V4 Herringbone Flooring UK 2026: Deco and Tundra Herringbone Guide
Key Takeaways
- V4’s herringbone and chevron parquet offer at Grosvenor spans 18 designs across three sub-ranges: Deco Herringbone (10 designs, £89.99/m2), Tundra Herringbone (4 designs, £89.99/m2) and Tundra Chevron (4 designs, £129.99-£149.99/m2).
- Deco Herringbone offers the broadest colour choice – 10 designs including Frozen Umber, Silver Haze, Smoked Oak, White Smoked Oak and genuine American Black Walnut – all with matching plank equivalents so you can specify one wood across multiple formats.
- Tundra Herringbone runs a deeper 4mm oak veneer on a birch ply core (versus Deco’s 3mm veneer standard core). Fewer colour options but premium construction and V4’s best UFH performance.
- Tundra Chevron is V4’s only chevron format – four colours at 45-degree cut blocks for a contemporary V-pattern. Same 4mm veneer and birch ply core as Tundra Herringbone at premium pricing.
- All V4 pattern flooring installs fully bonded only. UFH-compatible to 27 degrees C surface max. V4 35-year domestic guarantee across the collection. UK-made in Surrey.
V4 is one of the strongest UK engineered wood brands for herringbone and chevron parquet. Where most brands offer one herringbone specification per collection, V4 delivers 18 pattern-format designs across two collections (Deco and Tundra) at three price points, letting you specify the exact wood, format and construction for your project rather than compromising to whatever a single-format brand happens to make. This guide covers every V4 pattern-flooring option Grosvenor stocks, format-by-format comparison and which specification is right for which project.
For pattern-format context beyond V4 see our engineered wood parquet guide. For V4 pricing across every collection see the V4 flooring prices guide and for V4 brand context see our V4 engineered wood flooring guide.
V4 Pattern Flooring at a Glance
Three sub-ranges of pattern flooring live within the V4 collections Grosvenor stocks. Each targets a different design brief:
| Range | Designs | Format | Veneer | Block Dimensions | Core | Price (m2 inc VAT) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| V4 Deco Herringbone | 10 | Herringbone | 3mm oak/walnut | 90mm x 400mm | Multi-layered engineered | £89.99 |
| V4 Tundra Herringbone | 4 | Herringbone | 4mm oak | 70mm x 490mm | Birch ply engineered | £89.99 |
| V4 Tundra Chevron | 4 | Chevron (45-degree) | 4mm oak | 90mm x 610mm | Birch ply engineered | £129.99 – £149.99 |
All three sub-ranges install fully bonded only, carry V4’s 35-year domestic guarantee, are UFH-compatible to 27 degrees C surface max and are drop-shipped free to UK mainland from V4’s Surrey warehouse.
V4 Deco Herringbone – 10 Designs at £89.99/m2
V4 Deco Herringbone is the broadest herringbone offer in the V4 range and the collection to specify when you want maximum colour choice. Ten designs on a 14mm engineered board with a 3mm real oak (or American Black Walnut) veneer, laid as 90mm x 400mm reversible blocks with a 4-side micro-bevel and tongue-and-groove joint.
The Deco design system’s headline feature is matched plank equivalents. Nine of the ten herringbone designs have identical plank designs in the same wood, same finish, same colour and same 14mm construction. That lets you run plank in the main rooms and herringbone in the hallway or entrance with the two floors reading as one continuous wood specification. See our full V4 Deco collection guide for the plank + herringbone matching detail.
All 10 Deco Herringbone designs (ZB SKU prefix):
- Frozen Umber (ZB101) – Cool grey-brown coloured oak
- Silver Haze (ZB103) – Pale grey oak, contemporary Scandi-influenced
- Unfinished Oak (ZB107) – Bare unfinished European oak, ready for on-site finishing (the only unfinished V4 herringbone)
- Natural Oak (ZB108) – Natural European oak
- Brushed Matt Oak (ZB109) – Natural oak with matt sheen and brushed texture
- Smoked Oak (ZB201) – Smoked and UV-oiled European oak
- White Smoked Oak (ZB203) – Smoked and whitewashed, pale but not stark
- Shore Drift Oak (ZB204) – Weathered warm-grey oak
- Black Walnut (ZB205) – Genuine American Black Walnut, smooth-sanded UV oiled finish
- Tannery Brown (ZB206) – Deep tan-brown coloured oak
European oak designs (9 of 10) are FSC 100% certified. The walnut design is UKTR certified.
V4 Tundra Herringbone – 4 Designs at £89.99/m2
V4 Tundra Herringbone is the premium-construction herringbone at the same £89.99/m2 price point as Deco Herringbone. Four designs on an 11mm engineered board with a 4mm real oak veneer (deeper than Deco’s 3mm) on a birch ply core (versus Deco’s standard multi-layer core). Laid as 70mm x 490mm blocks – narrower and longer than Deco’s 90mm x 400mm – which reads as a slightly finer, more refined herringbone pattern in the room.
Every Tundra Herringbone colour has matching plank AND chevron equivalents in the same wood, same finish. That gives Tundra the widest format flexibility in the V4 range – the only V4 collection where you can specify the same wood across plank, herringbone AND chevron. See our full V4 Tundra collection guide for the three-format matching detail.
All 4 Tundra Herringbone designs (TH SKU prefix):
- Smoked Oak Herringbone (TH108) – Deep smoked and UV-oiled oak
- Seashell Herringbone (TH109) – Pale warm-toned oak with subtle character
- Misty Grey Herringbone (TH110) – Cool grey oak, contemporary read
- Thermo Oak Herringbone (TH111) – Warm amber-brown thermo-treated oak
All four are CDE Rustic Oak grade with brushed, core-fumed and UV-oiled finish. Fewer colour options than Deco Herringbone but premium construction and V4’s best UFH performance thanks to the birch ply core.
V4 Tundra Chevron – 4 Designs at £129.99-£149.99/m2
V4 Tundra Chevron is the only chevron format V4 offers at Grosvenor. Four designs on a 10mm engineered board with a 4mm real oak veneer on a birch ply core, laid as 90mm x 610mm blocks cut at a 45-degree angle at each end so they lock together into the characteristic V-shape rather than herringbone’s interlocked squares.
Chevron reads as more contemporary and design-forward than herringbone. It’s the pattern to specify when the floor is the design statement of the room rather than the background surface. Chevron carries the price premium because the 45-degree cutting angle demands tighter production tolerances than herringbone’s 90-degree cuts and produces more material waste per finished m2.
All 4 Tundra Chevron designs (CV SKU prefix):
- Smoked Oak Chevron (CV103) – £149.99/m2. The top-tier V4 pattern specification
- Seashell Chevron (CV104) – £129.99/m2
- Misty Grey Chevron (CV105) – £129.99/m2
- Thermo Oak Chevron (CV106) – £129.99/m2
Same four colours as Tundra Herringbone in the same 4mm veneer specification. That means Smoked Oak Chevron (CV103) and Smoked Oak Herringbone (TH108) share the same wood, finish and veneer depth – specified in two different pattern formats.
Herringbone vs Chevron: Which Pattern Should You Choose?
The most common question when specifying V4 pattern flooring is herringbone versus chevron. Both are legitimate parquet layouts with genuinely different visual reads. The distinction:
Herringbone. Rectangular blocks laid at 90 degrees to each other. The blocks interlock into a woven-square pattern that reads as classic and traditional. The pattern has been used in parquet flooring since the 16th century and reads as appropriate in both traditional and contemporary interiors. Best in hallways, dining rooms, living rooms, entrances – any room where the floor should read as elegant and considered without being aggressive.
Chevron. Rectangular blocks cut at 45 degrees at each end so they lock together into a continuous V-shape running the length of the room. More recent as a mass-market parquet pattern (chevron was historically a bespoke high-end floor before machine-cut blocks made it accessible) and reads as more contemporary, more design-forward and more architectural than herringbone. Best in feature rooms, contemporary interiors, entrance halls where the floor should be the design statement of the space.
Practical differences beyond aesthetics:
- Fitting cost. Chevron carries the higher fitting premium because setting-out is more precise and there is less tolerance for error at each 45-degree joint. Herringbone is more forgiving.
- Room shape sensitivity. Herringbone reads well in almost any room shape. Chevron reads best in rooms with clear length axes (rectangular hallways, long living rooms) where the V-pattern can run cleanly in one direction.
- Waste. Chevron produces more manufacturing waste per finished m2 because of the angled cuts. That’s already priced into the £129.99-£149.99/m2 supply cost.
For the broader parquet context see our engineered wood parquet guide.
Which V4 Herringbone Range Is Right for Your Project?
Choose Deco Herringbone if: you want maximum colour choice (10 designs vs Tundra’s 4), you specifically want American Black Walnut in herringbone format, you want the matched plank equivalent for adjacent rooms, or the room isn’t over underfloor heating (where Tundra’s birch ply core matters most).
Choose Tundra Herringbone if: UFH is specified and long-term dimensional stability matters, you want the deeper 4mm veneer for longer refinishing life, one of the four Tundra colours (Smoked Oak, Seashell, Misty Grey, Thermo Oak) works for your scheme, or you plan to specify Tundra chevron or plank in adjacent rooms for a three-format matched specification.
Choose Tundra Chevron if: you want the contemporary V-pattern read rather than the classic herringbone weave, the floor is a design statement rather than a background surface and one of the four Tundra colours works for the scheme. Chevron sits at the top of V4’s pattern-flooring price tier at £129.99-£149.99/m2.
Installation, UFH and Warranty
Installation. All V4 pattern flooring (Deco Herringbone, Tundra Herringbone, Tundra Chevron) installs fully bonded only. Pattern layouts need adhesive to hold block tolerances over the floor’s lifetime – floating installations lose alignment over time, so V4 doesn’t offer floating for any pattern format. Bonded installation requires a flat, dry, well-prepared subfloor. Marginal subfloors typically need self-levelling compound before fitting – non-negotiable for pattern layouts because misalignment on a marginal subfloor shows up visibly in the pattern read.
UFH. All V4 pattern designs are UFH-compatible when installed correctly – surface temperature capped at 27 degrees C, gradual ramp-up protocol after fitting, appropriate adhesive for the UFH system, wet or electric UFH accepted. Tundra’s birch ply core delivers the best UFH heat transfer in the V4 range. See our engineered wood + UFH guide for the full commissioning protocol.
Warranty. All V4 pattern designs carry V4’s 35-year domestic guarantee subject to correct installation, use and maintenance. Grosvenor Flooring’s status as a V4 Gold Account approved retailer validates the manufacturer warranty on every V4 pattern floor supplied through us.
V4 Pattern Flooring Pricing
Supply-only prices (inc VAT, free UK mainland delivery):
- V4 Deco Herringbone (all 10 designs, ZB SKU): £89.99/m2
- V4 Tundra Herringbone (all 4 designs, TH SKU): £89.99/m2
- V4 Tundra Chevron Seashell / Misty Grey / Thermo Oak (CV104/105/106): £129.99/m2
- V4 Tundra Chevron Smoked Oak (CV103): £149.99/m2
Supply-and-fit within Grosvenor’s Altrincham, Manchester and Cheshire service area:
- Herringbone (Deco or Tundra): typical £30-45/m2 fitting premium over supply price. Fitted rate roughly £120-135/m2. Higher than straight plank because of tighter setting-out and more material waste.
- Chevron: highest fitting premium of any V4 format, typically £50-70/m2 over supply because of the 45-degree cutting complexity. Fitted rate roughly £180-210/m2 for coloured chevrons; £200-230/m2 for Smoked Oak Chevron.
Actual pricing depends on subfloor condition, room complexity and adhesive requirements. See our engineered wood installation cost guide for the full pricing framework.
V4 Herringbone vs Peer Brands
V4 vs Kährs Piazza (approximately £84-137/m2 RRP). Kährs Piazza is Kährs’ small-herringbone parquet collection at premium pricing. Both brands deliver premium herringbone in oak with tongue-and-groove joints. Kährs’ constructions run at 11mm total thickness with 3.5mm veneer – shallower veneer than Tundra Herringbone’s 4mm but deeper than Deco Herringbone’s 3mm. Kährs offers broader grade choice (AB clean grade and CD rustic grade); V4 offers matched-plank equivalents on Deco Herringbone that Piazza does not. Full detail in our Kährs flooring review.
V4 vs Ted Todd herringbone / chevron lines. Ted Todd’s pattern-format lines are typically priced above V4 pattern flooring and available only through Ted Todd’s approved retailers. If you have been to Ted Todd’s Warrington Design Centre and want to compare V4 Deco Herringbone or Tundra Chevron as a lower-priced UK-made alternative with equivalent construction, see our Ted Todd Warrington alternative guide.
V4 vs Nordikka Bodo herringbone (SPC). Nordikka Bodo is an SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) herringbone product – not real wood. Different category entirely. For real engineered wood herringbone V4 is the more direct comparison. For engineered wood versus SPC context see our LVT vs engineered wood flooring guide.
V4 vs GF own-brand engineered wood herringbone. Grosvenor’s own engineered wood herringbone range sits below V4 pattern flooring on pricing and offers a cost alternative for buyers who want the herringbone look at a lower spend. Direct cross-shop in our V4 vs GF engineered wood guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between V4 Deco Herringbone and V4 Tundra Herringbone?
Both cost £89.99/m2 supply. Deco offers 10 designs (broader colour choice) at 14mm total with 3mm veneer on a standard multi-layer core with matching plank equivalents in each colour. Tundra offers 4 designs (narrower choice) at 11mm total with a deeper 4mm veneer on a birch ply core (V4’s most UFH-friendly construction) with matching plank AND chevron equivalents in each colour. Choose Deco for colour choice; choose Tundra for deeper veneer, birch ply core UFH performance or a three-format matched specification.
Can I install V4 herringbone floating instead of bonded?
No. All V4 pattern flooring (Deco Herringbone, Tundra Herringbone, Tundra Chevron) is fully bonded only. Pattern layouts need adhesive to maintain block alignment across the floor’s lifetime. Floating installations lose tolerance over time and the pattern joints eventually gap. For floating engineered wood installations at similar pricing, V4 Alpine plank or Driftwood plank (with 5G click) are the alternatives. See our V4 Alpine guide or V4 Driftwood guide.
Is V4 chevron worth the extra money over herringbone?
Depends on the design brief. Chevron and herringbone are genuinely different pattern reads – chevron is more contemporary and design-forward, herringbone is more classic and traditional. If chevron is the design brief, the £40-60/m2 premium over Tundra Herringbone is proportional to the additional manufacturing complexity and material waste. If the room could be specified equally as either pattern, herringbone at £89.99/m2 delivers the same wood specification at lower cost.
Can I mix V4 Deco Herringbone with V4 Deco plank in the same house?
Yes – and V4 Deco is specifically designed for this. Nine of the ten Deco Herringbone designs have matching plank equivalents in the same wood, same finish and same 14mm construction. That lets you specify Deco plank in the main rooms and Deco Herringbone in the hallway or entrance with the two floors reading as one continuous wood specification. Only Unfinished Oak (ZB107) doesn’t have a matching plank equivalent.
Can I mix V4 Tundra Herringbone and V4 Tundra Chevron?
Yes. All four Tundra colours (Smoked Oak, Seashell, Misty Grey, Thermo Oak) run consistently across plank, herringbone AND chevron formats at matched 4mm veneer depth. You can specify Tundra plank in living rooms, Tundra Herringbone in the dining room and Tundra Chevron in the entrance hall and all three floors read as one continuous wood specification with format changes at the room thresholds. This is only possible with Tundra – Deco offers matched plank + herringbone but no chevron.
Is V4 herringbone suitable for underfloor heating?
Yes for both Deco Herringbone and Tundra Herringbone with V4’s standard UFH conditions – surface temperature capped at 27 degrees C, gradual ramp-up protocol after fitting, appropriate adhesive for UFH systems. Tundra Herringbone’s birch ply core delivers the best UFH heat transfer in the V4 range and is V4’s recommended specification for whole-floor UFH installations. See our engineered wood + UFH guide.
What size are V4 herringbone blocks?
V4 Deco Herringbone blocks are 90mm x 400mm reversible (universal A/B – each block can be installed as either the A or B orientation). V4 Tundra Herringbone blocks are 70mm x 490mm – narrower and longer than Deco. The size difference matters for pattern scale – Tundra reads as a slightly finer herringbone pattern in the room. Tundra Chevron blocks are 90mm x 610mm cut at 45 degrees at each end.
