Kahrs Flooring Review UK

Kahrs is one of the few engineered wood brands with a genuine claim to inventing the category. Swedish, founded in 1857, still family-influenced and the manufacturer that patented the world’s first engineered parquet floor in 1941. Almost every 3-layer parquet you can buy today traces its DNA back to that patent. This review pulls apart what Kahrs actually offers a UK buyer in 2026, where the range sits on price and quality, which collections we hold in our Altrincham Wood Room and how Kahrs compares against the other premium engineered wood brands we supply.

Key takeaways

  • Kahrs is the original inventor of engineered parquet flooring, patented 1941. The full range today runs to 217 products across 36 collections in the UK catalogue.
  • Construction spread: 3-layer parquet dominates (162 products), 2-layer parquet on the design-led ranges (27 products) and 3-layer veneer on the Kahrs Life sub-brand (26 products).
  • The Woodloc joint (both 5S and 5G variants) is Kahrs’ proprietary glue-less locking system. Original patent 2000. Around 175 of the 217 UK products use it.
  • Warranty is not blanket 35 years. It varies by collection: 30 years on Piazza, Large Herringbone and Smaland; 20 years on Ingresso; separate Kahrs Life terms on the veneer range.
  • Grosvenor Flooring holds physical samples from five Kahrs collections in the Altrincham Wood Room: Piazza (14 boards), Life Authentic Herringbone (all 4 colours), Smaland (Finnveden and Tveta), Da Capo (Indossati) and Ingresso (Grano and Calce).

Kahrs at a Glance

Kahrs sits in the premium engineered wood tier alongside Ted Todd, Woodpecker and V4. The brand was founded in 1857 in the deep forests of southern Sweden and started life as a general woodworking business before switching focus to flooring innovation. The pivotal moment was 1941, when Kahrs patented the first commercially available multi-layered engineered wood floor. That construction (a hardwood top layer bonded to a dimensionally stable core) is now the industry-standard build for virtually every engineered oak floor sold in the UK, whether Kahrs made it or not.

The 2026 UK catalogue runs to 217 products across 36 named collections. That is substantially broader than most premium competitors sell in the UK. For context, V4 fields roughly 60 products across seven collections at Grosvenor. Ted Todd’s UK-supplied range across engineered, solid, antique and reclaimed lines together adds up to a broadly similar figure to Kahrs but split across multiple categories, not a single engineered wood offer.

Species split across the 217 Kahrs UK products is oak-dominant at 200 products. Ash accounts for 9 products, walnut for 3, hard maple for 2 with single-product presences in beech, cherry and European maple. If you want anything other than oak from Kahrs, you are looking at a shortlist of curated ash lines or the occasional walnut design piece.

Kahrs Construction: Three Distinct Approaches

Kahrs runs three distinct construction types across the range. Understanding which one you are buying matters more than the collection name because it drives long-term stability, resandable life and whether the floor sits inside our recommended UFH envelope.

3-layer parquet (162 products, 15mm dominant). This is the classical Kahrs construction and the format their 1941 patent introduced. A hardwood oak top layer sits on top of a cross-directional slower-grown softwood core with a stabilising oak veneer on the underside. Woodloc 5S or 5G joints make installation floating or glue-down. This is the construction on Kahrs’ Life Authentic Plank, Smaland, European Naturals, Flora and most of the mid-tier and premium collections. It is the most dimensionally stable Kahrs build.

2-layer parquet (27 products, 11mm typical). Reserved for Kahrs’ design-led collections including Piazza and Large Herringbone. The oak top layer is bonded directly to a birch plywood core with no third stabilising layer. Joint is tongue and groove, installation is glue-down only. The trade-off is thinner overall build (11mm vs 15mm on the 3-layer collections) which suits refurb work where floor height is tight, in return for a genuinely premium visual finish with 4-sided micro-bevelling and a deep 3.5mm oak wear layer.

Veneer construction (26 products, Kahrs Life sub-brand). Life Authentic Plank and Life Authentic Herringbone use a thinner, harder oak veneer surface over a stability-optimised engineered core. Joint is Unifit X. Installation floating or glue-down. This is the format designed for renovation projects where budget matters more than resandable life and the numbers back it up: entry Life Authentic Plank pricing is roughly half what an equivalent Piazza board costs. It is still real oak on top, just a thinner top layer.

Wear layer thicknesses (the resandable oak layer only, not the whole board) run from around 0.6mm on the Life veneer range up to 3.5mm on the Piazza collections. Our engineered wood flooring thickness guide covers how wear layer maths translates into resandable life across brands including Kahrs.

The Woodloc Joint

Kahrs invented the world’s first glue-less locking joint for wood flooring in 2000. The system has two current variants:

  • Woodloc 5S is Kahrs’ primary system on their 3-layer parquet planks. Used on 99 products in the UK catalogue. Fits together in one movement, no tapping required for the majority of the pattern.
  • Woodloc 5G is the newer angle-in variant used on 74 products. Enables faster installation on longer boards.
  • Tongue and Groove is used on the 2-layer design ranges (Piazza, Large Herringbone) where glue-down is the only installation method anyway.
  • Unifit X is the Life Authentic Herringbone joint. Purpose-designed for pattern-format flooring.

The point of Woodloc for the end customer is straightforward: on any Kahrs floor with a Woodloc joint you have both floating and glue-down as options. That flexibility is worth having if your subfloor is uncertain, if you are laying over an existing screed you want to avoid gluing to, or if UFH commissioning constraints matter (see below).

Kahrs Collections Sampled at Grosvenor Flooring

We hold physical samples from five Kahrs collections in our Altrincham Wood Room. These are the five collections we recommend most actively because we can put the actual board in your hand under daylight before you commit to a spec.

Piazza Collection – 9 products, 14 samples in the Wood Room. Kahrs’ design-led 2-layer parquet range. 11mm total build, 3.5mm oak wear layer, 4-sided micro-bevel, brushed and oiled finish. Grades split between calm AB and expressive CD. Piazza is designed to be laid in the same room as Kahrs’ Large Herringbone range with Piazza used as a frame board for the herringbone pattern.

Life Authentic Herringbone Collection – 4 colours, all sampled. Kahrs’ entry into pattern-format flooring on the Kahrs Life veneer construction. All four colours (Chamomille, Mint, Sage, Ginseng) held in the Wood Room. Unifit X joint. Ultra matt lacquered oak veneer surface. Installation floating or glue-down. Best-in-class pricing for a herringbone floor on an established premium brand.

Smaland Collection – 8 products, Finnveden and Tveta sampled. 3-layer parquet, 1-strip 240mm wide plank. Each Smaland product named after a Swedish parish, hand-scraped surface with stains ranging from the transparent white on Klinta to the fully smoked coffee stain on Tveta. Woodloc 5S joint. 30-year warranty.

Da Capo Collection – 6 products, Indossati sampled. Rustic aesthetic 2-strip flooring, 15mm build, 195mm wide plank, oil-finished with heavy character. Da Capo is where Kahrs sits closest to Ted Todd’s antique and reclaimed positioning. Indossati is the sampled reference and the most heavily aged of the 6 products.

Ingresso Collection – 7 products, Grano (Matt and Oiled) plus Calce sampled. 14mm 3-layer parquet, 190mm wide plank, 2.5mm oak wear layer, brushed and micro-bevelled. Fold Down joint, floating or glue-down installation. Rustic Dynamic grading similar to Da Capo but with a slightly cleaner face and a pine/spruce core. Warranty is 20 years, reflecting the collection’s positioning as accessible-entry premium rather than headline flagship.

Kahrs Range Beyond What We Sample

Kahrs’ full 36-collection UK offer runs far beyond the five sampled ranges above. The other 31 collections span everything from the flagship Lux Collection (12 products, some of Kahrs’ most expensive parquet) through Beyond Retro (12 products, playful colour), European Naturals (11 wide-plank oak products), Flora (11 sustainable-positioned 1-strip planks named after wildflowers), Sand, Capital, Studio, Tres 3-strip, plus specialist collections like Boardwalk, Zen and Fauna.

We can order any current Kahrs product for supply at trade pricing, including collections we don’t hold physical samples for. We prefer to open the conversation from a sampled collection because the difference between reading a spec sheet and standing on the actual board tends to matter to Kahrs buyers, but the full range is available for order at any time.

Kahrs Price Positioning

Kahrs runs a wider price ladder than most premium engineered wood brands. Entry Life Authentic Plank comes in below the price of some mid-tier oak floors, while flagship Piazza AB Creme White sits at the top end of what UK buyers pay for premium engineered oak short of bespoke or antique product. Our Kahrs flooring prices guide covers per-collection pricing and how the ladder maps against V4, Ted Todd and Woodpecker for comparable spec.

In broad tier terms:

  • Entry tier (Life Authentic): around Kahrs’ most affordable entry into real oak flooring. Veneer construction, thinner wear layer, still a real hardwood surface.
  • Value-premium tier (Ingresso, Life Authentic Herringbone, Pure Oak Wide): where 3-layer parquet meets accessible pricing. This tier sits below Kahrs’ design-led collections but delivers the classical Kahrs build.
  • Design-led tier (Smaland, Da Capo, Latte Wide, Russet Wide): character-rich collections priced against the top of V4’s Deco and mid-tier Ted Todd Woodworks.
  • Flagship tier (Piazza, Large Herringbone, Lux, Classic Nouveau, Dublin): Kahrs’ premium finish on 2-layer or 3-layer parquet at design-focused pricing.

Kahrs and Underfloor Heating

All 217 Kahrs UK products are UFH-compatible when installed inside Kahrs’ commissioning envelope. In practical terms that means a 27 degrees C surface temperature ceiling, a stable subfloor RH before installation and the proper acclimatisation period.

Kahrs’ 3-layer parquet construction on the majority of the range gives the best dimensional stability under UFH thermal cycling of any engineered wood construction we sell. If you are specifying whole-house UFH beneath oak, Smaland, Ingresso and the Kahrs collections on the 3-layer build are our first-choice recommendation. Piazza and Large Herringbone are UFH-compatible but the 2-layer birch plywood core is slightly less forgiving of poorly-commissioned UFH systems than 3-layer parquet. Full commissioning guidance is in our engineered wood + underfloor heating guide.

Kahrs vs the Other Premium Engineered Wood Brands

The cleanest way to place Kahrs in the premium UK engineered wood market is against the three other premium brands we supply.

BrandCountryRange depth (UK products)Signature constructionSignature jointWarranty typical

WoodpeckerUKExtensive engineered range across nine named place-collectionsMulti-ply engineered oakWoodpecker proprietary click100-year (headline positioning)

Where Kahrs wins on the cross-shop:

  • Range breadth: 36 collections is a significantly deeper catalogue than V4 or Ted Todd or Woodpecker deliver in the UK. If your project needs an unusual colour or format Kahrs is more likely to have it in current catalogue.
  • Woodloc joint quality: Kahrs’ locking system is the market benchmark. V4 and Woodpecker use their own click systems that work well but Kahrs invented the category.
  • Established brand heritage: 1857 founding, 1941 engineered parquet patent, storefinder authority in the UK. Kahrs is the go-to spec-brand for architects and interior designers who want a brand name for their client-facing schedule.

Where each competitor wins over Kahrs on specific angles:

  • V4: cleaner UK pricing (drop-ship direct from Woking, no import layer) and the 35-year warranty is longer than Kahrs’ typical 30-year headline. For an unfussy 14mm British oak plank at premium spec V4 Alpine or V4 Deco is often the sharper buy. See our Kahrs vs GF comparison for the head-to-head on parquet builds.
  • Ted Todd: for antique or reclaimed spec Kahrs does not compete. Ted Todd’s antique lines are unique in the UK market. If your project needs real reclaimed oak that is Ted Todd’s territory not Kahrs’.
  • Woodpecker: the 100-year warranty headline is genuinely longer than Kahrs’ 30-year. For long-hold family homes where the warranty is a factor Woodpecker’s positioning is worth weighing.

If Kahrs is on your shortlist and you want to see the alternatives we supply at the same premium tier alongside it, our Kahrs alternative guide compares against V4, Ted Todd, Woodpecker and our own GF engineered wood range.

How Grosvenor Fits Kahrs Into a Real Project

Kahrs sells through approved retailers only, no direct-to-consumer online supply, no grey-market resellers. We are a Kahrs approved retailer in the North West. Our Kahrs offer at Grosvenor breaks down into three practical scenarios:

Supply-only across the UK. We supply Kahrs at trade pricing direct to your project address. This is the standard case for buyers outside the North West or for retail buyers doing their own fitting. The full 217-product Kahrs UK catalogue is available for order.

Supply-and-fit for Altrincham, Manchester and Cheshire. The regular team of fitters we know and trust cover the domestic North West catchment. Kahrs’ installation guidelines are what we fit to, warranty valid on completion. For herringbone installation on Life Authentic Herringbone or Large Herringbone we set out the pattern, agree the layout with you before starting and finish with edge borders in-collection where the room design calls for it.

Sample-first before spec. The five sampled Kahrs collections in the Wood Room are on show 24/7 through our smart-lock system. Request an access code online and visit when it suits you. For collections we don’t sample in the showroom we work from Kahrs’ physical sample boards direct.

Full context on how Kahrs specification maps to our supply-and-fit process is in our engineered wood installation guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kahrs the best engineered wood flooring brand?

Kahrs is one of a very small group (with Ted Todd, Woodpecker, V4, our own GF range and one or two others) that share the top of the UK premium engineered wood market. Which is best for you depends on aesthetic, project format and price ceiling. See our best engineered wood flooring UK hub for the direct comparison.

What is the Kahrs warranty?

Warranty varies by collection. Piazza, Large Herringbone and Smaland carry 30-year residential warranties. Ingresso is 20 years. Kahrs Life (veneer range) has separate terms in the Kahrs Life warranty documentation. Every warranty is valid only when the floor is supplied and fitted through an approved retailer inside Kahrs’ commissioning envelope.

Is Kahrs made in Sweden?

Yes. Kahrs’ main production is at Nybro in southern Sweden. Some of the wider Kahrs group brands are produced at other European sites but the core Kahrs UK catalogue is Swedish-made.

Can Kahrs be installed over underfloor heating?

All 217 Kahrs UK products are UFH-compatible. Kahrs’ 3-layer parquet build (the majority of the range) delivers the best UFH performance in the catalogue. Full commissioning protocol in our engineered wood + underfloor heating guide.

What makes Kahrs different from V4 or Ted Todd?

Kahrs invented the engineered wood category and their 36-collection catalogue is deeper than V4’s or Ted Todd’s UK offer. V4 is UK-made with a longer warranty on a leaner range. Ted Todd owns the antique and reclaimed corner of the market that Kahrs doesn’t compete in. Kahrs sits between them as the deep-catalogue Swedish premium spec brand.

Can I visit and see Kahrs samples?

Yes. We hold Piazza (14 samples), Life Authentic Herringbone (all 4 colours), Smaland (Finnveden, Tveta), Da Capo (Indossati) and Ingresso (Grano and Calce) in the Wood Room at our Altrincham smart showroom. Access is 24/7 via the smart-lock system with an access code requested online.

How does Kahrs pricing compare to other premium brands?

Kahrs runs a wider price ladder than most premium competitors. Entry Life Authentic sits below what V4 or Ted Todd charge for their entry ranges. Flagship Piazza AB pricing sits at the top of the UK premium engineered oak tier. Full detail in our Kahrs flooring prices guide.
