R10 vs R11 Slip Resistant Flooring UK Guide (2026): Specification, Standards and Polyflor Safety LVT

R10 and R11 are slip-resistance ratings under DIN 51130, the German industrial standard adopted across UK flooring specification. The ratings matter for any commercial or residential environment where wet conditions, oily contamination, sloped surfaces or barefoot use create a slip risk – which covers a lot more flooring than most buyers realise. This guide covers what R10 and R11 actually mean, where each rating is required, how Polyflor’s slip-resistant LVT range delivers them, and the common specification mistakes that cost commercial projects time and money.

For the broader Polyflor context, see our Polyflor flooring review. For commercial LVT generally, see our commercial vinyl flooring UK buyer’s guide. To browse the slip-resistant LVT range, the Polyflor Expona Control category page lists every Expona Control design we stock.

The Short Answer

R10 covers most everyday commercial and residential wet conditions – office washrooms, residential bathrooms and kitchens, light retail kitchens, hospitality back-of-house. R11 covers heavier wet conditions – commercial kitchens, leisure changing rooms, swimming pool surrounds, food preparation areas. For genuinely heavy wet-zone commercial environments (commercial showers, wash-down areas, industrial wet zones), specifications step up to R12 or R13 sheet vinyl safety flooring rather than LVT. Polyflor’s slip-resistant LVT range delivers R10 across most products and R11 through the Expona Control range; for R12 and above, Polyflor’s dedicated safety flooring sheet products take over.

What R10 and R11 Actually Mean

DIN 51130 is the test method that produces the R-rating. The test involves a person walking on the test sample on a ramp that tilts gradually upwards while the surface is coated in oil. The angle at which the person can no longer maintain footing is the slip threshold, which translates to an R-rating:

R9: Slip threshold between 6 and 10 degrees. Suitable for dry indoor commercial environments without slip risk. Most residential carpet, hardwood and LVT carries R9 or no rating. Not suitable for wet zones.

R10: Slip threshold between 10 and 19 degrees. Suitable for residential bathrooms and kitchens, office washrooms, light retail kitchens, hospitality back-of-house, light commercial wet zones. The standard residential wet-zone rating.

R11: Slip threshold between 19 and 27 degrees. Suitable for commercial kitchens, leisure changing rooms, swimming pool surrounds (dry areas around pools), food preparation areas, light industrial wet zones. The standard commercial wet-zone rating.

R12: Slip threshold between 27 and 35 degrees. Suitable for commercial wet zones with regular standing water – commercial showers, food processing areas, wash-down zones. Typically delivered by sheet vinyl safety flooring rather than LVT.

R13: Slip threshold above 35 degrees. Suitable for the heaviest wet-zone industrial environments. Always sheet vinyl safety flooring or specialist resin systems, not LVT.

For UK floor specification, R10 and R11 are the relevant LVT ratings. Above R11, the specification typically moves out of LVT and into Polyflor’s dedicated safety flooring sheet range or specialist resin floor systems.

The DIN 51097 Barefoot Standard

DIN 51130 uses oil-coated surfaces and shoes. A separate standard, DIN 51097, uses water-coated surfaces and barefoot walking – the standard relevant to swimming pools, leisure facilities, communal showers and any environment where barefoot use is the norm.

DIN 51097 produces an A, B or C rating:

Class A: Slip threshold between 12 and 18 degrees. Suitable for barefoot dry areas adjacent to wet zones, changing room dry zones, communal areas around pools.

Class B: Slip threshold between 18 and 24 degrees. Suitable for barefoot wet areas – shower changing rooms, paddling pools, splash zones.

Class C: Slip threshold above 24 degrees. Suitable for the wettest barefoot conditions – inclined pool surrounds, steps into pools.

For a commercial leisure project (gym, swimming pool, spa, communal shower), both DIN 51130 (R-rating) and DIN 51097 (barefoot class) typically need to be specified. Polyflor’s safety flooring sheet range carries dual ratings; LVT typically does not (which is why true leisure wet zones move to sheet flooring not LVT).

Where R10 Is Required

R10 is the entry-level slip resistance rating for any environment with a wet-zone element. Standard UK building specifications call for R10 in:

Residential bathrooms (showers, bath surrounds, toilet floors). Residential kitchens (where dropped water and food spills are likely). Office washrooms and kitchen areas. Light retail kitchens (cafe back-of-house, sandwich shops, light food prep). Hospitality back-of-house (hotel staff areas, light kitchen prep). School and college toilets. Light healthcare wet zones (GP surgery washrooms, dental practice rinse stations). Reception areas where wet weather entry creates intermittent wet floor conditions.

Polyflor’s residential and standard commercial LVT ranges (Camaro, Camaro Rigid Core, Expona Commercial, Expona Design, Expona Bevel Line, Colonia) all carry R10 as standard. For all these environments, the wider Polyflor LVT range delivers the required slip resistance without needing to step into the dedicated slip-resistant Expona Control range.

Where R11 Is Required

R11 is the commercial wet-zone slip resistance rating. Specifications calling for R11 typically cover:

Commercial kitchens (full restaurant kitchens, hotel kitchens, pub kitchens, cafe production kitchens). Food preparation areas and food processing back-of-house. Leisure changing rooms (gym wet changing rooms, swimming pool changing rooms, communal showers – though the latter often need DIN 51097 barefoot ratings as well). Swimming pool dry surrounds (the dry walkway around the pool). Brewery, distillery and beverage production back-of-house. Light industrial wet zones (laundry rooms, light wash-down areas). Veterinary surgery wet zones. Commercial laundry facilities. Care home wet-zone bathrooms and showers (where R10 is sometimes considered insufficient).

For these environments, R10 is not sufficient and the specification needs to step up. Polyflor’s Expona Control range delivers R11 in LVT format with the commercial design library and durability of the wider Expona family. For environments requiring R12 or R13, Polyflor’s dedicated safety flooring sheet range takes over (we supply these separately – reach out for project-specific specification).

Polyflor Expona Control: The R11 LVT Option

Polyflor Expona Control is Polyflor’s slip-resistant LVT range. It carries R11 slip resistance to DIN 51130, sits at commercial wear-layer specification (0.55mm), and is the LVT product specified for commercial wet zones where the design library of LVT is preferred over the more utilitarian look of sheet vinyl safety flooring.

The Expona Control range delivers R11 through factory-applied surface aggregates embedded into the wear layer – microscopic mineral particles that disrupt the smooth surface and provide the slip-resistant grip. The aggregates are bonded into the wear layer at manufacture, not applied as a surface coating, which means the slip resistance is durable – it does not wear off over the life of the floor.

Expona Control’s design library is narrower than Expona Commercial or Expona Design because the aggregate-embedded surface limits some design styling options. The range covers commercial-leaning wood and stone effects suitable for back-of-house commercial environments, leisure facilities, food preparation areas and commercial wet zones. Detail on the Polyflor Expona Control category page.

Note: Polyflor previously offered a sheet vinyl product range called Polysafe for R11 and R12 wet-zone applications. Polysafe is sheet vinyl rather than LVT, and Polyflor has retired the Polysafe LVT-style products. For LVT-format R11, Expona Control is the current product. For sheet vinyl safety flooring, Polyflor’s safety flooring range covers R11, R12 and barefoot ratings – we supply these separately for project work and they are not stocked on our standard online retail.

Common Slip-Resistance Specification Mistakes

Assuming all LVT carries the same slip rating. Most residential and commercial LVT carries R10. R11 is only delivered by dedicated slip-resistant ranges like Polyflor Expona Control or sheet vinyl safety flooring. Specifying generic commercial LVT for an R11 environment risks slip incidents and specification non-compliance.

Over-specifying R11 for residential bathrooms. R10 is the correct specification for residential bathrooms. R11 LVT is over-spec, more expensive, and the aggregate surface is harder to clean than standard PUR LVT. Use R10 LVT (Camaro, Camaro Rigid Core, Colonia, Expona Commercial) for home bathrooms.

Missing barefoot ratings in leisure specifications. Swimming pools, communal showers and leisure facilities typically need both DIN 51130 (R-rating, shod) and DIN 51097 (barefoot class) ratings. LVT covers R10 and R11 in shod conditions but rarely covers barefoot ratings. For leisure facilities, sheet vinyl safety flooring with dual ratings is usually the right specification.

Confusing slip resistance with waterproofing. Slip resistance is about traction on a wet surface. Waterproofing is about water ingress through the floor. LVT carries both: R-rated for slip resistance and water-resistant for surface waterproofing. For submersible or wet-screed environments where water management matters more than slip, the specification considerations are different.

Cutting corners on substrate prep in wet zones. R11 LVT only delivers its rated slip resistance when installed correctly. Poor subfloor prep, wrong adhesive, edges not sealed – all of these can compromise the wet-zone performance. For commercial wet-zone installations, the specification typically requires sealed perimeters, coved skirting and certified installation.

Not budgeting for the R11 step-up. Expona Control lists higher than standard Expona Commercial reflecting the specialist surface treatment. Project budgets often forget the step-up when initial designs called for standard commercial LVT.

Decision Framework: Which Rating for Which Project

Home installation, no commercial element: R9 dry zones, R10 bathroom and kitchen. Polyflor Camaro covers both at standard residential price.

Office, retail or hospitality dry public areas: R9 or R10 throughout. Polyflor Expona Commercial covers this at standard commercial price.

Office washrooms, retail back-of-house: R10. Polyflor Expona Commercial covers this.

Light commercial wet zones (cafe back-of-house, light kitchen prep): R10 usually sufficient. Expona Commercial or step up to Expona Control for added insurance.

Commercial kitchens, food prep: R11. Polyflor Expona Control.

Leisure changing rooms, gym wet zones: R11 for shod, plus DIN 51097 Class B barefoot. Expona Control covers R11; for barefoot ratings, sheet vinyl safety flooring is usually required.

Swimming pool surrounds, communal showers: R11 plus DIN 51097 Class B or C barefoot. Sheet vinyl safety flooring.

Industrial wet zones, commercial wash-down areas: R12 or above. Sheet vinyl safety flooring or specialist resin systems.
