Both are parquet patterns, but the cut is different. Chevron planks are cut to a 45 or 60 degree angle at each end so the points meet to form a continuous arrow. Herringbone planks are cut square and laid at right angles so they step past each other in a zig-zag. Chevron reads sharper and more directional; herringbone reads more classical.

Chevron is the most demanding parquet format to fit. The angled cuts are unforgiving of set-out errors and the pattern has to be planned carefully from the centre line of the room, so any drift shows across the whole floor.
