Frequently Asked Questions

Is LVT waterproof for a kitchen?

Yes, for kitchen use LVT is effectively waterproof. The vinyl plank has no wood content, so it does not absorb water and a glue-down floor bonded to the subfloor and sealed at the perimeter keeps water out around the sink, dishwasher and fridge. It is the format underfloor heating and kitchen fitters recommend for wet zones.

What wear layer should a kitchen floor have?

We recommend a 0.55mm wear layer as the default for a family kitchen (Karndean Van Gogh, Amtico Spacia) and 0.7mm if the kitchen is the main route to the garden or the hub of a busy household (Karndean Art Select, Amtico Form, Invictus Ultimus). For commercial kitchens, cafes and holiday lets, step up to 1.0mm Amtico Signature.

Should I use glue-down or click LVT in a kitchen?

Glue-down by default. It has no perimeter expansion gap for water to creep into, no floating raft to flex under a heavy island and it bonds continuously for efficient underfloor heating. Click LVT is only appropriate when retrofitting over a floor that cannot be lifted and even then the perimeter must be sealed to commercial standard around every wet point.

How does LVT compare to real wood in a kitchen?

Real and engineered wood will mark and swell from water around the dishwasher and sink over time and it dents more easily. LVT gives the same wood look but is waterproof, more scratch and dent resistant, warmer and quieter underfoot and repairable a tile at a time, which is why it is the more practical kitchen floor.

Will dropping heavy items damage my kitchen LVT?

LVT is hard-wearing and far more forgiving of a dropped pan than stone or porcelain, which can chip or crack. A quality glue-down floor with a 0.55mm or thicker wear layer resists everyday impacts and point loads from island legs and stools and if a plank is ever damaged it can be lifted and replaced individually.

Is LVT suitable for a commercial kitchen?

Yes. LVT is the modern replacement for old-style commercial kitchen lino with the same waterproofing but a better warranty and finish. For commercial kitchens, cafes and holiday lets we specify a 1.0mm wear layer such as Amtico Signature, or a heavy-spec range like Invictus Ultimus, fitted glue-down with sealed perimeters.
