4.5mm Thick Luxury Vinyl Flooring
4.5mm sits in the middle of the rigid-core spectrum — thicker than entry-level 4mm, thinner than the 5–6mm range where attached underlay becomes standard. 4.5mm rigid-core carries the same click-lock retrofit convenience as 4mm but with slightly more mechanical stiffness and marginally better acoustic performance.
4.5mm works well on uneven subfloors, timber, tile, and concrete. The extra 0.5mm over 4mm gives perceptibly better standing feel without the height penalty of 5–6mm formats. See samples at the 24/7 smart-lock Altrincham showroom or request a same-day quote with your floor plan.
What Does 4.5mm Thickness Actually Mean?
4.5mm (4.5 millimetre) is the total board thickness. The core is typically 1.5–2mm SPC or rigid PVC, providing mechanical stiffness and click-lock capability. The wear layer and backing complete the assembly. At 4.5mm, boards feel noticeably more substantial underfoot than 4mm while still keeping total floor height under 5mm when installed over a thin underlay.
4.5mm in the Thickness Ladder
4.5mm occupies the mid-range of rigid-core. Below it are 4mm entry-level click options. Above it are 5–5.5mm formats where attached underlay and acoustic enhancement begin. For customers who want mid-tier stiffness and acoustic performance without stepping into the 6mm+ territory, 4.5mm is the choice.
Installation Format: Click-Lock Rigid Core
4.5mm is click-lock and floating — no adhesive required. Installation follows the same process as 4mm: lay out with underlay or damp-proof membrane if needed, click the joints together, and let the floor support itself. 4.5mm is suited to retrofit over uneven subfloors, tile, concrete and timber, provided the existing surface is structurally sound.
Underfloor Heating Compatibility
4.5mm rigid-core is compatible with electric underfloor heating if the manufacturer confirms it. Wet UFH is not recommended — the core insulates. If UFH is important, glue-down formats are the better choice. Confirm with the manufacturer before specifying.
Thickness Does Not Determine Durability — Wear Layer Does
**Thickness is the height; wear layer is the durability.** Compare wear-layer thickness when comparing 4.5mm options. Most 4.5mm carries a 0.3mm wear layer — the same spec used on thinner boards and proven for normal domestic and light commercial use. Read our 0.3mm wear layer guide for details.
