8.5mm Thick Luxury Vinyl Flooring

8.5mm is the upper limit of standard rigid-core LVT — a thickness for the most challenging retrofit scenarios where existing floors are severely compromised and every gram of acoustic isolation is needed. Most 8.5mm boards carry a 3.5–4mm rigid core with an even thicker factory-attached acoustic underlay (2.5–3.5mm), resulting in a floor that is almost immovable once laid. This thickness is favoured in listed properties with deeply warped timber, in apartment buildings where sound isolation to the flat below is critical, and in commercial installations where the existing floor is too damaged to level.

8.5mm is the retrofit specialist’s choice for problem floors that make even 8mm necessary but where absolute weight and acoustic performance are essential. See samples at the 24/7 smart-lock Altrincham showroom or request a same-day quote with detailed floor photos.

What Does 8.5mm Thickness Actually Mean?

8.5mm (8.5 millimetre) is the total board thickness including a very thick factory-attached acoustic or moisture-resistant underlay (typically 2.5–3.5mm). The core beneath is 3.5–4mm of rigid SPC or composite. The wear layer on top is 0.3mm or greater. The total assembly is extremely heavy (nearly a kilogram per plank in some cases), stiff, and capable of absorbing and dampening almost any subfloor movement or sound. This is as close as you can get to a solid floor without actually pouring concrete.

8.5mm in the Thickness Ladder

8.5mm sits at the practical upper limit of click-lock LVT. Thicker than this and manufacturers begin to move toward stone-replacement formats or bespoke commercial solutions. For standard residential and commercial retrofit work, 8.5mm is the maximum practical thickness that balances weight, stiffness, acoustic performance and ease of installation.

Installation Format: Click-Lock with Maximum Acoustic Underlay

8.5mm click-lock boards are installed floating with factory-bonded extra-thick acoustic backing. The weight of the board (typically 12–15kg per square metre) means installation requires care — boards should be positioned carefully before clicking together because they are difficult to reposition once weighted. The sheer mass of the board, combined with the thick underlay, allows it to bridge very large imperfections in the subfloor without any preparation beyond a damp-proof membrane. This is the format installers choose for listed properties and floors where no other solution is practical.

Underfloor Heating Compatibility

8.5mm with ultra-thick acoustic underlay is not compatible with underfloor heating — the backing provides complete thermal insulation. If UFH is part of the project, use thin glue-down formats only. Check with the manufacturer.

Thickness Does Not Determine Durability — Wear Layer Does

**The 8.5mm thickness, extreme weight and maximum acoustic underlay give you the ultimate in mechanical performance; the wear layer determines durability.** Most 8.5mm options carry a 0.3mm wear layer — standard for the professional retrofit market. The core and underlay do not affect wear resistance — they affect mechanical support and acoustic isolation. Compare wear-layer specs when comparing options. Read our 0.3mm wear layer guide.
