0.5mm Wear Layer LVT Flooring

The 0.5mm (500 micron) wear layer is a heavy-domestic LVT spec that sits one step above the mainstream 0.3mm family-home standard and just below the British premium-domestic 0.55mm benchmark. It is the spec point some manufacturers choose for click-lock rigid-core ranges where 0.55mm is not available, and for certain European-spec looselay and commercial-lite collections. At Grosvenor Flooring we use it as a step-up from mid-market LVT when the customer wants longer life than 0.3mm delivers but does not need to pay for the full premium-domestic 0.55mm warranty.

What Does a 0.5mm Wear Layer Mean?

The wear layer is the clear protective top film on a luxury vinyl tile — the layer that absorbs every footstep, scratch, dragged chair leg and scuff the floor takes over its lifetime before the printed design beneath is touched. 0.5mm is 67% thicker than the 0.3mm mainstream spec and only fractionally thinner than the 0.55mm British premium standard. In practice the real-world difference between 0.5mm and 0.55mm is minimal; the difference between 0.5mm and 0.3mm is significant and shows up in warranty length, scratch resistance and resale-ready condition after ten years of normal family use.

Which Rooms Is 0.5mm LVT Rated For?

0.5mm is rated for heavy domestic and very-light commercial use. In practice that covers any room in a busy family home — kitchens, hallways, utility rooms — plus whole-ground-floor open-plan projects, holiday lets with routine turnover, and small office environments. For busier light-commercial work (consulting rooms, salons, boutique retail) we would normally push up to 0.7mm or 1.0mm instead.

Thickness Does Not Determine Durability — Wear Layer Does

This is the most important sentence on the page: wear layer, not total board thickness, is what makes an LVT floor last. A 2.5mm dryback board with a 0.5mm wear layer will outlast a 5mm rigid-core click with a 0.3mm wear layer in every real-world traffic scenario. The wear layer is the only part of the construction that actually takes footfall — total board thickness affects acoustics, subfloor tolerance and retrofit suitability, not lifespan. Compare wear layers first, treat thickness as a secondary consideration.

0.5mm vs 0.3mm vs 0.55mm — How to Choose

If the project is a normal family home on a normal budget, 0.3mm is the right answer — it is the spec Amtico Spacia, Karndean Knight Tile and GF LVT all sit on, and those are excellent mainstream floors. Step up to 0.5mm or 0.55mm when you want a meaningfully longer life, a heavier warranty, and a floor that still looks new after the next kitchen refit. In practice 0.5mm and 0.55mm perform near-identically; the choice is usually driven by which specific range and design library you have fallen for, not by a measurable durability gap. Step up again to 0.7mm or 1.0mm only if the room is taking genuine commercial-grade traffic.

Underfloor Heating Compatibility

All 0.5mm-rated LVT we stock is compatible with both wet and electric underfloor heating up to a maximum surface temperature of 27°C, provided the manufacturer’s installation instructions are followed and the boxes are acclimatised in the room for at least 48 hours before fitting. Glue down is the format manufacturers themselves recommend for UFH because the continuous adhesive bond transfers heat efficiently.

Install Format Notes

0.5mm wear layer LVT is available in glue-down, click-lock rigid-core and looselay formats depending on the specific range. Ask us which format best suits your subfloor, retrofit situation and underfloor-heating setup before ordering.
