Brushed Engineered Wood Flooring

Brushing is the surface treatment that lifts the natural grain of an oak board — wire brushes are run across the surface to remove the softer fibres and leave the harder grain proud, giving the finished floor a tactile, hand-worked feel and a subtle three-dimensional surface. The technique is used across most premium engineered oak ranges because it makes the board look more natural, hides minor wear better than a perfectly flat surface, and works particularly well with both oiled and lacquered top coats.

At Grosvenor Flooring, brushed surfaces are available across both GF by Grosvenor Flooring and V4 Wood Flooring — most of the V4 Alpine, Driftwood and Deco collections feature brushed surfaces, as do the majority of GF Cheshire-named planks and herringbone designs.

What Brushing Does

A wire brush, run across the surface of the oak before finishing, removes the softer summer growth fibres and leaves the harder winter grain standing slightly proud. The result is a board with a textured surface that mimics the way natural oak weathers over time — and the difference is significant: a brushed and oiled board reads as a properly hand-finished floor where a flat, sanded board can read as factory-uniform.

Brushed Plus Oil or Lacquer

Brushing is a surface treatment, not a finish — it is almost always combined with either an oiled or a lacquered top coat. Brushed and oiled gives the softest, most natural look. Brushed and lacquered gives a hard-wearing, low-maintenance surface that still has texture underfoot.

Where to Use Brushed Engineered Wood

Anywhere a real oak floor is appropriate — particularly recommended for kitchens, hallways and any high-traffic room where the texture helps disguise day-to-day wear.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "brushed" mean on an engineered wood floor?

During manufacture, the board's surface is passed over wire brushes that remove the softer springwood between the grain lines, leaving the harder grain slightly raised. The result is a tactile, textured surface that emphasises the natural grain pattern.

Does a brushed texture hide scratches?

Yes — far better than a smooth surface. Because the surface is already textured, small scuffs and pet scratches blend into the grain rather than catching the light. Brushed is the go-to finish for family homes and properties with dogs.

Is brushed harder to clean than smooth wood?

Slightly. Dust can settle in the grain texture, so a regular vacuum or soft broom works better than a dry mop. Damp-mopping with a wood-floor cleaner is straightforward.
