0.3mm Wear Layer LVT Flooring

The 0.3mm wear layer is the British LVT mainstream — the spec point that Amtico Spacia, Amtico First, Karndean Knight Tile and our own GF LVT range are all built on, and the wear layer the majority of UK homeowners will end up with whether they realise it or not. It is the right answer for normal-traffic family homes: living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, studies, downstairs cloakrooms and most bathrooms. It is heavy enough to absorb fifteen-plus years of normal domestic life, and light enough that the price stays in the bracket where LVT actually competes with quality laminate and engineered wood. At Grosvenor Flooring it is the wear layer we sell more of than any other.

If you want to see and touch the 0.3mm options before you commit, the 24/7 smart-lock Altrincham showroom has every range we stock on display. Or order up to 5 free GF LVT samples online, or send a quote you have been given through our enquiry form for us to match.

What Does a 0.3mm Wear Layer Mean?

The wear layer on a luxury vinyl tile is the clear, transparent top film that protects the printed design layer underneath. It is the only part of the floor that takes physical wear — every footstep, scuff, scratch, dragged chair leg and dropped saucepan acts on the wear layer rather than the photographic print. A 0.3mm (300 micron) wear layer is the volume sweet spot of the LVT market: thick enough that the major manufacturers will warranty it for 15–25 years of domestic use, thin enough to keep the per-square-metre price accessible. It is the spec Amtico chose for its mid-tier Spacia and First ranges, and the spec Karndean chose for Knight Tile.

Which Rooms Is 0.3mm LVT Rated For?

0.3mm LVT is rated for normal residential use. That covers almost every room in a normal family home: lounges, dining rooms, bedrooms, studies, downstairs cloakrooms, most bathrooms, and standard-traffic kitchens in households without large dogs or unusually heavy use. The areas where we would push you up to 0.55mm or beyond are busy front hallways, utility rooms and boot rooms, and any kitchen-as-thoroughfare where the floor takes both cooking traffic and through-traffic from the rest of the house.

The 0.3mm Ranges We Stock

Amtico Spacia is Amtico’s most popular UK domestic glue-down range — the full Spacia design library on a 0.3mm wear layer with a 20-year domestic warranty, and the range we recommend most often when a customer wants Amtico quality on a normal family-home budget.

Amtico First is the entry tier into the Amtico glue-down family, sharing the 0.3mm wear layer and the same install and care requirements as Spacia, with a slightly tighter design library.

Karndean Knight Tile is Karndean’s mainstream domestic glue-down range and the most cross-shopped product against Amtico Spacia in the UK. 0.3mm wear layer, full Karndean design library, lifetime structural guarantee on domestic installs.

Karndean Knight Tile Rigid Core takes the same Knight Tile designs and rebuilds them on an SPC click-lock core for retrofit projects where lifting the existing floor is impractical.

GF LVT is our own-brand range — premium European spec at 0.3mm, sharp pricing, full online checkout and up to 5 free samples per order. The cleanest answer for any customer who wants the look and feel of a premium glue-down LVT without paying the brand-name premium.

0.3mm vs 0.2mm vs 0.55mm

The step down to 0.2mm is a real drop in spec — we only recommend 0.2mm for buy-to-let, holiday-let bedrooms or other genuinely light-use rooms where the floor is being chosen on first cost rather than longevity. The step up to 0.55mm takes you into Karndean Art Select / Van Gogh and Amtico Form territory: heavier wear layer, longer warranty, premium domestic spec. From there the ladder continues to 0.7mm (heavy domestic / light commercial) and 1mm (full commercial). For a normal family home, 0.3mm is the right answer for maybe 70% of customers and 0.55mm is the right answer for the remaining 30%.

Underfloor Heating Compatibility

Every 0.3mm-rated glue-down range we stock — Spacia, First, Knight Tile, GF LVT — is compatible with both wet and electric underfloor heating up to a maximum surface temperature of 27°C. Follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions, acclimatise the boxes in the room for at least 48 hours, and use the format manufacturers actually recommend for UFH, which is glue down.

Install Format Notes

Most 0.3mm LVT is sold as glue down, with rigid-core click variants available for retrofit jobs. Glue down delivers a flatter, more stable floor and is the default specification for new-build and refurbishment projects with proper subfloor prep. Click LVT is the right call when lifting the existing floor is impractical or when the project has to fit around tenants in occupation. Subfloor preparation matters for both formats — the wear layer thickness has no effect on how much prep you can skip.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a 0.3mm wear layer compare to a 0.2mm wear layer?

A 0.3mm wear layer is significantly more durable and hard-wearing than a 0.2mm wear layer. While 0.2mm is suitable for light residential use in bedrooms and guest rooms, a 0.3mm wear layer is recommended for all areas of the home, including high-traffic spaces like living rooms and hallways, and even for light commercial use.

Is LVT with a 0.3mm wear layer a good choice for kitchens and bathrooms?

Yes, absolutely. The enhanced durability of a 0.3mm wear layer, combined with LVT's inherent water resistance, makes it a perfect choice for kitchens and bathrooms. It can withstand spills, splashes, and the daily foot traffic of these busy areas without a problem.

Will this LVT wear layer prevent scratches from pets?

The 0.3mm wear layer provides a high level of scratch resistance, making it an excellent choice for homes with pets. While no floor is completely scratch-proof, this wear layer is robust enough to handle the scuffs from pet claws and daily activity, keeping your floor looking great for years to come. Using protective mats and keeping pet claws trimmed will further extend the life of your floor.
