0.55mm Wear Layer LVT Flooring
The 0.55mm wear layer is the premium-domestic British LVT standard — the spec point Karndean built its flagship Art Select and Van Gogh ranges on, and the spec Amtico chose for its Form herringbone collection. It is the wear layer the British market has been buying for two decades for premium family homes, and the wear layer that comes with the longest standard domestic warranties in the LVT category. At Grosvenor Flooring 0.55mm sits between the mainstream 0.3mm spec we use for normal-traffic family homes and the heavy-domestic / light-commercial 0.7mm spec we recommend for high-traffic kitchens and small commercial work.
If your project is a premium family home, a substantial refurb, or any room where you want a 25-year-plus floor without paying full commercial prices, 0.55mm is almost always the right answer. See it in person at the 24/7 smart-lock Altrincham showroom or send a quote you have been given through our enquiry form for us to match.
What Does a 0.55mm Wear Layer Mean?
The wear layer on a luxury vinyl tile is the clear protective top film that absorbs every footstep, scuff, scratch and dragged chair leg the floor takes over its lifetime. A 0.55mm (550 micron) wear layer is roughly 83% thicker than the 0.3mm wear layer used on Amtico Spacia and Karndean Knight Tile, and roughly half the thickness of the 1mm wear layer used on Amtico Signature. It is the British premium-domestic standard — heavy enough to carry a 25-year domestic warranty (Karndean Art Select / Van Gogh) and to outlast the next two kitchen refits, light enough to keep the price below full commercial spec.
Which Rooms Is 0.55mm LVT Rated For?
0.55mm LVT is rated for premium domestic and very-light commercial use. In practice that means: any room in a family home including busy kitchens, hallways and utility rooms; whole-ground-floor projects where the same floor needs to run continuously through high- and low-traffic zones; second homes and holiday lets where the floor needs to look new for a long time; small offices, consulting rooms, hairdressers and beauty salons. The areas where we would push you up to 0.7mm or 1mm are dedicated commercial environments — restaurants, busy retail, hospitality public areas — where the floor is taking commercial-grade traffic all day every day.
The 0.55mm Ranges We Stock
Karndean Art Select is Karndean’s flagship glue-down range and the most-specified premium domestic LVT in Britain. Full Art Select design library, 0.55mm wear layer, 25-year domestic warranty plus a lifetime structural guarantee. The product Karndean built its reputation on.
Karndean Van Gogh sits alongside Art Select on the same 0.55mm wear layer, with a different design library focused on long, wider plank wood-effect formats. Same warranty, same install requirements, same domestic spec.
Karndean Van Gogh Rigid Core takes the Van Gogh design library and rebuilds it on an SPC click-lock core — useful for retrofit projects where lifting the existing floor is impractical, while preserving the 0.55mm wear layer.
Amtico Form is Amtico’s herringbone-and-parquet glue-down range, sharing the 0.55mm wear layer with the Karndean flagships and giving you Amtico’s design language at premium-domestic spec.
Karndean Palio Essenza is Karndean’s design-led mid-tier range and is also worth a look at this spec point — confirm the exact wear layer of any individual product with us before ordering and we will pull the manufacturer spec sheet for you.
0.55mm vs 0.3mm vs 0.7mm — How to Choose
The decision is simpler than the spec sheets make it look. 0.3mm is the right answer for a normal family home on a normal budget — Amtico Spacia, Karndean Knight Tile and GF LVT all sit here and they are excellent floors. Step up to 0.55mm if you want a premium-domestic spec, the longest standard domestic warranty in the LVT category, or you simply want the floor to outlast the kitchen refit and the one after that. Step up again to 0.7mm only if the room is taking commercial-grade traffic in a domestic setting (large family with pets, kitchen-as-thoroughfare, holiday let with weekly turnover) or genuine light commercial use. The price gap between 0.3mm and 0.55mm is real but smaller than most customers expect, and the warranty step-up is significant.
Underfloor Heating Compatibility
Every 0.55mm-rated glue-down range we stock — Art Select, Van Gogh, Form — is compatible with both wet and electric underfloor heating up to a maximum surface temperature of 27°C, provided the manufacturer’s installation instructions are followed and the boxes are acclimatised in the room for at least 48 hours before fitting. Glue down is the format manufacturers themselves recommend for UFH because the continuous adhesive bond transfers heat efficiently and removes the air-gap insulation problem you get with floating floors.
Install Format Notes
The 0.55mm flagships are predominantly glue down, with rigid-core click variants (Karndean Van Gogh Rigid Core) for retrofit work. Glue down is the format the premium ranges are designed around and the format we specify by default on supply-and-fit projects from Altrincham. Subfloor preparation is critical — flat, clean, dry, primed — and our own teams handle the prep, the levelling compound and the install on every supply-and-fit job across Cheshire and South Manchester.
Why 0.55mm Has Been the British Premium Standard for Twenty Years
Karndean essentially defined this spec point in the UK market. Art Select on a 0.55mm wear layer with a 25-year domestic warranty became the benchmark every premium LVT in Britain has been measured against since the early 2000s, and Van Gogh extended the same spec into wider-format wood-effect designs. Amtico responded with Form on the same wear layer for the herringbone and parquet market. The result is that almost any premium domestic LVT recommendation from a serious British retailer will land at 0.55mm by default — it has the right balance of longevity, design library, warranty and price for the premium-family-home customer who makes up the bulk of UK LVT demand.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the main benefit of a 0.55mm wear layer?
The primary benefit is its exceptional durability and longevity. A 0.55mm wear layer is a commercial-grade specification, providing the highest level of protection against scratches, scuffs, and heavy foot traffic. It ensures the floor’s appearance remains pristine for an extended period, even in the most demanding environments.
Is a 0.55mm wear layer necessary for a residential home?
While a thinner wear layer (e.g., 0.3mm or 0.4mm) is sufficient for most homes, a 0.55mm wear layer is an excellent choice for very active households, especially those with children and large pets. It offers the ultimate peace of mind and is a long-term investment that will withstand virtually anything daily life can throw at it.
How does LVT with a 0.55mm wear layer resist stains?
The thick wear layer, combined with a protective top coating, makes the surface of the LVT non-porous and highly resistant to stains. Common household spills like coffee, wine, or food can be easily wiped away without penetrating the surface. This makes it a hygienic and easy-to-clean flooring option for any room.
