Amtico and Underfloor Heating: Everything You Need to Know

The short answer is yes — every Amtico range is compatible with underfloor heating. First, Spacia, Form, Signature, Click Smart and Access all work with both wet (piped) and electric underfloor heating systems. But there are important rules around temperature limits, installation timing and practical considerations that you need to get right — otherwise you risk damaging the floor or voiding the warranty. For a wider overview of how each Amtico range is specced — wear layer, warranty, price and installation formats — our full Amtico flooring review is the companion piece to this guide.

The 27°C Rule

This is the single most important thing to know: the surface temperature of the subfloor must not exceed 27°C. This is Amtico’s stated maximum across all ranges and all underfloor heating system types. Exceeding it risks softening the vinyl, causing tiles to expand, lift, or discolour — and will void your warranty.

27°C as a floor surface temperature is more than adequate for comfortable heating. Most people set their underfloor heating to produce a surface temperature of 22–25°C, which feels warm underfoot without being hot. The 27°C limit is a safety ceiling, not a target.

To stay within this limit reliably, your underfloor heating system needs a thermostat with a floor sensor (not just a room air sensor). A room thermostat alone can allow the floor surface to overshoot because it responds to air temperature, which lags behind the floor. A floor probe gives you direct control over the surface temperature.

Wet Systems vs Electric Systems

Wet (piped) underfloor heating is the most common type in new builds and ground-floor extensions. Warm water circulates through pipes embedded in the screed or subfloor. These systems are straightforward with Amtico — the heat distribution is gentle and even, making it easy to stay within the 27°C limit. All Amtico ranges, including Click Smart, are compatible with wet underfloor heating.

Electric underfloor heating uses heating mats or cables beneath the floor surface. These systems heat up faster and can create more concentrated heat than wet systems, so accurate temperature control matters more. Amtico require that electric heating elements are fully embedded in a well-bonded levelling compound — the mat or cable cannot sit directly beneath the LVT tiles. The levelling compound provides an even heat spread and prevents hot spots from forming directly under the flooring.

Both system types work. The practical difference is that electric systems need more careful installation to meet Amtico’s requirements, and the running costs are higher for larger areas. For whole-house heating, wet systems are more efficient. For single-room retrofits — a bathroom or kitchen — electric mats are often the more practical choice.

Installation Rules: The 48-Hour Window

Amtico’s installation guidelines are specific about timing when underfloor heating is involved:

Before installation: The underfloor heating system must be fully installed, commissioned and operational with no leaks before the Amtico flooring goes down. If it’s a wet system, it needs to have been run through at least one full heating cycle to confirm the screed is properly cured and there are no issues.

48 hours before fitting: Switch the underfloor heating off at least 48 hours before the Amtico is installed. The subfloor needs to cool to ambient room temperature so the adhesive cures correctly (for glue-down ranges) or the click joints engage properly (for Click Smart).

48 hours after fitting: Leave the heating off for a further 48 hours after installation. This gives the adhesive time to fully cure without thermal stress. For Click Smart, it allows the planks to settle into their final position.

Gradual warm-up: After the 48-hour post-installation period, bring the heating back up gradually — increase the temperature by no more than 5°C per day until you reach your desired operating temperature. Don’t jump straight to 27°C.

These rules aren’t optional. Skipping the cool-down period or rushing the warm-up can cause adhesive failure, tile movement, or expansion gaps. Your installer should be aware of these requirements, but it’s worth confirming before work begins.

Glue-Down vs Click Smart: Which Is Better Over Underfloor Heating?

Both formats work, but glue-down has the edge for underfloor heating applications. Here’s why.

Glue-down LVT (First, Spacia, Form, Signature) is bonded directly to the subfloor with adhesive. This means there’s no air gap between the floor surface and the heat source — the heat transfers directly and efficiently through the tiles. It also means the tiles can’t move as they expand and contract with temperature changes, because they’re held in place by the adhesive.

Click Smart is a floating floor — the planks sit on top of the subfloor and aren’t bonded to it. The rigid core and built-in underlay create a very slight insulating layer between the heat source and the floor surface. This doesn’t prevent the heat from reaching the room, but it does slow the transfer slightly compared to glue-down. The planks also need expansion gaps around the perimeter to accommodate thermal movement.

For most residential installations, the difference is marginal — both deliver a warm, comfortable floor. But if maximising heat transfer efficiency is a priority (for example, in a passively heated home where underfloor heating is the sole heat source), glue-down is the technically superior option.

Avoiding Hot Spots and Discolouration

One common issue with underfloor heating and LVT that catches people out: placing large insulating objects on the floor can create localised hot spots. Thick rugs, beanbags, pet beds and heavy towels (in bathrooms) trap heat beneath them, causing the temperature under the object to exceed 27°C even when the rest of the floor is within range. Over time, this can lead to discolouration or softening of the tiles beneath.

The fix is simple — avoid leaving large insulating items in the same position permanently, or use thin, non-insulating rugs and mats. If you do use rugs on an Amtico floor with underfloor heating, choose ones with a fabric backing (not rubber, which can also stain LVT — see our Amtico cleaning and care guide for more on this).

Which Amtico Range Is Best for Underfloor Heating?

All ranges are compatible, so the decision comes down to your room, your budget and the level of design you want — not the heating system. That said, some practical considerations:

Amtico Spacia is the most popular choice across all installation types, including over underfloor heating. The 0.55mm wear layer handles high-traffic rooms comfortably, the design range is the widest in the Amtico lineup, and the price point hits the sweet spot for most residential projects.

Amtico Signature is the premium option if you’re investing in underfloor heating as part of a high-end build or renovation. The 1.0mm wear layer means the floor will outlast the heating system, and the bespoke design options — borders, motifs, Designers’ Choice patterns — let you create a floor that matches the investment in the rest of the project. For the full design library, see our Amtico designs, colours and patterns guide.

Amtico Click Smart is worth considering if you’re retrofitting underfloor heating into an existing room and want to avoid the mess of a glue-down installation. The trade-off is slightly slower heat transfer and a smaller design library.
