Karndean Herringbone Flooring: A Complete Guide
Herringbone is one of the most popular layout choices for Karndean flooring, and for good reason. The pattern adds movement, depth and a sense of craftsmanship that a standard plank layout cannot match — and Karndean offers herringbone across more of its range than almost any other LVT brand, including both glue-down and rigid core click formats.
This guide covers which Karndean ranges offer herringbone, how the glue-down and rigid core options compare, what to consider when planning a herringbone Karndean floor, and how the options sit alongside herringbone from other brands we stock. If you are weighing up herringbone layouts for your project, this should help you narrow the choices before requesting a quote.
Which Karndean Ranges Offer Herringbone?
Karndean offers dedicated herringbone plank formats across five of its residential collections — spanning every price point from entry-level to premium, in both glue-down and rigid core click formats. This is a broader herringbone offering than almost any other LVT brand.
Karndean Knight Tile — Entry-Level Herringbone
Knight Tile is Karndean’s most accessible collection and the entry point for Karndean herringbone. With a 0.3mm wear layer and 2mm thickness, Knight Tile herringbone delivers the Karndean name and realistic wood-effect finishes at a lower price point than Van Gogh or Art Select. The herringbone planks are purpose-sized for the pattern, so proportions work naturally across different room sizes. For bedrooms, spare rooms and lower-traffic living spaces where you want Karndean herringbone without stretching the budget, Knight Tile is the practical starting point.
Karndean Palio Essenza — Herringbone With Character
Palio Essenza sits between Knight Tile and Van Gogh in the Karndean lineup and offers herringbone layouts with a distinctive design approach. The collection focuses on characterful wood effects with pronounced grain detail and natural-looking surface variation. Palio Essenza herringbone is a strong option for customers who want more visual depth and personality than Knight Tile provides, while staying below the Van Gogh price point.
Karndean Van Gogh — The Most Popular Karndean Herringbone
Van Gogh is Karndean’s best-selling herringbone collection. With a 0.55mm wear layer and a design palette built around rich, realistic wood effects — pale limed oaks through to deep walnuts and smoked finishes — Van Gogh herringbone produces a design-led floor with the fully bonded, completely flat finish that only glue-down LVT can deliver. The Van Gogh herringbone plank sizes are purpose-designed for the pattern, so proportions work naturally across different room sizes without the awkward cuts that come from using standard plank formats in a herringbone layout.
Van Gogh herringbone is the default recommendation for customers who want a premium-looking Karndean herringbone floor in glue-down format at a mid-range price point.
Karndean Van Gogh Rigid Core — Herringbone in Click Format
Van Gogh Rigid Core takes selected Van Gogh herringbone designs and delivers them in a rigid core SPC click format, with a waterproof core, 0.55mm wear layer, pre-attached acoustic underlay and a 20-year residential warranty. This is herringbone without the demands of a glue-down installation — no adhesive, less subfloor preparation and a faster fit. For renovation projects, fit-overs and rooms where minimising disruption matters, Van Gogh Rigid Core herringbone is a strong choice.
The visual result is very close to glue-down Van Gogh herringbone. The main practical difference is underfoot feel — rigid core click has a slightly different feel to a fully bonded glue-down floor, and the acoustic underlay adds a subtle softness that some homeowners prefer.
Karndean Art Select — Premium Herringbone and Parquet
Art Select is Karndean’s premium residential collection, and it offers the most sophisticated herringbone and parquet options in the range. A 0.7mm wear layer, larger plank formats and enhanced surface detailing make Art Select herringbone the choice for statement floors — hallway entrances, open-plan living areas and rooms where the floor is intended to be the focal point.
Art Select also opens up parquet layouts — smaller blocks arranged in geometric patterns such as basket weave — which are not available in the other Karndean collections. If you want the most design-forward Karndean herringbone floor, Art Select is where you should be looking.
Glue-Down vs Rigid Core Click for Herringbone
This is one of the most common questions we get from customers planning a Karndean herringbone floor. Both formats produce an excellent result, but they suit different situations:
| Factor | Glue-Down (Knight Tile / Palio Essenza / Van Gogh / Art Select) | Rigid Core Click (Van Gogh Rigid Core) |
|---|---|---|
| Finish | Completely flat, fully bonded to subfloor | Floating floor with pre-attached underlay |
| Subfloor prep | Requires smooth, level, dry subfloor — professional preparation essential | More forgiving of minor imperfections |
| Installation speed | Slower — adhesive cure time, more precision at perimeters | Faster — click-lock, no adhesive |
| Wear layer options | 0.3mm (Knight Tile), 0.55mm (Palio Essenza / Van Gogh), 0.7mm (Art Select) | 0.55mm (Van Gogh Rigid Core) |
| Underfloor heating | Compatible (27°C max surface temp) | Compatible (27°C max surface temp) |
| Best for | New builds, premium projects, rooms where the floor will not need to be lifted | Renovations, fit-overs, rooms where future access to the subfloor may be needed |
If you are unsure which format is right for your project, contact us and we can advise based on your subfloor condition, room use and budget.
Where Does Herringbone Work Best?
Herringbone is one of the most versatile laying patterns and works well in a wide range of rooms:
- Hallways and entrance areas: The directional pattern draws the eye through the space and creates an immediate impression. Karndean herringbone in a hallway is one of the most popular installations we carry out.
- Kitchens: Herringbone adds design interest to a room that often has large, unbroken floor areas. Karndean’s full water resistance makes it a practical choice for kitchen flooring.
- Living rooms and open-plan spaces: The pattern adds warmth and texture to larger rooms without dominating the space. In open-plan layouts, herringbone can visually zone different areas.
- Dining rooms: A herringbone floor under a dining table is a classic combination — the pattern provides visual depth that complements furniture without competing with it.

Installation Considerations for Karndean Herringbone
Herringbone layouts are professional installations — they are not DIY-friendly, even in rigid core click format. The precision required (accurate starting points, consistent spacing, clean diagonal cuts at perimeters) means an experienced, approved fitter is essential. Poor installation of a herringbone floor is immediately visible in a way that a misaligned standard plank layout might not be.
Glue-down herringbone (Van Gogh, Art Select) requires careful subfloor preparation — the substrate must be smooth, level and dry. Any imperfection in the subfloor will telegraph through a glue-down LVT floor, and herringbone layouts amplify this because the pattern creates strong visual lines that make any misalignment obvious.
Rigid core click herringbone (Van Gogh Rigid Core) is more forgiving of minor subfloor imperfections, but the layout precision is equally important. The click-lock mechanism makes the physical installation faster, but getting the starting lines and border cuts right still requires skill and experience.
All herringbone Karndean installations are covered by the full manufacturer warranty when carried out by an approved retailer. At Grosvenor Flooring, our fitting teams are experienced with herringbone across all Karndean collections.
How Karndean Herringbone Compares to Other Brands
If herringbone is your priority, it is worth comparing Karndean’s offering against other brands in our range:
- Amtico: Amtico offers herringbone across Spacia, Form and Signature, with Signature providing the most bespoke options including borders, feature strips and custom combinations. Amtico Signature herringbone is arguably the most design-flexible herringbone LVT on the market, but at a premium price point. At the mid-range 0.55mm level, Karndean Van Gogh and Amtico Spacia herringbone are closely matched on both specification and price. For a full comparison, see our Amtico vs Karndean guide.
- Nordikka: Tromso Herringbone LVT (glue-down) and Bodo Herringbone SPC (click) offer herringbone at a more accessible price. If you want herringbone on a tighter budget with transparent online pricing, Nordikka is well worth considering.
