Amtico Herringbone Laying Patterns Guide

Amtico Herringbone Laying Patterns Guide

Amtico Herringbone and Laying Patterns: A Complete Guide

One of the reasons Amtico sits at the top of the UK LVT market is its laying pattern flexibility. Where most LVT brands offer standard plank or tile layouts, Amtico — particularly Amtico Signature — opens up a range of bespoke design options that can genuinely transform a room: herringbone, parquet, chevron, basket weave, borders and custom combinations that make the floor a design feature in its own right.

This guide covers the main Amtico laying patterns, which ranges support them, and what to consider when planning a patterned Amtico floor. If you are weighing up layout options for your project, this should help you narrow the choices before requesting a quote.

Herringbone

Herringbone is the most popular Amtico laying pattern and one of the most searched-for LVT layouts in the UK. The pattern arranges rectangular planks at 90-degree angles to create a distinctive zigzag effect that adds movement, depth and a sense of craftsmanship to any room.

Herringbone works particularly well in hallways and entrance areas (where the directional pattern draws the eye through the space), kitchens, living rooms and open-plan areas. It suits both contemporary and traditional interiors depending on the colour and tone of the plank chosen.

Which Amtico ranges offer herringbone? Amtico Signature provides the fullest herringbone capability, with dedicated herringbone plank sizes and the ability to combine patterns with borders, feature strips and other bespoke elements. Amtico Spacia and Amtico Form can also be laid in herringbone using their standard plank formats — the result is clean and effective, though with fewer bespoke options than Signature. Amtico First planks can technically be laid in herringbone, though the narrower design range means fewer suitable options.

Parquet

Parquet layouts use smaller blocks or planks arranged in geometric patterns — typically basket weave, brick bond or traditional parquet squares. The effect is more intricate and decorative than herringbone, often chosen for feature rooms, dining rooms or spaces where the floor is intended to be a focal point.

Amtico Signature is the standout range for parquet, offering dedicated smaller-format tiles and planks designed specifically for geometric layouts. The bespoke design service allows you to combine multiple plank sizes, add borders and create fully custom parquet patterns — something very few LVT brands can offer. Spacia and Form planks can be arranged in simple parquet patterns (brick bond, for example), but the more complex geometric layouts are where Signature’s dedicated formats really justify the investment.

Chevron

Chevron is closely related to herringbone but produces a different visual effect. Where herringbone planks are rectangular and placed at 90-degree angles, chevron planks are cut at an angle at both ends so they meet in a continuous V-shape or point. The result is a cleaner, more directional pattern that suits modern, design-forward interiors.

Chevron is a more specialist layout that requires angled plank cuts — this increases both material and installation cost compared to herringbone. Amtico Signature supports chevron layouts through its bespoke design options. For a dedicated chevron product across other brands, browse our wood-effect chevron LVT category.

Borders, Feature Strips and Bespoke Layouts

This is where Amtico — specifically Signature — genuinely differentiates itself from almost every other LVT brand on the market.

Amtico Signature gives access to a bespoke design service that allows you to combine different plank and tile sizes with decorative borders, feature strips, inlays and contrasting materials. Common applications include bordered hallway designs (a feature strip framing the perimeter of the room), inlaid motifs in commercial or reception areas, and contrasting plank patterns that zone different areas of an open-plan space.

The level of customisation is comparable to what you would expect from a bespoke wood floor — but with the practical advantages of LVT: full water resistance, underfloor heating compatibility, easier maintenance and no need for sanding or refinishing.

Bespoke Signature layouts do require professional design planning. At Grosvenor Flooring we can discuss layout options with you, advise on what works visually and practically for your space, and coordinate with Amtico’s design team on more complex projects.

Standard Plank and Tile Layouts

Not every Amtico floor needs a patterned layout. Standard plank and tile configurations are the most popular choices across the range and work well in every room:

  • Straight plank (running bond): The most common layout — planks laid in parallel rows with staggered joints. Clean, contemporary and universally suitable. Works with every Amtico range.
  • Brick bond: Planks offset by exactly half their length, creating a brickwork-like pattern. Slightly more visual interest than running bond without the complexity of herringbone. Works with all ranges.
  • Large-format tile: Square or near-square tiles laid in a grid or offset pattern — most common with stone-effect designs. Available across Spacia, Form and Signature.

The pattern: if you want anything beyond a standard plank or brick bond layout, Amtico Signature is the range that unlocks the full design palette. Spacia and Form handle herringbone and basic parquet well, but the bespoke and complex pattern territory belongs to Signature.

Installation Considerations for Patterned Amtico

Patterned Amtico layouts are professional installations — they are not DIY-friendly. The precision required for herringbone and parquet (accurate starting points, consistent spacing, clean cuts at perimeters) means an experienced, approved fitter is essential. Poor installation of a patterned floor is immediately visible in a way that a misaligned standard plank layout might not be.

If you are considering Amtico Click Smart, note that it is designed for standard plank layouts only — herringbone and parquet are not available in click format. Patterned Amtico is a glue-down product, which requires proper subfloor preparation and professional adhesive application.

All patterned Amtico installations are covered by the full manufacturer warranty when carried out by an approved retailer. At Grosvenor Flooring, our fitting teams are experienced with herringbone, parquet and bespoke Signature layouts across all Amtico collections.
