What Is the Kahrs Piazza Collection?

Piazza sits at the top of Kahrs’ design-led catalogue tier. Together with the Large Herringbone collection it is one of only two Kahrs UK collections built on the 2-layer parquet construction and it represents the deepest wear-layer specification Kahrs offers. Every Piazza board is a 3.5mm oak top layer bonded directly to a birch plywood core. There is no third stabilising layer between the oak and the core, which is what defines 2-layer as opposed to Kahrs’ more common 3-layer parquet construction.

The design intent behind Piazza is a premium visual finish that suits both traditional and contemporary interiors. 4-sided micro-bevelling emphasises the individual board profile. Brushing raises the oak grain for a slightly tactile surface. Oil finish (rather than lacquer) sits deeper into the wood and ages naturally over time, which is a key point of separation from Kahrs’ lacquered collections that maintain a more consistent surface throughout their service life.

The Piazza construction is consistent across all 9 products in the collection. Only grade, colour and finish variant differ. The specification table below applies to every Piazza board.

The 3.5mm oak wear layer is significantly deeper than most engineered oak collections at the same price point. For context, a typical Kahrs 3-layer parquet range on a 15mm total build sits around 3.5mm wear layer as well but only after subtracting the 11.5mm of core, backing and glue lines. V4 Alpine at 14mm total build carries a 3mm wear layer. Life Authentic Plank on the Kahrs Life veneer construction runs closer to 0.6mm wear. Piazza AB vs Piazza CD: Understanding the Grades

Kahrs Piazza splits across two grade families. AB is the calm grading, CD is the expressive grading. The construction is identical, the visual character is what changes.

Piazza AB (Calm grading). Carefully selected oak with moderate colour variations and few knots. Sap wood and heartwood variation is muted. Knots are small and infrequent. AB is the specification for buyers who want the premium tactile finish of Piazza without the visual busyness that some rustic oak collections carry. It sits at the flagship end of the Piazza price ladder.

Piazza CD (Dynamic grading). More expressive character with knots, sap variation and colour variations that read as full-character oak. Kahrs positions CD as the design-forward end of Piazza where visual character is part of the point of the specification. Priced lower than AB despite identical construction because the grading uses more of the oak yield.

For rooms where the floor is intended to sit quietly under contemporary furniture and art, AB grades tend to specify. For rooms where the floor is a design statement in its own right (kitchen-diners, open-plan living spaces, hospitality projects), CD grades tend to specify. Piazza and Kahrs Large Herringbone: The Design Pairing

Piazza is designed to be laid alongside Kahrs’ Large Herringbone collection. That is a deliberate design decision by Kahrs. The two collections share identical construction (2-layer parquet, 11mm build, 3.5mm oak wear layer), identical surface treatments and identical finish variants. The only structural difference is board size: Piazza is 180 x 1800mm plank, Large Herringbone is a smaller board sized for herringbone pattern.

The signature Kahrs high-end herringbone specification uses Piazza planks as frame boards around the Large Herringbone pattern. That gives a herringbone floor with a bordered edge in the same colour and grade as the pattern. It is what tends to specify on interior-designer-led projects where the herringbone floor is a design centrepiece rather than a value spec.

Installation and Underfloor Heating

Piazza is glue-down only. There is no floating installation option because the tongue and groove joint on Piazza isn’t a floating-compatible locking system like Woodloc. Full-adhesive installation over an appropriately prepared subfloor is the only fitting method Kahrs will warrant on Piazza.

For underfloor heating, Piazza is compatible when installed inside Kahrs’ commissioning envelope: 27 degrees C surface temperature ceiling, subfloor RH below Kahrs’ published limit before installation and the standard acclimatisation period. Piazza’s birch plywood core delivers reasonable stability under thermal cycling, though not as forgiving as Kahrs’ 3-layer parquet collections (Smaland, Ingresso, European Naturals) which are our first-choice specification for whole-floor UFH. For high-heat-load rooms or under-tile-heat specifications adjacent to Piazza, the 3-layer collections carry lower risk.

Warranty, Resandable Life and Long-Term Ownership

Piazza carries a 30-year residential warranty when supplied through Kahrs’ approved retailer channel and fitted to Kahrs’ installation guidelines. Commercial installations are covered under Kahrs’ separate commercial terms.

The 3.5mm oak wear layer supports two full re-sandings across the Piazza service life. That translates into significantly extended real-world ownership compared to a lacquered engineered oak floor where re-sanding to a natural surface is a one-shot process at best. Piazza’s oil finish also supports partial spot-restoration in high-wear zones without a full sanding cycle. The trade-off is that oil finishes require more active maintenance than modern ultra matt lacquered surfaces. Kahrs publishes specific oil-refresh guidelines that keep the surface aging predictably.

Where Piazza Fits in a Real Project

Piazza specifies well on projects with three characteristics:

Fixed floor build-up. The 11mm total build height is materially thinner than the 15mm-plus dominant across most premium engineered oak collections. That matters on refurb projects where door thresholds, skirting overrun and staircase heights are already set. Piazza can absorb into a floor build-up that a 15mm 3-layer parquet cannot without threshold rework.

Design-led specification. The 3.5mm oak wear layer, the oil finish and the 4-sided micro-bevel combine to give a floor that reads as premium close up. Piazza CD grades bring that specification in below the AB grades, which places them well against most direct alternatives at the design-led tier.

Long-term ownership. The 30-year warranty and two full re-sands make Piazza a good fit for family homes where the floor’s second decade matters as much as the first.

Is Piazza the same construction as Large Herringbone?

Can Kahrs Piazza be laid over underfloor heating?

Yes, when installed inside Kahrs’ UFH commissioning envelope. The 27 degrees C surface temperature ceiling applies. Kahrs’ 3-layer parquet collections like Smaland and Ingresso offer better dimensional performance under variable UFH but Piazza remains fully compatible. Can Piazza be sanded back?

Yes. The 3.5mm oak wear layer supports two full sanding cycles across the Piazza service life. The oil finish also supports partial spot-restoration in localised high-wear zones without a full re-sand.

Why is Piazza only 11mm thick?

Because it is 2-layer parquet rather than the more common 3-layer construction. There is no third stabilising layer on the underside. The trade-off is a thinner overall board that can absorb into low floor build-up scenarios in return for glue-down-only installation. For unrestricted build-up projects most buyers step up to Kahrs’ 15mm 3-layer parquet collections (Smaland, Ingresso, European Naturals).

Is Piazza worth the price premium over Kahrs Life Authentic?

They are engineered for different project types. Life Authentic Plank is the veneer-construction budget entry into Kahrs (roughly half the Piazza price). Piazza is the design-led 2-layer parquet with a real 3.5mm oak wear layer and two-shot re-sanding potential. For refurb work where budget is the constraint, Life Authentic is the answer.
