Why Ciro’s Unizip System Matters for Herringbone

Traditional herringbone flooring — whether engineered wood or click LVT — is supplied in two distinct plank profiles, usually labelled A-plank and B-plank. The two profiles click together at 90° angles to form the herringbone pattern, but they are not interchangeable: if you run out of A-planks before B-planks (or vice versa) halfway through a job, the installation stops until you re-order. Cut-offs are also more difficult to redeploy because the plank’s orientation matters.

Ciro uses Quick-Step’s Unizip system, which is a single-plank herringbone format. Every plank in the box is identical — both sides of the plank carry the click profile needed to form the herringbone pattern. This removes the A/B ordering problem, makes cut-offs freely reusable, and meaningfully reduces installation time. For professional fitters, Ciro saves labour. The Ciro range covers six wood-effect colourways, all oak-grain inspired. Where Alpha Ciro Works Best

Herringbone is most commonly specified in kitchens, dining rooms, entrance halls, open-plan ground floors and period-property refits where the pattern adds architectural interest. Because Ciro is rigid core SPC rather than engineered wood, it is also suitable in places where traditional wood herringbone would be inappropriate — family bathrooms, utility rooms, boot rooms and other moisture-prone zones. The 100% waterproof construction and sealed Hydroseal click joints mean occasional spills and splashes are not a concern.

In larger open-plan spaces, the herringbone pattern creates a subtle visual break between functional zones without the need for different flooring materials or a transition strip. In smaller spaces — a hallway, a downstairs WC — herringbone can actually make the room feel larger because the diagonal pattern draws the eye the length of the space rather than across it.

Alpha Ciro Compared to Other Herringbone LVT

The most direct cross-shops for Alpha Ciro are Karndean Van Gogh herringbone, Amtico Signature herringbone (glue-down) and the herringbone designs in the Alva LVT range. Each of these has its own merits, and the right choice depends on what you are prioritising:

• vs Karndean Van Gogh herringbone: Van Gogh is Karndean’s flagship glue-down herringbone range and uses a 0.3mm wear layer with a traditional A/B plank format. Ciro Installation Notes

Herringbone installation — even with the Unizip single-plank system — is more time-consuming than straight-lay plank installation. Allow approximately 40% more labour time on a herringbone project compared to a straight-lay install of equivalent square metreage, and budget for approximately 10–15% wastage on offcuts (higher than the 5–8% typical for straight-lay plank flooring). A clean, flat subfloor with moisture readings in range is non-negotiable for any rigid core herringbone install to finish correctly.

Ciro is compatible with underfloor heating systems — both water-based and electric — subject to Quick-Step’s 27°C maximum surface temperature and gradual ramp-up protocols. Ramp-up should happen over several days after installation rather than on day one, to allow the rigid core to acclimatise across the herringbone seams.
