Amtico First Guide

Amtico First Guide – Grosvenor Flooring

Amtico First: The Complete UK Buyer’s Guide

First is the entry point to the Amtico range – the most affordable way to put a genuine Amtico floor down. It is the range to look at when you want the Amtico name, the Amtico look and the Amtico manufacturing quality, but the rooms you are flooring do not demand the heavier wear layers of Spacia, Form or Signature. This guide explains what First is, where it genuinely performs well, where you should step up the range instead, and how it fits against the rest of the Amtico family.

Grosvenor Flooring is an Amtico Approved Retail Partner. We supply and fit First as well as the rest of the Amtico range, so this guide is written from a retailer’s perspective – what First is genuinely good for, and the honest answer on when it is the right call and when it is not.

What Is Amtico First?

First is a glue-down (dryback) luxury vinyl tile range, bonded directly to a prepared subfloor with Amtico’s specialist adhesive. It is designed and manufactured at Amtico’s factory in Coventry – the same UK site that produces Spacia, Form and Signature.

First has a 0.3mm wear layer protected by Quantum Guard, Amtico’s polyurethane reinforced (PUR) surface coating. That wear layer is the defining characteristic of the range: 0.3mm is a standard residential rating, well suited to bedrooms, living rooms and lower-traffic spaces, but lighter than the 0.55mm on Spacia. First carries a 15-year residential warranty when professionally installed.

What First is not is a stripped-back, lower-quality product. It is manufactured to the same standards at the same factory as the rest of the range, with the same Quantum Guard coating principle. The difference from Spacia and above is the thickness of the wear layer and the length of the warranty, not the build quality.

The Amtico First Design Range

First covers the core wood and stone aesthetics, with oak the dominant theme – First’s wood library is built around oak designs in a spread of tones, which is why so many searches for the range pair it with an oak design name. The looks run from pale and limed oaks through warm mid-brown timbers, alongside a selection of stone and tile effects for kitchens and utility areas.

The design library is more focused than the larger ranges – Signature in particular has a far deeper catalogue – but First covers the mainstream looks most projects need. Surface embossing gives the designs texture, though the deepest, most tactile finishes belong to Form. Our Amtico designs, colours and patterns guide gives the wider view across the brand.

Amtico First Specification

First’s headline specification is a 0.3mm wear layer with Quantum Guard PUR coating, and a 15-year residential warranty. The wear layer determines how the floor copes with daily traffic, grit and furniture movement – 0.3mm is a sound residential rating for rooms that are not subject to the heaviest wear.

First is a glue-down tile and is the thinnest-gauge range in the Amtico residential line-up, which makes it well suited to situations where floor height at thresholds and existing joinery matters. It is compatible with underfloor heating subject to Amtico’s temperature limits.

Where First Fits in the Amtico Range

Amtico’s four glue-down residential ranges step up by wear layer: First is 0.3mm with a 15-year warranty, Spacia is 0.55mm with 20 years, Form is 0.7mm with 30 years, and Signature is 1.0mm with a lifetime warranty.

First’s most important comparison is with Spacia directly above it. Spacia has a thicker wear layer, a longer warranty, the upgraded Quantum Guard Elite coating and a wider design library. For a whole-home project, or for any floor going into a kitchen, hallway or other high-traffic room, Spacia is usually the better long-term choice – and the price gap between the two is often smaller than buyers expect. First makes the most sense when the rooms genuinely are low-traffic, or when budget is the firm constraint and the alternative would be a non-Amtico product.

There is also Amtico Click Smart, the rigid core click range, for renovation and floating-floor projects.

Where Amtico First Works Well

First is genuinely well suited to bedrooms, studies, lower-traffic living rooms and other spaces where the floor will not take the constant punishment a kitchen or hallway does. In these rooms the 0.3mm wear layer is entirely adequate, and First delivers the authentic Amtico look and feel at the most accessible price in the range.

It is also a sensible choice when you want Amtico in a specific room rather than a whole house – a bedroom refresh, for example – and stepping up to Spacia would not change the outcome because the room simply is not demanding. And it is the right call when the realistic alternative is a non-Amtico budget product: First brings genuine Amtico manufacturing quality into reach.

Where First is the wrong choice is high-traffic rooms. Kitchens, hallways, open-plan living spaces and homes with pets and young children put more wear through the floor than a 0.3mm layer is designed for over the long term – in those rooms, stepping up to Spacia is money well spent.

Installation: What to Know Before You Buy

First is a glue-down LVT and needs a flat, dry, well-prepared subfloor. Because it is the thinnest range in the Amtico line-up, any unevenness in the subfloor will show through over time, so proper preparation – and self-levelling compound where the surface is not perfect – matters as much for First as for any Amtico range.

First must be installed with Amtico’s approved adhesive system. Amtico’s warranties are conditional on professional installation by an Amtico Approved Retail Partner, so buying through an approved retailer is the mechanism that validates your warranty rather than just a commercial preference.

Amtico First and Underfloor Heating

First is compatible with both wet and electric underfloor heating systems, subject to Amtico’s maximum surface temperature of 27°C. As the thinnest Amtico tile it transfers heat very efficiently. Use a floor sensor rather than a room thermostat, and follow Amtico’s commissioning procedure – a gradual ramp-up and proper cool-down before installation. Our guide to Amtico flooring and underfloor heating covers the detail.

Warranty

Amtico provides a 15-year residential warranty on First when the floor is correctly installed and maintained. It is the shortest warranty in the Amtico residential range, reflecting the 0.3mm wear layer. The warranty can be invalidated by incorrect adhesive, exceeding the 27°C underfloor heating limit, water ingress from poor detailing, or installation over an unsuitable subfloor. Register the installation with Amtico through your approved retailer at the point of fitting.

Is Amtico First Right for Your Project?

First is the right choice if the rooms you are flooring are genuinely low-traffic – bedrooms, studies, quieter living rooms – if you want the authentic Amtico look at the most accessible price, or if the realistic alternative is a non-Amtico budget product and you would rather have genuine Amtico quality. For these projects First does exactly what it needs to.

It is the wrong choice for kitchens, hallways, open-plan living and busy family homes – those rooms need the heavier wear layer of Spacia or Form. Our honest advice to most whole-home buyers is to look closely at Spacia first: the price gap is often smaller than expected and the extra wear layer pays for itself over the life of the floor. If you need a floating click floor rather than glue-down, look at Click Smart.

Amtico First Care and Maintenance

First is a low-maintenance floor once correctly installed. Sweep or vacuum without a beater bar to lift loose grit, and damp-mop with a pH-neutral floor cleaner weekly or as needed. Avoid steam mops at high temperature, abrasive scouring pads, wax polishes and any cleaner not rated for LVT – these are the most common causes of premature wear-layer damage.

Because First has the lightest wear layer in the range, grit protection matters: use doormats at entrances, fit felt pads under all furniture and use sliders for heavy items. Our guide to cleaning Amtico flooring covers the full routine and stain treatments.

Amtico First in Real Projects

Three customer scenarios account for most of the First we supply and fit:

Bedroom refresh: the most common First project is a bedroom or group of bedrooms – low-traffic rooms where the 0.3mm wear layer is entirely adequate and the customer wants a genuine Amtico floor without paying for a heavier specification the room will never use. First delivers the authentic Amtico look and feel where it makes sense to spend less.

Whole-home project on a firm budget: customers who want Amtico throughout but have a fixed budget that Spacia would stretch. In these projects we often recommend a mixed specification – First in the bedrooms and quieter rooms, with Spacia stepped up in the kitchen and hallway – so the budget goes where the wear actually happens. First makes that kind of room-by-room specification affordable.

Single-room study or guest room: a focused project where the customer wants Amtico quality in one specific room rather than a whole house. For a study, guest room or other lower-use space, First is the sensible call – stepping up to Spacia would not change the outcome because the room simply is not demanding enough to use the extra wear layer.

Amtico First Frequently Asked Questions

What wear layer does Amtico First have?

First has a 0.3mm wear layer protected by Quantum Guard PUR coating. It is the lightest wear layer in the Amtico residential range – a sound residential rating for bedrooms and lower-traffic rooms, but lighter than the 0.55mm on Spacia.

What is the difference between Amtico First and Spacia?

Spacia steps up from First with a thicker wear layer (0.55mm versus 0.3mm), a longer warranty (20 years versus 15), the upgraded Quantum Guard Elite coating and a wider design library. First suits low-traffic rooms and tighter budgets; Spacia suits whole-home projects and any high-traffic room. For most whole-home buyers, Spacia is the better long-term choice.

Is Amtico First good quality?

Yes – First is manufactured to the same standards at the same Coventry factory as the rest of the Amtico range, with the same Quantum Guard coating principle. It is a genuine Amtico product. The difference from the higher ranges is the thickness of the wear layer and the length of the warranty, not the build quality.

Can Amtico First be used in a kitchen?

First can be used in a kitchen, but it is not our first recommendation. Kitchens are high-traffic rooms, and the 0.3mm wear layer is designed for lighter-use spaces. For a kitchen, stepping up to Spacia and its 0.55mm wear layer is money well spent over the life of the floor.

How long does Amtico First last?

First carries a 15-year residential warranty. In low-traffic rooms, used as intended, a correctly installed and maintained First floor comfortably reaches that. In high-traffic rooms it will wear faster than a heavier range, which is why room choice matters with First.

Can Amtico First go over underfloor heating?

Yes – First works with wet and electric underfloor heating subject to Amtico’s 27°C maximum surface temperature. As the thinnest Amtico tile it transfers heat very efficiently. Use a floor sensor and follow Amtico’s commissioning procedure.
