Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring is one of the most practical floor coverings available – realistic wood and stone designs, a hard-wearing sealed surface and a click-fit installation system, all at a lower price per square metre than engineered wood or luxury vinyl. Modern laminate has moved a long way from the product people remember from twenty years ago: the best ranges now offer genuine surface water resistance, deep authentic textures and warranties measured in decades.

Grosvenor Flooring stocks three laminate collections. The core of our range is Quick-Step laminate – the brand most associated with laminate flooring in the UK and the one we recommend by default – alongside the Evergreen and Lignum collections, which sit at different price and design points. Every laminate floor we sell is available to buy online with free UK delivery and we offer supply and fit for customers in Altrincham, Manchester and Cheshire.

Browse the laminate collections below, or explore our wider luxury vinyl flooring ranges if you are still comparing floor types.

What Is Laminate Flooring?

Laminate is an engineered floor built in layers and understanding those layers explains why a good laminate floor performs the way it does. A clear melamine wear layer on top protects against scratches, stains and fading – this is the part that takes the daily traffic. Below it sits the design layer, a high-resolution print that reproduces the grain of oak, walnut or pine, or the texture of slate, concrete and stone. The core is high-density fibreboard (HDF), which gives the plank its strength, impact resistance and dimensional stability and a balancing layer underneath keeps the board flat and adds moisture resistance from below.

The result is a floor that looks convincingly like wood or stone, handles daily family life well and costs less than the natural material it imitates. Advances in printing and embossing mean the best modern laminate carries texture that follows the printed grain – so the floor looks and feels like timber rather than a flat photograph under a shiny coat. Laminate cannot be sanded and refinished the way solid wood can, but for most homes the lower price, easier maintenance and strong scratch resistance are a fair trade.

The Laminate Collections We Stock

Quick-Step laminate is the heart of our laminate offer – seven ranges covering everything from the budget-friendly Creo collection through to the premium 12mm Impressive Ultra and the extra-large planks of Majestic. Quick-Step is the brand that has driven most of the technology in modern laminate, including the HydroSeal water-repellent surface, the Scratch Guard wear layer and the Uniclic click system. It is the collection we point most customers to first, because the range is deep enough to cover almost any project and the build quality is consistent across every tier. For the full retailer verdict on the brand, see our Quick-Step laminate review.

Evergreen and Lignum are our other two laminate collections, offering further design and price options – including herringbone-format laminate, which brings the most sought-after wood-floor pattern into the laminate price bracket. You can browse both from the collection links on this page.

Between the three collections, the laminate range at Grosvenor Flooring covers every mainstream design direction – traditional and contemporary oak, characterful textured finishes, stone and tile effects and herringbone – across a wide spread of budgets.

Laminate vs LVT vs Engineered Wood

Laminate, luxury vinyl and engineered wood each suit different priorities and choosing well starts with being honest about what matters most for your project.

Laminate is the most affordable of the three. It gives a realistic wood or stone look with a tough, easy-clean surface and a quick click-fit installation. Its HDF core means standard laminate is water-resistant rather than fully waterproof, though water-repellent ranges have closed much of that gap. It is the natural choice for living rooms, bedrooms, hallways and home offices and – with a HydroSeal range – for kitchens.

Luxury vinyl (LVT) is fully waterproof through its construction rather than just its surface, which makes it the safer choice for bathrooms and genuine wet areas. It is warmer and quieter underfoot than laminate and generally costs more. Our luxury vinyl flooring collection covers the LVT alternative in full.

Engineered wood is real timber over a stable plywood base. It is the most expensive of the three, can be sanded and refinished and adds genuine material value to a home – but it needs more care around moisture and traffic. For a hard-wearing, design-led floor at a sensible budget, laminate is often the right answer. If a floor needs to survive a genuine wet room, or you want the quietest and warmest finish, LVT earns its premium; if you want real wood underfoot, engineered timber is the one to choose.

Understanding AC Ratings

The AC rating – Abrasion Class – is the single most useful number when comparing laminate. It measures how well the wear layer resists abrasion and it scales from AC1 to AC5. AC3 is suitable for general domestic use; AC4 covers heavy domestic and light commercial use; AC5 is built for heavy commercial traffic such as shops and offices.

For a busy family home, AC4 is the sensible target – it gives a comfortable margin over everyday wear from children, pets and furniture and it is the rating most quality laminate carries. A lower AC rating is not necessarily a problem in a quiet bedroom, but for hallways, kitchens and open-plan living the higher rating pays for itself in how long the floor keeps its finish.

Water Resistance and HydroSeal

Water is the traditional weakness of laminate. Because the core is fibreboard, water that reaches the joints can cause swelling – which is why standard laminate has never been recommended for bathrooms. Modern water-repellent technology has changed that picture significantly.

Quick-Step’s HydroSeal is a water-repellent coating applied to the plank surface and bevels. It stops surface water reaching the joints, which makes HydroSeal ranges genuinely suitable for kitchens and bathrooms when installed and perimeter-sealed correctly. Every current Quick-Step laminate range we stock features HydroSeal. It is worth being clear about the limits: a HydroSeal floor resists spills and splashes and everyday moisture, but no laminate is suitable for a wet room or for prolonged standing water and correct perimeter sealing is essential to the water-resistance warranty. Our guide to whether Quick-Step laminate is waterproof explains HydroSeal and its limits in full.

Laminate Room by Room

Laminate suits the majority of rooms in a typical home. In living rooms, bedrooms, hallways and home offices, any quality laminate performs well – here the choice is about design and AC rating rather than water resistance. In kitchens, a HydroSeal range is the right specification, handling the inevitable spills and splashes of a working room. In bathrooms, a HydroSeal range can be used when installed strictly to guidelines with sealed perimeters, though for a heavily used family bathroom many buyers prefer the fully waterproof construction of LVT. Utility rooms and entrance halls – high-traffic, moisture-prone spaces – are well served by a HydroSeal floor with an AC4 rating.

Laminate Flooring and Underfloor Heating

Most modern laminate, including the full Quick-Step range, is compatible with both water-based and electric underfloor heating, subject to a maximum surface temperature of 27 degreesC. The correct underlay matters – it needs low enough thermal resistance to let heat through efficiently – and the system should be brought up to temperature gradually after installation. Our fitting teams handle underfloor heating installations as standard and we can advise on underlay and commissioning if you are installing yourself.

Caring for a Laminate Floor

Laminate is one of the lowest-maintenance floors available. Day-to-day care is simple: sweep or vacuum with a hard-floor or soft-brush attachment to lift grit and damp-mop with a well-wrung mop and a pH-neutral laminate cleaner when the floor needs it. The things to avoid are the common causes of premature wear – steam mops, abrasive or wax-based cleaners and standing water left to sit. Felt pads under furniture and a doormat at entrances do most of the work in keeping a laminate floor looking new for years.

Frequently Asked Questions

How durable is laminate flooring?

Laminate durability is measured by the AC rating. AC3 suits general domestic use, AC4 covers heavy domestic and light commercial use and AC5 is built for heavy commercial traffic. For a busy family home, AC4 is the sensible target. Many quality ranges, including Quick-Step, also add a reinforced wear layer such as Scratch Guard for extra resistance to scratches and scuffs.

Can laminate flooring be installed over underfloor heating?

Yes. Most modern laminate, including the full Quick-Step range, is compatible with water-based and electric underfloor heating, subject to a maximum surface temperature of 27 degreesC. Use an underlay with suitable thermal resistance so heat transfers efficiently and bring the system up to temperature gradually after installation to keep the warranty valid.

Is laminate flooring waterproof?

Standard laminate is water-resistant rather than fully waterproof. Modern water-repellent ranges have closed much of that gap: every current Quick-Step laminate range we stock features HydroSeal, a coating on the surface and bevels that stops water reaching the joints, which makes those ranges suitable for kitchens and bathrooms when installed and perimeter-sealed correctly. No laminate is suitable for a wet room or prolonged standing water.

How should I clean and maintain my laminate floor?

Laminate is low-maintenance. Sweep or vacuum with a hard-floor or soft-brush attachment to lift grit, then damp-mop with a well-wrung mop and a pH-neutral laminate cleaner when needed. Avoid steam mops, abrasive or wax-based cleaners and standing water. Felt pads under furniture and a doormat at entrances keep the floor looking new for years.
