8mm Thick Luxury Vinyl Flooring

8mm is premium-tier LVT — the thickness for extremely difficult retrofit jobs, high-end commercial installations, and projects where weight, stability and acoustic performance are critical. Most 8mm boards ship with either a thick acoustic underlay (click-lock format) or are sold as looselay boards (no underlay, laid loose on a damp-proof membrane). An 8mm board with a 3.5–4mm core and 2–3mm acoustic backing is virtually indestructible — it spans large gaps, absorbs sound, and handles timber floors so uneven that self-levelling would be required for thinner formats.

8mm is the retrofit specialist’s maximum choice — when 6.5mm is not enough, 8mm is the answer. See samples at the 24/7 smart-lock Altrincham showroom or request a same-day quote with detailed floor photos and room measurements.

What Does 8mm Thickness Actually Mean?

8mm (8 millimetre) is the total board thickness. Most click-lock 8mm boards carry a 3.5–4mm rigid core with 2–3mm of acoustic foam or cork/rubber backing factory-bonded to the underside. Looselay 8mm boards are similar but without the underlay — they are laid on a damp-proof membrane rather than click-locked. The wear layer on top is 0.3mm or greater. At 8mm, boards are substantial, heavy, and capable of bridging significant floor defects without any preparation beyond a damp-proof membrane.

8mm in the Thickness Ladder

8mm is the maximum thickness in mainstream residential LVT. Above it are luxury-tile and stone-replacement formats (much thicker and heavier). For click-lock and looselay systems, 8mm represents the upper limit of practical thickness for residential projects. This is the thickness you choose when 6–6.5mm is not enough to handle the existing floor.

Installation Format: Click-Lock with Heavy Underlay or Looselay

8mm click-lock boards are installed floating with factory-attached acoustic backing — click together, no adhesive. The weight does most of the work holding the floor in place. Looselay 8mm boards are laid loose on a damp-proof membrane, unclicked and unglued — they rest entirely on their mass and the membrane below. Looselay is favoured for the worst floors (severe undulation, old solid timber, uneven concrete) because there is literally nothing holding the floor down — it floats, and any movement in the subfloor is absorbed by the board itself rather than stressed through click-locks.

Underfloor Heating Compatibility

8mm with attached acoustic underlay is not suitable for underfloor heating — the thick backing insulates completely. Looselay 8mm without underlay might be marginally acceptable with electric UFH, but thermal performance is poor. If UFH is required, use thin glue-down formats. Check with the manufacturer.

Thickness Does Not Determine Durability — Wear Layer Does

**The 8mm thickness, weight and thick underlay give you mechanical performance and acoustic benefit; the wear layer gives you durability.** Most 8mm options carry a 0.3mm wear layer — standard for commercial use. The core thickness does not affect wear resistance — it affects mechanical support and acoustic performance. Compare wear-layer specs when comparing options. Read our 0.3mm wear layer guide.
