GF Engineered Wood Versailles Pattern

The GF Versailles Pattern collection is the heritage end of our own-brand engineered oak range — large-format parquet panels in European oak, designed to bring serious decorative weight to a room. Versailles is the most traditional of the three GF formats and tends to be specified for period properties, statement rooms and high-end refurbishments where the floor itself is part of the architecture. Every panel is named after a Cheshire or South Manchester village and is buy-online with full pricing, free samples and UK delivery.

Where Herringbone is the smallest format and Planks the most contemporary, Versailles sits at the decorative extreme: large square panels woven from interlocking oak strips, originally developed for the Palace of Versailles in the seventeenth century and still made the same way three centuries later.

About Versailles Parquet

Versailles parquet was first laid in the Palace of Versailles in 1684, designed to replace the marble floors that had previously been used and that were causing the structure beneath them to rot. The format — a large square panel made from interlocking oak strips arranged in a woven pattern, framed by a border — became one of the defining floors of the French baroque, and it has been laid in grand European houses ever since. Modern engineered Versailles panels keep the original pattern but use a multi-ply core for stability, which means the format can now be installed in normal homes and over underfloor heating without the dimensional movement that limited solid Versailles panels in the past.

The GF Versailles collection is built directly with European mills who specialise in this format. The top layer is real European oak, thick enough to be sanded and re-finished, and finishes range from soft natural oils through smoked, brushed and aged effects designed to suit period interiors as well as contemporary statement rooms.

Designs in the Collection

Versailles designs in the GF range are named after Cheshire and South Manchester villages and include Rookery Oak, Peckforton Oak, Utkinton Oak, Dorfold Oak, Oulton Oak and Belgrave Oak. Use the product grid below to browse the current range and see colour, finish and stock status for each.

When Versailles Is the Right Choice

Versailles is a decorative format and reads as a statement floor in any room. It tends to be specified in three situations: a period property where the floor needs to feel right for the architecture, a single statement room (a formal dining room, drawing room or entrance hall) where the floor is meant to be part of the design rather than a background, and a large modern space where the buyer wants a contemporary take on a heritage pattern. It is a less calm choice than a wide plank and a more decorative choice than herringbone — if you are not sure which format is right, samples of all three GF formats can be ordered side by side.

Where to Use GF Versailles

Versailles is suitable in any dry room of the home — most commonly specified in formal dining rooms, drawing rooms and lounges, entrance halls and large open kitchen-diners. As with all engineered wood, it should not be installed in bathrooms or wet rooms.

Underfloor Heating

The GF Versailles collection is compatible with both wet and electric underfloor heating, subject to a maximum surface temperature of 27°C and standard installation guidelines. Acclimatise the panels in the room for at least 48 hours before fitting and follow the supplied installation instructions to maintain dimensional stability and warranty cover.

Installation Notes

Versailles parquet is the most demanding of our three formats to install — the panels are large, the borders need to align cleanly across the room, and any error mid-floor is harder to recover from than with a plank. We strongly recommend an experienced parquet fitter for any Versailles project. For customers in the North West, our own fitting teams handle Versailles installations regularly; for nationwide customers, we are happy to advise on what to look for in a local installer. Our blog complete installation guide for engineered wood flooring covers the basics in more detail.

Yes, depending on the thickness of the real wood wear layer, Versailles panels can be sanded and refinished multiple times over several decades
