Best Flooring for Bathrooms UK: Waterproof Options That Last

Bathroom flooring has one non-negotiable job: handle water without failing. Every other consideration — appearance, underfoot feel, ease of cleaning, warmth, slip resistance — matters too, but waterproofing is the foundation. Get that wrong and you are replacing the floor inside five years and likely repairing the subfloor underneath.

This guide covers the realistic bathroom flooring options for UK homes in 2026: glue-down LVT, click-fit SPC, traditional tile and a few formats to avoid. We will explain which works where (family bathrooms vs en-suites vs downstairs cloakrooms vs wet rooms), what wear layer to specify, how each option performs over underfloor heating and which products from our range we recommend for each scenario.

What Makes Bathroom Flooring Different

A bathroom floor faces three water-related challenges that most other rooms do not. First, regular standing water from shower overspray, bath splashes and wet feet. Second, prolonged humidity from steam and condensation, which over time can damage flooring that is not designed for it. Third, the occasional leak or overflow that puts the floor underwater for hours rather than minutes.

The flooring needs to be waterproof at the material level (the plank or tile itself cannot absorb water), waterproof at the joint level (no seams for water to penetrate to the subfloor) and stable under humidity changes. It also needs to be slip-resistant enough for wet feet and ideally warm enough to walk on barefoot in winter.

That short list rules out a lot of products: traditional laminate (HDF core absorbs water), engineered wood (real timber top layer reacts to humidity), carpet (obvious reasons) and unsealed natural stone. What is left is luxury vinyl tile (LVT) in either glue-down or click-fit format, ceramic or porcelain tile and a small number of waterproof specialist products. For a deeper look at material-level waterproofing across the LVT category, see our complete waterproof flooring guide.

Glue-Down LVT: The Gold Standard for Bathrooms

Glue-down LVT is the most waterproof flooring format available. Each plank or tile is fully bonded to the subfloor with adhesive, creating a continuous sealed surface with no joints for water to penetrate. The vinyl itself is impervious to moisture. The adhesive seals every joint. The result is functionally a waterproof membrane that also happens to look like wood or stone.

This is why glue-down LVT is the default specification for commercial bathrooms, hotel en-suites, gyms, leisure centres and any space where bathroom flooring failure would be a serious problem. For residential bathrooms with showers, glue-down is the safest specification.

For a head-to-head on installation method, see our glue-down vs click LVT comparison.

Karndean Knight Tile

Karndean Knight Tile is the entry point into the Karndean range and a reliable bathroom choice. The 0.3mm wear layer is sufficient for bathroom traffic patterns (less foot traffic than a hallway, less abrasive wear than a kitchen) and the design library covers wood-effect, stone-effect and traditional tile-effect finishes. The glue-down format means it works in family bathrooms, en-suites and wet rooms.

Amtico Spacia

Amtico Spacia is Amtico’s entry-level glue-down range and well-suited to bathrooms where you want premium design at a sensible price point. The 0.3mm wear layer matches Karndean Knight Tile; the difference is in the finish, embossing and design library. Spacia is particularly strong on stone-effect designs that work well in bathrooms.

Invictus Maximus

Invictus Maximus has a thicker 0.55mm wear layer than the Karndean and Amtico entry ranges, making it overspecified for bathroom traffic but useful if you want one product across the whole ground floor (kitchen, hallway and downstairs bathroom in the same plank). Invictus also offers some of the most realistic wood-effect finishes in the category.

Karndean Van Gogh and Art Select

For premium bathroom installations, Karndean Van Gogh and Karndean Art Select deliver thicker wear layers (0.55mm) and more detailed surface embossing. Worth specifying for high-end bathroom design projects where the floor is part of the visual statement.

Click-Fit SPC: Faster Install, Different Compromise

Click-fit SPC is a rigid-core plank that clicks together with a mechanical lock rather than adhesive. The plank itself is fully waterproof — the stone-polymer composite core physically cannot absorb water. The compromise is at the joints: click-locks are tight but not sealed, so prolonged standing water can seep through and sit on the subfloor underneath.

For downstairs cloakrooms, guest bathrooms and en-suites where water exposure is light, click SPC works well. The fast installation (no adhesive, no curing time) makes it attractive for renovation projects on tight schedules. For family bathrooms with showers and frequent standing water, glue-down is still the safer choice.

If you do go click-fit in a bathroom, two things matter: silicone seal every perimeter edge so water cannot get under the floor at the walls and mop up standing water promptly rather than letting it pool. Done properly, click SPC handles routine bathroom use without issue.

GF SPC

Our GF SPC range is competitively priced rigid-core click flooring with a built-in IXPE underlay. The integrated acoustic backing is useful in bathrooms because it muffles the slightly hollow feel that some click floors have over a tiled or concrete subfloor. Read the GF SPC review for a full breakdown.

Nordikka Click SPC

Nordikka Click SPC is the mid-range click rigid-core option with realistic wood-effect designs. The plank format suits modern bathrooms and the click installation makes it ideal for renovation work where you do not want to tie up the room for adhesive curing.

Karndean Knight Tile Rigid Core

For premium click-fit, Karndean Knight Tile Rigid Core brings Karndean’s design quality into a rigid-core click format. Suitable for the same bathroom scenarios as click SPC: cloakrooms, guest bathrooms and en-suites with careful sealing.

Amtico Click Smart

Amtico Click Smart is Amtico’s click rigid-core range — the answer for bathrooms where you want the Amtico brand and finish in a click format.

Bathroom Flooring by Room Type

Family Bathrooms

The toughest bathroom scenario. Daily use, shower over bath, kids splashing, towels on the floor. Specification: glue-down LVT with a minimum 0.3mm wear layer, perimeter silicone seal, ideally over a level subfloor with no transitions or thresholds inside the wet zone. Stone-effect designs help disguise water marks between cleans; wood-effect designs warm the room visually.

En-Suite Bathrooms

Less traffic than a family bathroom but the same shower exposure. Glue-down LVT remains the safest specification. If you want a matched look running from the bedroom into the en-suite, an LVT plank in the same colour as the bedroom flooring creates seamless flow — just check that the en-suite version is suitable for wet zones (most premium LVT is).

Downstairs Cloakrooms and Guest WCs

Low water exposure (no shower, no bath, just a basin) means click-fit SPC is fine here. Fast install, easy to lift if needed, no adhesive mess. Use any click SPC product from our range. This is the bathroom scenario where click really comes into its own.

Wet Rooms

The most demanding bathroom specification. Standing water is constant and the entire room functions as a shower area. Glue-down LVT works if installed by a competent fitter with proper waterproofing of the subfloor, perimeter sealing and a slight fall to a drain. For full wet rooms, we would always recommend specifying the installation as a complete waterproofed system rather than just specifying the flooring product. Get in touch with the team if you are planning a wet room.

Bathrooms with Underfloor Heating

Both LVT and SPC are compatible with underfloor heating (UFH), though there is usually a maximum surface temperature limit of 27°C. Always check the specific product’s spec sheet before installation. UFH is particularly worth specifying in bathrooms because cold flooring is the single biggest comfort complaint with hard floors. For a full breakdown of flooring compatibility with UFH, see our best flooring for underfloor heating guide.

Bathroom Flooring to Avoid

Laminate

Despite some retailers selling “waterproof laminate”, traditional laminate has an HDF (high-density fibreboard) core that absorbs water. Even “water-resistant” laminate products have limits. In a bathroom with regular shower overspray and standing water, laminate will eventually swell at the joints, lift at the edges and need replacing. We do not recommend laminate in bathrooms. For more on this, see our LVT vs laminate comparison.

Engineered Wood

The plywood core of engineered wood is more stable than solid wood, but the real timber top layer still reacts to humidity changes and standing water will damage it. Engineered wood can work in a downstairs cloakroom with no shower, but in any bathroom with water exposure, we recommend LVT or tile instead.

Solid Wood

Will not survive in any bathroom. Avoid.

Carpet

Once standard in bathrooms in the 1970s; now a hygiene and damp issue. Modern alternatives are warmer underfoot than people expect and far easier to keep clean.

Tile vs LVT in Bathrooms

Traditional ceramic and porcelain tile is the historical default for bathrooms and still a valid choice. Tile is fully waterproof at the material level. The downside is the grout: porous, hard to clean and the single biggest hygiene issue with tile floors over time. Grout also yellows and stains in bathrooms in a way that LVT does not.

The other consideration is underfoot feel. Tile is cold without underfloor heating and unforgiving on dropped objects (kids, glassware, phones). LVT is warmer, quieter and softer underfoot — not soft like carpet, but noticeably less hard than tile or stone. For a deeper look at why this matters, see our most hygienic flooring guide.

Non-Slip Bathroom Flooring

Bathroom flooring needs to provide grip when wet. All glue-down LVT and click SPC products in our range carry slip-resistance ratings appropriate for residential bathrooms (R10 or above is the typical specification). For high-risk users — older buyers, accessible bathrooms, family bathrooms with young children — consider products with a textured surface and a higher slip rating. Most premium ranges include slip-resistant options. Ask the team and we will steer you to the right product for your specification.

Non-slip bathroom flooring is particularly important for accessible bathrooms, care provision settings and family bathrooms with young children. Karndean ranges include slip-resistant variants developed for healthcare specifications. Amtico Spacia and Form both include slip-rated options. Surface texture matters as much as the slip rating itself — deeper embossing provides more grip than a smooth finish.

Bathroom Flooring Ideas

The right design for your bathroom depends on the architectural style of the property, the size of the space and the look you want to create. A few directions that work well in UK bathrooms:

Wood-effect plank LVT. Warm, contemporary and works well in modern and transitional bathrooms. Light oak and natural finishes brighten small bathrooms; smoked and darker oaks suit larger en-suites and create a spa-like feel.

Stone-effect tile LVT. The most traditional bathroom look in a waterproof format. Limestone, travertine and marble-effect tiles work in both classic and contemporary bathrooms. Grout-line embossing in premium ranges convinces close up; no real grout to clean.

Herringbone LVT. Period-appropriate for Edwardian and 1920s bathrooms; also works in contemporary designs as a feature floor. Both wood-effect and stone-effect herringbone are available in glue-down format.

Victorian patterned LVT. Geometric and encaustic-pattern designs for restoring Victorian and Edwardian bathrooms. Black-and-white geometric, decorative pattern tile and traditional Minton-style designs all available in modern LVT. Browse our bathroom LVT collection for current designs.

Karndean Bathroom Flooring

Karndean is one of the most-specified premium brands for UK bathroom flooring. The K-Guard+ surface coating delivers strong slip resistance combined with the brand’s signature design library and proven durability. Karndean glue-down ranges are the right specification for family bathrooms with showers; Knight Tile and Van Gogh both offer extensive wood-effect and stone-effect bathroom designs. For pricing, see our Karndean pricing guide.

Amtico Bathroom Flooring

Amtico is the alternative premium choice for bathroom installations. The Spacia and Form ranges are particularly well-suited — Spacia is the entry point with strong stone-effect and tile-effect designs; Form offers premium wood-effect plank designs for spa-style bathrooms. For pricing, see our Amtico pricing guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best flooring for a bathroom?

Glue-down luxury vinyl tile (LVT) is the best all-round bathroom flooring. The fully bonded surface has no joints for water to penetrate, making it functionally a waterproof membrane. Premium ranges include Karndean Knight Tile, Amtico Spacia, Karndean Van Gogh and Amtico Form — all suitable for family bathrooms, en-suites and wet rooms. For downstairs cloakrooms and guest WCs, click-fit SPC is also a good choice.

Is LVT waterproof in bathrooms?

Yes. LVT is fully waterproof at the plank level — the vinyl cannot absorb water. Glue-down LVT is also waterproof at the joint level because every seam is sealed with adhesive. Click-fit SPC is waterproof at the plank level but the click joints are not sealed, so it is best suited to lower-risk bathrooms (downstairs cloakrooms, guest WCs) or installed with silicone perimeter seals in higher-risk bathrooms.

Can I use LVT in a wet room?

Yes — glue-down LVT is suitable for wet rooms when installed as part of a properly waterproofed system. The subfloor needs to be tanked (waterproofed), the LVT laid to a slight fall toward the drain and all perimeter edges sealed with appropriate sealant. We recommend specifying wet rooms as a complete waterproofed installation rather than just selecting flooring in isolation.

What wear layer should bathroom LVT have?

A 0.3mm wear layer is sufficient for most residential bathrooms because foot traffic is lower than in hallways and kitchens. For family bathrooms with high daily use or homes with mobility aids, a 0.55mm wear layer adds extra durability. Premium bathroom designs often use 0.55mm or above (Karndean Van Gogh, Amtico Form, Invictus Maximus) for the surface quality and embossing detail rather than purely for wear resistance.

Does bathroom LVT need underlay?

Glue-down LVT does not require underlay because it is bonded directly to the subfloor. Click-fit SPC ranges either include an integrated underlay (such as GF SPC or Nordikka Click SPC with built-in IXPE backing) or require a separate underlay to be laid first. Always follow the specific product’s installation instructions.

Can I fit LVT over an existing bathroom floor?

Sometimes. LVT can be laid over existing vinyl, lino or some tile if the subfloor is sound, level and dry. For glue-down LVT, the existing surface needs to be thoroughly cleaned and primed. Loose, damaged or uneven floors need to be removed first. Always commission a competent fitter to assess the subfloor — uplifting existing tile is often the right call for long-term reliability.

Is LVT or tile better for a bathroom?

Both work. Tile is harder, colder and has grout to maintain; LVT is warmer underfoot, quieter and easier to clean (no grout). LVT is also more forgiving of dropped objects. Tile is more historically “traditional” for bathrooms but LVT has overtaken it in most new residential bathroom specifications. For underfloor heating, both work well, though LVT warms faster.

What about bathroom flooring with underfloor heating?

Both LVT and SPC are compatible with underfloor heating up to a maximum surface temperature of 27°C. LVT actually transfers heat more efficiently than tile, so the room warms faster. For a deeper breakdown of UFH-compatible flooring, see our best flooring for underfloor heating guide.

Is bathroom LVT slippery when wet?

Modern LVT carries slip-resistance ratings appropriate for bathroom use (typically R10 or above). Textured surface finishes provide additional grip. For accessibility-focused bathrooms or homes with older or less mobile users, ask about specific slip-resistant ranges — several brands offer enhanced grip options designed for healthcare and care-home specifications.

Do you do free samples of bathroom flooring?
