6mm Thick Luxury Vinyl Flooring
6mm is the workhorse of premium retrofit LVT — thick enough to feel genuinely substantial, stiff enough to handle poor subfloors without levelling compound, and heavy enough to stay in place without adhesive. Most 6mm boards carry a robust 2.5–3mm rigid core with a factory-attached acoustic or moisture-barrier backing. This thickness is the industry standard for upper-storey apartments, timber-floor retrofits, and high-end domestic projects where comfort and sound isolation matter.
6mm is the retrofit specialist’s choice — the thickness that makes difficult old floors manageable. See samples in person at the 24/7 smart-lock Altrincham showroom or request a same-day quote with existing floor photos and room details.
What Does 6mm Thickness Actually Mean?
6mm (6 millimetre) is the total board thickness. The rigid core is typically 2.5–3mm of dense SPC or rigid composite, making the board substantial and very stiff. Most 6mm boards include a factory-attached backing — either acoustic underlay or a moisture-barrier layer — that adds to the total thickness. The wear layer sits on top. At 6mm, boards feel premium, sound good underfoot, and bridge significant subfloor imperfections without cracking or deflection.
6mm in the Thickness Ladder
6mm is the beginning of specialist retrofit territory. Below it (5–5.5mm) are lighter options suitable for better subfloors. Above it (6.5–8mm) are formats with even thicker acoustic underlays or looselay construction. For straightforward retrofit jobs on difficult timber or concrete floors, 6mm is the most common choice.
Installation Format: Click-Lock Rigid Core, Typically With Underlay
6mm is click-lock and floating. Most 6mm boards come with factory-attached backing (underlay or moisture barrier), so no additional underlay layer is needed — the board includes it. Installation is straightforward: click the boards together and let the weight and backing do the work. The stiffness is substantial enough to bridge minor dips and high spots in old concrete or timber floors without self-levelling.
Underfloor Heating Compatibility
6mm with attached acoustic underlay is not suitable for underfloor heating — the backing insulates and blocks heat transfer. If UFH is a requirement, use thin glue-down formats or thin rigid-core without underlay. Check with the manufacturer before specifying.
Thickness Does Not Determine Durability — Wear Layer Does
**The 6mm thickness and backing give you robustness and acoustic benefit; the wear layer gives you durability.** Most 6mm options carry a 0.3mm wear layer — the same proven spec on thinner boards. Thinner boards with premium wear layers (0.55mm or 0.7mm) can actually be more durable. Compare wear-layer specs when comparing 6mm options. Read our 0.3mm wear layer guide.
