2mm Thick Luxury Vinyl Flooring
2mm is the thinnest mainstream LVT thickness — a glue-down-only format that ships on Amtico First and Karndean Knight Tile. It is the format the British market chose for normal family homes where budget and ease of installation matter. 2mm does not mean cheap: Amtico First and Karndean Knight Tile are both premium designs on a budget-friendly spec, and the 0.3mm wear layers they carry are proven domestic performers across millions of square metres of British floor space.
2mm is impossible to retrofit — it is designed as a fresh-install glue-down only and sits so thin that lifting an existing floor and re-gluing on top is impractical. If you are replacing a floor in a property where screed or concrete sits proud of adjacent rooms, 2mm will not work. If you are starting fresh on a level screed, 2mm is almost always the right answer for normal-traffic family homes. What Does 2mm Thickness Actually Mean?
2mm (2 millimetre) is the total board thickness — the measurement from the bottom of the vinyl tile to the very top of the wear layer. A 2mm plank is roughly 4 times thinner than a 8mm rigid-core tile, and is held together by the glue bond to the screed. The format includes a printed decorative layer and a 0.3mm wear layer, with no core material under the design — the backing is closed-cell PVC with a dryback adhesive coating. It is designed to be applied directly to prepared concrete or screed with a flooring adhesive.
2mm in the Thickness Ladder
2mm sits at the bottom of the thickness spectrum. Above it are thicker rigid-core formats (4–8mm) which add click-lock convenience and retrofit capability at the cost of extra height. Below 2mm, you are into true commercial vinyls (1.5mm or thinner) designed for retail environments where absolute flatness matters more than domestic wear. For domestic use, 2mm is the minimum and the right minimum — thinner than this and you lose useful wear-layer protection; thicker and you are buying height you do not need for normal homes.

Installation Format: Glue-Down Only
2mm is glue down and glue down only — it cannot click together because there is no rigid core to lock. It is glued directly to a prepared screed or concrete floor using a flooring-grade adhesive recommended by the manufacturer. Installation requires a level, clean, dry subfloor with no high spots or low spots — this is the reason 2mm cannot retrofit easily. On new-build houses and properties with good concrete, 2mm goes down trouble-free. On older properties with uneven floors, you will need self-levelling compound or a new screed to make 2mm work, which may offset the “budget” upside of the thinner format.
Underfloor Heating Compatibility
2mm glue-down is compatible with both wet and electric underfloor heating up to 27°C surface temperature, provided the manufacturer’s installation guide is followed and the boxes are left to acclimatise in the room for 48 hours before fitting. Glue down is actually the installer’s first choice for UFH because the continuous adhesive bond transfers heat efficiently and avoids the insulation problem you get with floating click-lock floors.
Thickness Does Not Determine Durability — Wear Layer Does
This is the most important sentence on this page: **thickness and durability are not the same thing.** A 2mm plank with a 0.55mm wear layer (which does not exist as a mainstream product, but theoretically could) would outlast an 8mm rigid-core with a 0.3mm wear layer. Durability is determined by wear-layer thickness, not total board thickness. The 0.3mm wear layer on 2mm Amtico First and Karndean Knight Tile is the same 0.3mm wear layer on thicker rigid-core boards — it is a proven, long-lasting spec for normal family homes. If durability is your concern, read the wear-layer spec first, then the thickness spec. If you want to compare durability, compare wear layers. Confused? See our full 0.3mm wear layer guide.
