduction.
CAN I LAY LVT OVER EXISTING TILES OR FLOORBOARDS?
In many cases yes, provided the existing surface is sound, clean and level. Timber floorboards usually need overboarding with plywood first to create a smooth flat base and the grout lines on ceramic tiles often need filling with a smoothing compound so they do not telegraph through the new floor.
Good subfloor preparation is the single biggest factor in a long-lasting LVT floor. Our LVT installation guide explains how to assess and prepare different subfloors before you start.
HOW DO I PREPARE FOR AND FINISH AN LVT INSTALLATION?
Three steps matter beyond the subfloor itself. Acclimatisation means leaving the flooring flat in the room for around 24 to 48 hours before fitting so it adjusts to the temperature, which prevents movement later. Expansion gaps are small gaps left around the perimeter of a click floor so it can expand and contract with temperature, these are hidden under the skirting or beading.
Beading, also called scotia, is a slim trim that covers the expansion gap where the floor meets the skirting for a neat finish. Glue-down floors do not need an expansion gap, so beading is optional. The LVT installation guide covers each step in order.
WHAT IS LOOSE LAY LVT?
Loose lay LVT is a heavier flexible vinyl that stays in place through friction and its own weight rather than adhesive or a click system. It has a high-grip backing that grips the subfloor, so most of the floor can simply be laid down with only perimeter or spot tackifier used in larger rooms.
It is quick to install and easy to lift and replace, which makes it popular for rooms where access under the floor may be needed. Browse the options in the loose lay LVT category.
IS LVT EASY TO CLEAN AND MAINTAIN?
Yes. LVT needs minimal maintenance. The best way to clean LVT flooring is regular sweeping or vacuuming and occasional mopping with a pH-neutral cleaner. Steam cleaning is not recommended because the heat and moisture can damage the adhesive bond in glue-down installations and affect the surface finish over time.
For detailed aftercare, our ultimate guide to LVT flooring maintenance covers the right cleaners and routines.
IS LVT HYGIENIC AND SAFE FOR CHILDREN?
LVT has a non-porous surface that helps prevent the build-up of bacteria mould and allergens, which makes it a hygienic choice for homes with children or allergy sufferers. Its smooth easy-to-clean surface is practical for busy family spaces and unlike carpet it will not trap dust or pet hair deep in the fibres.
Many modern LVT products are also made with phthalate-free components and low-VOC materials, so they are a sound choice for children’s rooms and family areas. Environmental and safety standards vary by range, so it is always worth checking the specification of the product you are considering.
IS LVT SUITABLE FOR HOMES WITH PETS AND CHILDREN?
Absolutely. LVT is built for busy homes. It resists scratches, is easy to clean after accidents or spills and is comfortable underfoot for children and pets alike.
For homes with dogs, a wear layer of 0.5mm or above is recommended to handle claws and general wear. It performs especially well in high-traffic spaces such as kitchens and hallways.
IS LVT QUIET TO WALK ON?
LVT offers excellent acoustic performance. It reduces footfall noise compared with many other hard floors, which suits multi-level homes and apartments and it feels less harsh underfoot than tile or stone.
SPC click products with a built-in acoustic backing offer even better sound dampening, which makes a noticeable difference in upstairs rooms and flats.
WHAT ROOMS IS LVT BEST SUITED TO?
LVT works well in every room. It is especially popular in kitchens, hallways and bathrooms for its waterproof and scratch-resistant qualities. It also performs well in living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms, conservatories, home offices and utility rooms.
Many homeowners now run LVT through the whole ground floor for a seamless look, pairing herringbone in the hallway and kitchen with straight planks in the living spaces.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HERRINGBONE, CHEVRON AND PARQUET LVT?
All three are decorative laying patterns. Herringbone uses rectangular planks laid at 90 degrees to form a broken zig-zag, where the end of one plank meets the side of the next. Chevron uses planks cut at an angle so the ends meet in a continuous V that forms straight unbroken lines.
Parquet is the broader term for geometric block patterns, of which herringbone is the most common. Browse parquet LVT for the full choice and the herringbone flooring guide explains how to choose between them.
IS LVT ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY?
Many LVT products are made with low-VOC materials and phthalate-free components and some are recyclable or made using more sustainable processes. If this matters to you, it is worth checking the environmental credentials of the specific range.
Standards vary by brand and collection, so compare specifications if sustainability is a key factor in your decision.
DOES LVT COME WITH A GUARANTEE?
Most quality LVT floors are backed by warranties ranging from 10 years to a lifetime depending on the product.
Warranty length varies between brands and collections, so check the details of the range you are considering. The warranty typically covers manufacturing defects and structural integrity rather than surface wear from normal use.
GLUE DOWN OR CLICK, WHICH INSTALLATION METHOD IS RIGHT FOR ME?
Glue-down LVT is usually preferred for design flexibility and a secure long-term finish and it is the method to choose if you want borders or intricate patterns. It needs proper subfloor preparation: a timber subfloor is usually ply-boarded over then smoothed and a concrete subfloor usually needs a smoothing compound.
Click SPC is quicker and more forgiving, which suits straightforward projects and some DIY situations. If you are unsure, discuss your subfloor and layout with a flooring specialist first, or read the glue-down vs click guide.
CAN I INSTALL LVT MYSELF?
Some formats such as click-lock SPC are suitable for competent DIY installation. Glue-down LVT is more demanding and usually needs a professional installer to achieve a smooth lasting result, particularly for patterns such as herringbone.
If you are in the Altrincham, South Manchester or Cheshire area, Grosvenor Flooring offers a full supply and fit service using a regular team of fitters we know and trust, covering measurement, subfloor preparation and installation. See the LVT floor fitter page for detail, or the installation guide if you plan to fit it yourself.
CAN LVT FADE IN SUNLIGHT?
LVT has UV-resistant properties built into the wear layer, but some fading can occur over time with prolonged direct sunlight. Blinds, curtains or UV window film help minimise this.
In most homes this is not a major issue, but it is worth considering in rooms with large south-facing windows. Moving rugs and furniture periodically helps the floor age evenly.
IS LVT THE SAME AS VINYL OR LINO?
Not quite. LVT is a premium multi-layered vinyl supplied as individual planks or tiles, whereas sheet vinyl and lino come as a single roll laid in one piece. LVT gives a far more realistic wood or stone look, better durability and the option of design patterns such as herringbone.
Lino is also a distinct material historically made from natural linoleum, though the word is often used loosely for sheet vinyl. If you want the tile-and-plank format and premium finish, LVT is the product to look at. For value options see our vinyl flooring sale.
IS LVT BETTER THAN LAMINATE?
They suit different priorities. LVT is fully waterproof and quieter and warmer underfoot, which makes it the stronger choice for kitchens bathrooms and whole-home use. Laminate can be cheaper and offers a very realistic wood look, but it is less water-resistant.
Our full LVT vs laminate flooring guide compares the two side by side so you can decide which fits your project.
