Frequently Asked Questions

What types of black LVT are there?

Black LVT comes in three main routes. Black ebony wood reads as a stained polished oak or walnut with visible grain, best where the floor should feel like wood first. Black slate reads as a riven natural-cleft tile with strong texture, ideal for a country kitchen or hallway. Charcoal stone or basalt is a fine-grained, flatter, more contemporary tile for designer bathrooms and minimalist kitchens.

Will black LVT make a room feel smaller?

It can. Black absorbs light, so in a small, north-facing or under-lit room it will make the space feel smaller and show every speck of dust. In a generous, light-filled room it does the opposite, grounding the scheme and letting pale walls and cabinets stand out. Black rewards rooms that are already light and confident.

Does black LVT show dust easily?

Yes, black shows dust, hair and fine surface scratches faster than grey or natural floors. A thicker wear layer (0.55mm as a minimum, 0.7mm or 1.0mm for busy rooms) holds its finish better and a slightly matt, textured black hides marks more than a high-gloss one.

What wear layer should a black floor have?

We recommend 0.55mm as the minimum for a black floor and 0.7mm or 1.0mm where there are pets, children or heavy traffic. The thicker wear layer also gives a deeper, more matt finish that reads as more expensive than the same design at a thinner spec.

What colours of furniture and walls pair well with a black floor?

Black floors work best in three pairings: with crisp white or off-white walls and cabinets for a high-contrast graphic look; with deep saturated colours like Hague blue, forest green or burgundy for a moody scheme; or with warm putty, biscuit and clay walls for a warm contemporary feel. Avoid grey walls with a black floor, which tend to read flat and clinical together.

Which rooms suit black LVT best?

Black works in a generous lounge, a designer bathroom or cloakroom, a Georgian-revival hallway and a contemporary open-plan kitchen with pale cabinets and plenty of light. It is usually the wrong choice for a small utility room or most bedrooms unless the room is large and the scheme is light.
