V4 Deco Herringbone – 10 Designs at £89.99/m2

V4 Deco Herringbone is the broadest herringbone offer in the V4 range and the collection to specify when you want maximum colour choice. Ten designs on a 14mm engineered board with a 3mm real oak (or American Black Walnut) veneer, laid as 90mm x 400mm reversible blocks with a 4-side micro-bevel and tongue-and-groove joint.

The Deco design system’s headline feature is matched plank equivalents. Nine of the ten herringbone designs have identical plank designs in the same wood, same finish, same colour and same 14mm construction. Laid as 70mm x 490mm blocks – narrower and longer than Deco’s 90mm x 400mm – which reads as a slightly finer, more refined herringbone pattern in the room.

Every Tundra Herringbone colour has matching plank AND chevron equivalents in the same wood, same finish. That gives Tundra the widest format flexibility in the V4 range – the only V4 collection where you can specify the same wood across plank, herringbone AND chevron. V4 Tundra Chevron is the only chevron format V4 offers at Grosvenor. Four designs on a 10mm engineered board with a 4mm real oak veneer on a birch ply core, laid as 90mm x 610mm blocks cut at a 45-degree angle at each end so they lock together into the characteristic V-shape rather than herringbone’s interlocked squares.

Chevron reads as more contemporary and design-forward than herringbone. It’s the pattern to specify when the floor is the design statement of the room rather than the background surface. Chevron carries the price premium because the 45-degree cutting angle demands tighter production tolerances than herringbone’s 90-degree cuts and produces more material waste per finished m2.

Herringbone vs Chevron: Which Pattern Should You Choose?

The most common question when specifying V4 pattern flooring is herringbone versus chevron. Both are legitimate parquet layouts with genuinely different visual reads. The distinction:

Herringbone. Rectangular blocks laid at 90 degrees to each other. The blocks interlock into a woven-square pattern that reads as classic and traditional. The pattern has been used in parquet flooring since the 16th century and reads as appropriate in both traditional and contemporary interiors. Best in hallways, dining rooms, living rooms, entrances – any room where the floor should read as elegant and considered without being aggressive.

Chevron. Rectangular blocks cut at 45 degrees at each end so they lock together into a continuous V-shape running the length of the room. More recent as a mass-market parquet pattern (chevron was historically a bespoke high-end floor before machine-cut blocks made it accessible) and reads as more contemporary, more design-forward and more architectural than herringbone. Best in feature rooms, contemporary interiors, entrance halls where the floor should be the design statement of the space.

Practical differences beyond aesthetics:

• Fitting cost. Chevron carries the higher fitting premium because setting-out is more precise and there is less tolerance for error at each 45-degree joint. Herringbone is more forgiving.
• Room shape sensitivity. Herringbone reads well in almost any room shape. Chevron reads best in rooms with clear length axes (rectangular hallways, long living rooms) where the V-pattern can run cleanly in one direction.
• Waste. Chevron produces more manufacturing waste per finished m2 because of the angled cuts. That’s already priced into the £129.99-£149.99/m2 supply cost.

Choose Tundra Herringbone if: UFH is specified and long-term dimensional stability matters, you want the deeper 4mm veneer for longer refinishing life, one of the four Tundra colours (Smoked Oak, Seashell, Misty Grey, Thermo Oak) works for your scheme, or you plan to specify Tundra chevron or plank in adjacent rooms for a three-format matched specification.

Installation, UFH and Warranty

Installation. All V4 pattern flooring (Deco Herringbone, Tundra Herringbone, Tundra Chevron) installs fully bonded only. Pattern layouts need adhesive to hold block tolerances over the floor’s lifetime – floating installations lose alignment over time, so V4 doesn’t offer floating for any pattern format. Bonded installation requires a flat, dry, well-prepared subfloor. Marginal subfloors typically need self-levelling compound before fitting – non-negotiable for pattern layouts because misalignment on a marginal subfloor shows up visibly in the pattern read.

UFH. All V4 pattern designs are UFH-compatible when installed correctly – surface temperature capped at 27 degrees C, gradual ramp-up protocol after fitting, appropriate adhesive for the UFH system, wet or electric UFH accepted. Both brands deliver premium herringbone in oak with tongue-and-groove joints. Kährs’ constructions run at 11mm total thickness with 3.5mm veneer – shallower veneer than Tundra Herringbone’s 4mm but deeper than Deco Herringbone’s 3mm. Both cost £89.99/m2 supply. Deco offers 10 designs (broader colour choice) at 14mm total with 3mm veneer on a standard multi-layer core with matching plank equivalents in each colour. Tundra offers 4 designs (narrower choice) at 11mm total with a deeper 4mm veneer on a birch ply core (V4’s most UFH-friendly construction) with matching plank AND chevron equivalents in each colour. Can I install V4 herringbone floating instead of bonded?

No. All V4 pattern flooring (Deco Herringbone, Tundra Herringbone, Tundra Chevron) is fully bonded only. Pattern layouts need adhesive to maintain block alignment across the floor’s lifetime. Floating installations lose tolerance over time and the pattern joints eventually gap.
