5mm Thick Luxury Vinyl Flooring

5mm is the threshold into premium rigid-core LVT — thick enough to deliver noticeably better acoustic performance and standing feel than 4–4.5mm, yet thin enough to avoid complex retrofit transitions. 5mm carries a stiffer core (typically 2–2.5mm) that allows boards to bridge larger subfloor imperfections without self-levelling. It is the format premium commercial ranges like Invictus Ultimus and Project Floors use for hospitality, retail and premium domestic specs.

5mm works beautifully on retrofits — especially over timber, concrete and existing tile — because the extra core stiffness removes the need for underlay and handles minor floor undulation without filler compound. What Does 5mm Thickness Actually Mean?

5mm (5 millimetre) is the total board thickness from backing to top surface. The rigid core is typically 2–2.5mm of dense SPC or composite PVC, making the board mechanically stiff and capable of spanning minor imperfections in the subfloor. The wear layer sits on top, backed by a moisture-barrier layer that helps protect against spills and humidity. At 5mm, boards feel premium and substantial, and the acoustic performance is noticeably better than thinner formats.

5mm in the Thickness Ladder

5mm is the entry point to premium rigid-core domestic and commercial spec. Below it (4–4.5mm) are budget and mid-tier click formats. Above it (5.5–8mm) are specialist formats with attached underlays or acoustic enhancements. For customers who want the best retrofit performance and acoustic behaviour within a compact footprint, 5mm is the answer.

Installation Format: Click-Lock Rigid Core

5mm is click-lock and floating. Installation is straightforward — the extra core stiffness means most subfloors (concrete, tile, timber, old screed) require no levelling compound if reasonably sound. Lay underlay or damp-proof membrane per the manufacturer’s guide, click the boards together, and let gravity do the work. No adhesive required. The stiffness is the whole point — you can retrofit difficult floors with minimal preparation.

Underfloor Heating Compatibility

5mm rigid-core is suitable for electric underfloor heating if the manufacturer confirms it. Wet UFH is not advised — the rigid core insulates and slows heat transfer. If UFH is essential, glue-down formats are better. Check with the manufacturer before ordering.

Thickness Does Not Determine Durability — Wear Layer Does

**The 5mm thickness gives you mechanical stiffness and retrofit capability; the wear layer gives you durability.** Most 5mm options carry a 0.3mm wear layer — proven for heavy domestic and light commercial use. Thinner boards with thicker wear layers (e.g., 4mm with 0.55mm wear layer) can be more durable. Compare wear-layer specs when comparing 5mm options. Read our 0.3mm wear layer guide.
