6.5mm Thick Luxury Vinyl Flooring

6.5mm is specialist retrofit territory — a thickness specifically engineered for difficult floors where the existing surface is significantly uneven or where acoustic isolation is critical. Most 6.5mm boards carry a 3–3.5mm rigid core with a thicker factory-attached acoustic or moisture-resistant underlay (2–3mm). The extra total thickness adds weight and stiffness, making the board almost impossible to move during installation and capable of spanning large gaps in old floors without deflection.

6.5mm is the choice for listed properties with timber floors where subfloor levelling is impractical, and for upper-storey apartments where sound isolation to the flat below matters. See samples at the 24/7 smart-lock Altrincham showroom or request a same-day quote with existing floor photos and room dimensions.

What Does 6.5mm Thickness Actually Mean?

6.5mm (6.5 millimetre) is the total board thickness including a thicker factory-attached backing — typically 2–3mm of dense acoustic foam or cork/rubber composite. The rigid core beneath is 3–3.5mm of solid SPC or composite material. The wear layer sits on top. The substantial total thickness and thicker backing layer make 6.5mm noticeably heavier and stiffer than 6mm, with superior acoustic performance and subfloor-bridge capability.

6.5mm in the Thickness Ladder

6.5mm is upper-range retrofit specialist territory. Below it (6mm) are standard retrofit formats. Above it (8mm+) are looselay and extra-thick formats for the most difficult installations. For retrofit projects where the existing floor is significantly compromised but you want click-lock convenience rather than looselay, 6.5mm is the choice.

Installation Format: Click-Lock with Thick Attached Underlay

6.5mm is click-lock and floating, with a factory-bonded thick acoustic or moisture-resistant underlay. The weight of the board and the substantial backing mean minimal movement during installation — the floor essentially locks itself in place through sheer mass. Installation is straightforward but requires care to position correctly before clicking because the weight makes repositioning difficult. The stiffness handles old, uneven timber floors that thinner formats would struggle with.

Underfloor Heating Compatibility

6.5mm with thick acoustic underlay is not compatible with underfloor heating — the thick backing provides too much insulation. If UFH is required, use thin glue-down formats only. Check with the manufacturer before specifying.

Thickness Does Not Determine Durability — Wear Layer Does

**The thick construction and acoustic underlay give you subfloor-bridging power and sound isolation; the wear layer determines durability.** Most 6.5mm options carry a 0.3mm wear layer — standard for commercial and retrofit use. The thick core does not add durability — it adds mechanical support and acoustic performance. Compare wear-layer specs when comparing options. Read our 0.3mm wear layer guide.
