Engineered Wood Chevron Flooring
Chevron is the sharper, more directional cousin of herringbone: the same parquet idea, but with each block angle-cut at the end so that the points meet in a continuous arrow running the length of the room. The result is a floor that reads as more architectural and more contemporary than a classic herringbone and one that is becoming the format of choice in design-led kitchens, hallways and open-plan ground floors.
At Grosvenor Flooring we cover the engineered wood chevron category with V4 Wood Flooring and our own-brand GF range. V4 Deco includes a chevron sub-range in multiple oak tones and finishes, sold on a Request a Price basis. The GF Engineered Wood own-brand range covers chevron projects on a made-to-order basis where the spec calls for it. Speak to our team for current availability.

What Is Engineered Wood Chevron?
A chevron block is a small-format oak board with both ends cut on a 45 or 60 degree angle, so that when two rows are laid against each other the angled ends meet to form a continuous V running down the centre line of the room. Compared to a herringbone, where rectangular blocks step past one another, chevron reads as more linear and more directional and the unbroken centre line tends to draw the eye through a space rather than across it.
The construction is identical to any other engineered wood floor: a multi-ply core for stability, topped with a real European oak wear layer, typically 3mm to 6mm thick and thick enough to be sanded and re-finished years down the line. So chevron gives you an authentic oak parquet surface with the stability to cope with underfloor heating and the temperature swings of a modern home. Chevron oak is available across a range of tones, from soft natural through smoked and brushed finishes to grey oak.
Chevron vs Herringbone: How to Choose
Both formats are parquet, both are made from the same European oak and both look stunning installed correctly. The difference is the line, as the table below shows.
| Chevron | Herringbone | |
|---|---|---|
| Block cut | Angled ends (45 or 60 degrees) that meet in a point | Rectangular blocks laid at right angles |
| Line | Continuous arrow down the centre line | Stepped, woven zig-zag |
| Feel | Sharper, directional, contemporary | Classic, decorative, versatile |
| Best for | Modern kitchens, long hallways, statement spaces | Almost any room where the floor is on show |
| Category | Engineered wood chevron | Engineered wood herringbone |
If you are still deciding, order samples of both from the GF and V4 ranges and lay them out in the room before committing.
The Chevron Collections We Stock
V4 Deco is the most established chevron range we sell. V4 has the broadest format library of any engineered wood brand on the UK market and the Deco collection covers both small-format and XL chevron in oils, lacquers, brushed and aged finishes. Sold on a Request a Price basis.
GF by Grosvenor Flooring is our own-brand European oak collection, named after Cheshire villages. Most of the GF range is herringbone and wide-board plank, but chevron projects are available made-to-order. Speak to our team if you want a sharper price on a chevron specification.
Where to Use Engineered Wood Chevron
Chevron is most often specified in design-led kitchens, long hallways, dining rooms and lounges. As with all engineered wood, it should not be installed in bathrooms or wet rooms.
Underfloor Heating
All chevron ranges we stock are compatible with both wet and electric underfloor heating, subject to a maximum surface temperature of 27C and standard installation guidelines. Acclimatise the boards in the room for at least 48 hours before installation and follow the supplied fitting instructions.
Installation Notes
Chevron is the most demanding parquet format to install, more so even than herringbone. The angled cuts mean the centre line has to be set out perfectly from the start, because any drift compounds visibly across the room. Always use an experienced fitter for chevron projects. We offer supply and fit across Altrincham, Manchester and Cheshire through a regular team of fitters we know and trust who install chevron regularly; for nationwide customers we are happy to advise on what to look for in a local installer.
Key Takeaways
- Chevron is a parquet format where the oak blocks are angle-cut so the points meet in a continuous arrow down the room, sharper and more directional than herringbone.
- Like all engineered wood it is a real oak wear layer on a stable multi-ply core, so it suits underfloor heating up to 27C and can be sanded and re-finished.
- We cover chevron mainly through V4 Deco (Request a Price) with GF own-brand chevron available made-to-order.
- Chevron suits design-led kitchens, long hallways and statement open-plan spaces, but it is not suitable for bathrooms or wet rooms.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is chevron wood flooring?
Chevron is a parquet floor made from oak blocks that are angle-cut at each end, so the points meet to form a continuous V running down the centre of the room. Engineered wood chevron builds that pattern on a stable multi-ply core topped with a real oak wear layer, giving an authentic parquet surface that copes with underfloor heating.
What is the difference between chevron and herringbone?
Both are oak parquet, but the cut is different. Chevron blocks are angled at the ends so they meet in a point, creating one continuous arrow down the room. Herringbone blocks are rectangular and laid at right angles, so they step past each other in a woven zig-zag. Chevron reads as sharper and more directional; herringbone as more classic and versatile.
Is chevron flooring suitable for underfloor heating?
Yes. Every chevron range we stock works with both wet and electric underfloor heating up to a maximum surface temperature of 27C. The engineered multi-ply core is what keeps the pattern stable over a heated floor. Acclimatise the boards for at least 48 hours before fitting.
Is chevron harder to install than herringbone?
Yes. Chevron is the most demanding parquet format to lay, because the angled cuts mean the centre line has to be set out perfectly and any drift shows across the room. Always use an experienced fitter. We offer supply and fit for chevron across Altrincham, Manchester and Cheshire.
What colours does chevron oak flooring come in?
Chevron oak is available across a range of tones, from soft natural through smoked and brushed finishes to grey oak. The V4 Deco and Tundra collections cover most of the popular chevron looks and you can order samples to compare tones in your own light.
Which chevron ranges does Grosvenor Flooring stock?
Chevron is covered mainly by V4 Deco, sold on a Request a Price basis with our own-brand GF chevron available made-to-order. Speak to our team for current availability and a tailored quote.
Can I get chevron in a waterproof format for a bathroom?
Engineered wood chevron is not suitable for bathrooms or wet rooms. For the same directional look in a fully waterproof floor, see our wood-effect chevron LVT.
