Engineered Wood Plank Flooring

The wide-board plank is the default specification for engineered wood projects in modern UK homes. It is the format that flows most naturally through several rooms at once, the format that suits open-plan ground floors and the format that reads as calm and contemporary rather than decorative, letting the rest of the scheme do the work while the floor sits quietly underneath. Engineered construction is what makes a wide-board plank realistic: solid timber moves too much across a wide board for centrally heated homes, while a multi-ply engineered core stays flat.

At Grosvenor Flooring we cover the engineered wood plank category with two collections that complement each other. GF Engineered Wood Planks is our own-brand wide-board oak library, named after Cheshire and South Manchester villages: premium spec, sharp pricing, full online checkout, free samples and UK delivery. V4 Wood Flooring covers the rest of the plank market through four wide-board oak collections: Alpine rustic-grade wide planks, Driftwood extra-long brushed boards, Heritage traditional planks and Tundra for maximum stability over UFH, sold on a Request a Price basis.

What Is an Engineered Wood Plank?

An engineered wood plank is a long, wide oak board built on a multi-ply core. Unlike a parquet block, which is small format and laid in a geometric pattern, a plank is laid in straight, parallel runs across the length of the room, the way most people picture a wood floor. Plank widths typically range from around 150mm at the narrow end to 260mm or wider for the most premium ranges and lengths from 1m up to extra-long boards exceeding 2.2m. The construction is the same as any other engineered wood floor: a stable cross-grain core topped with a real European oak wear layer, typically 3mm to 6mm thick and thick enough to be sanded and re-finished years down the line.

Fixed Length, Random Length and Wide Board

Within the plank category there are three sub-formats worth knowing about. Fixed length plank means every board in the pack is the same length, which gives a more uniform, rhythmic look. Random length plank means the pack contains a mix of board lengths, which gives a more natural, traditional look and is the default for most premium ranges. Wide board refers to plank widths above roughly 200mm and is the default specification for whole-house projects today.

The Plank Collections We Stock

GF Engineered Wood Planks is the wide-board sub-collection of our own-brand range. We work direct with European mills, control the spec sheet and sell under our own label rather than through a national distributor, which lets us offer the same premium oak for noticeably less than comparable brand-name ranges. Designs include Bollington Oak, Eccleston Oak, Smithy Oak, Churton Oak, Tattenhall Oak, Goostrey Oak, Bowdon Oak and the rest of the Cheshire-named library.

V4 Wood Flooring covers the rest of the plank market: Alpine for rustic-grade wide-board oak, Heritage for traditional and prime-grade boards, Driftwood for extra-long brushed planks and Tundra for maximum dimensional stability over UFH. V4 also offers the Deco collection for design-led parquet formats.

Plank vs Parquet: How to Choose

A plank reads as calmer and more contemporary; parquet reads as more decorative and more designer-led. Plank suits whole-house projects where you want the floor to flow through several rooms; parquet suits feature spaces where the floor is treated as part of the design. There is no right answer, so order samples of both before committing.

Where to Use Engineered Wood Plank

Plank is suitable in any dry room of the home, most often specified across lounges, kitchens, hallways, dining rooms, bedrooms and home offices. As with all engineered wood, it should not be installed in bathrooms or wet rooms.

Underfloor Heating

All plank ranges we stock are compatible with both wet and electric underfloor heating, subject to a maximum surface temperature of 27C and standard installation guidelines. The V4 Tundra collection birch ply core is particularly well suited to UFH projects where dimensional stability is the priority.

Key Takeaways

  • The wide-board plank is the default engineered wood format: long, straight-lay oak boards that flow through several rooms and read as calm and contemporary.
  • Engineered construction is what makes a wide plank realistic, because a multi-ply core stays flat where solid timber of the same width would move in a heated home.
  • Widths run from around 150mm to 260mm and wider with lengths up to over 2.2m; fixed-length, random-length and wide board are the three sub-formats.
  • We cover plank with the own-label GF Planks range (buy online, free samples) and four V4 collections (Request a Price), all suitable over underfloor heating up to 27C.
  • Plank suits whole-house and open-plan projects, while parquet is the more decorative alternative for feature spaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is engineered wood plank flooring?

An engineered wood plank is a long, wide oak board laid in straight, parallel runs, the way most people picture a wood floor. It is built on a stable multi-ply core topped with a real European oak wear layer, so you get an authentic oak surface that stays flat over underfloor heating and can be sanded and re-finished.

What is the difference between plank and parquet?

Plank is laid in straight, parallel boards and reads as calm and contemporary, which suits whole-house and open-plan projects. Parquet is small blocks laid in a geometric pattern such as herringbone or chevron and reads as more decorative. Both use the same engineered oak.

What widths and lengths do engineered wood planks come in?

Widths typically range from around 150mm to 260mm with wider boards on the most premium ranges and lengths run from about 1m up to extra-long boards over 2.2m. Wide board, meaning widths above roughly 200mm, is the default specification for whole-house projects today. Exact sizes are shown on each product page.

What is the difference between fixed length and random length plank?

Fixed length means every board in the pack is the same length, giving a uniform, rhythmic look. Random length means the pack contains a mix of lengths, giving a more natural, traditional look. Random length is the default for most premium ranges.

Is engineered plank flooring suitable for underfloor heating?

Yes. Every plank range we stock works with both wet and electric underfloor heating up to a maximum surface temperature of 27C. The V4 Tundra collection is specified where maximum dimensional stability over a heated floor is the priority.

Which plank ranges does Grosvenor Flooring stock?

Our own-label GF Engineered Wood Planks range is available to buy online with full pricing and free samples. V4 covers the rest of the market through its Alpine, Heritage, Driftwood and Tundra collections, sold on a Request a Price basis. Both can be supplied and fitted across the North West.

Is a wide plank better than a narrow board?

It depends on the room. Wide boards read as calmer and more contemporary and suit larger, open-plan spaces, which is why they have become the default for whole-house projects. Narrower boards can suit smaller or more traditional rooms. Ordering samples and laying them out is the best way to decide.
