GF Engineered Wood Planks

The GF Planks collection is the wide-board oak side of our own-brand engineered wood range — calm, contemporary European oak boards built for whole-house projects, larger rooms and open-plan layouts. Every plank is named after a Cheshire or South Manchester village, and every floor is buy-online with full pricing, free samples and UK delivery.

Where our Herringbone collection is built around pattern, the Planks collection is built around the board itself: long, wide, multi-ply oak floors that read as modern and understated. The format suits buyers who want the room to feel calm rather than decorative — open-plan kitchens, large lounges, master bedrooms and whole-house refurbishments where the same floor flows through several rooms.

About GF Engineered Wood Planks

The wide-board engineered oak floor has been the default choice for premium UK refurbishments for the last decade — and the brands that dominate the category know it. Most well-known plank ranges sell at £80–£120/m² before fitting, much of which is brand premium rather than spec. Our GF Planks collection is built to give you the same European oak, the same multi-ply core and the same hand-finished surfaces at a sharper price point, by working directly with the mills and selling under our own label rather than through a national retailer network.

Every GF plank uses a multi-ply birch or pine core for dimensional stability, with a real European oak top layer thick enough to be sanded and re-finished years down the line. Finishes include natural oils, hard-wearing lacquers, brushed surfaces, smoked tones and white-washed effects, so the floor can be matched to almost any interior scheme.

Designs in the Collection

Plank designs in the GF range are named after Cheshire and South Manchester villages and include — among others — Bollington Oak, Eccleston Oak, Smithy Oak, Churton Oak, Tattenhall Oak, Goostrey Oak, Acton Oak, Eaton Oak, Cholmondeley Oak, Whitegate Oak, Queens Oak, Aldford Oak, Reaseheath Oak, Malpas Oak, Budworth Oak, Tatton Oak and Bowdon Oak. Use the product grid below to browse the current range and see colour, finish and stock status for each.

Why Choose a Wide Plank?

A wide plank is the most forgiving and most modern way to lay an engineered oak floor. Because each board is large, the floor reads as one continuous surface rather than as a pattern, which lets it recede into a scheme rather than dominate it. That makes wide planks particularly well suited to open-plan layouts where the floor flows through a kitchen, dining area and lounge — a herringbone pattern in a 60m² open-plan space can become busy, whereas a wide plank reads as quiet and architectural. If you would still prefer a decorative pattern, our GF Herringbone collection uses exactly the same European oak, and you can order samples of both for a side-by-side comparison.

Where to Use GF Planks

GF Planks are suitable in any dry room of the home — most often specified across lounges, kitchens, dining rooms, hallways and bedrooms. They are also our most popular choice for whole-house projects where the same floor needs to flow through several rooms. As with all engineered wood, planks should not be installed in bathrooms or wet rooms.

Underfloor Heating

The GF Planks collection is compatible with both wet and electric underfloor heating, subject to a maximum surface temperature of 27°C and standard installation guidelines. Acclimatise the boards in the room for at least 48 hours before fitting and follow the supplied installation instructions to maintain dimensional stability and warranty cover.

Installation Notes

Wide-board engineered planks are straightforward to install for a competent fitter — the format is much more forgiving than herringbone or Versailles, and the long boards mean fewer cuts per square metre. We recommend a glued or secret-nailed installation over a properly prepared subfloor for the best long-term result. For customers in the North West, our own fitting teams handle GF Planks installations regularly. Our blog complete installation guide for engineered wood flooring covers the basics in more detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install engineered wood planks over underfloor heating?

Yes, engineered wood is the best real wood option for underfloor heating. Its layered construction allows it to expand and contract safely with temperature changes without gapping or warping.

How many times can engineered wood be sanded?

This depends on the thickness of the top wear layer (lamella). Typically, a 4mm wear layer can be sanded 2 to 3 times, allowing the floor to last for 30 years or more with proper care.

Is engineered wood as durable as laminate?

In terms of scratch resistance, high-end laminates can be tougher; however, engineered wood is a natural product that ages beautifully and can be repaired or refinished, whereas laminate must be replaced once damaged.

What is the difference between a lacquered and an oiled finish?

Lacquered finishes sit on top of the wood like a protective varnish, offering a smoother look and high liquid resistance. Oiled finishes soak into the grain, providing a more natural, matte appearance and allowing for easy spot repairs.

Why should I choose professional installation over DIY?

Wood is a natural material that requires specific expansion gaps and subfloor preparation. Professional installation ensures these technical requirements are met, validating your warranty and ensuring a quiet, level finish.
