Kahrs Life Authentic Herringbone Construction and Specification
The Life Authentic Herringbone construction is consistent across all 4 colours. Only surface tone differs. The specification table below applies to every product in the collection.
The Kahrs Life veneer construction is fundamentally different from Kahrs’ 2-layer and 3-layer parquet builds. Rather than a 3.5mm sawn oak wear layer bonded to a wood core, Life Authentic uses a thinner oak veneer over a purpose-designed stability core. The surface is real hardwood, but much thinner than the top layer on Piazza or Smaland. That is what keeps the price down for a premium-brand herringbone.
The trade-off is on re-sanding. Kahrs Life veneer is not intended to be sanded back. If the floor is subjected to heavy wear over decades, replacement rather than restoration is the answer. For most domestic herringbone applications that trade-off is fine: herringbone floors are typically laid in dining rooms, hallways or living areas where the wear pattern is even and the surface holds up well over a typical ownership horizon.

The Four Life Authentic Herringbone Colours
All four Life Authentic Herringbone colours are named after plant tones that reflect the colour of the oak veneer. Each one is on display in the Altrincham Wood Room. The differences are subtle but real, so standing on the boards in daylight usually settles the choice quickly.
Oak Chamomille Herringbone (LTCLRW5001L-121). The lightest and warmest of the four colours. Named after chamomile flower tones. Sits toward the pale-cream end of the oak spectrum. Suits contemporary interiors and rooms where the floor is intended to brighten a neutral palette. Chamomille reads paler than Kahrs Life Authentic Plank Fennel or Nutmeg on the plank side of the collection.
Oak Mint Herringbone (LTCLRW5002L-121). A cool oak tone with a subtle greyish-green undertone. Named after mint leaf tones. Sits between Chamomille and Sage in overall colour temperature. Suits contemporary and Scandinavian-inspired interiors and pairs well with cool white walls and dark furniture accents.
Oak Sage Herringbone (LTCLRW5004L-121). Deeper than Mint but still cool-toned. Sage-leaf inspiration in the naming. The mid-cool option in the four-colour range. Works well in interiors where the floor should have colour presence without pushing warm brown.
Oak Ginseng Herringbone (LTCLRW5003L-121). The deepest oak tone in the collection. Warm mid-brown with subtle amber undertones. Named after ginseng root colouring. This is the traditional-oak-tone Life Authentic Herringbone and pairs comfortably with heritage interiors, period property refurbishment and classic material palettes.

The Unifit X Herringbone Joint
Life Authentic Herringbone uses Kahrs’ Unifit X joint system. Unifit X is Kahrs’ herringbone-specific locking mechanism, purpose-designed for pattern-format flooring where board orientation and precise angular alignment matter more than they do on straight plank installations.
The two key design points on Unifit X:
- Handedness pairs. Herringbone always ships as Left-hand and Right-hand board pairs. Every LTCLRW500x-121 product is the Left board; the Right board carries a matching R-suffix article number. The pattern setting-out requires both. Grosvenor supplies the L + R pair balance calculated against your room dimensions when quoting.
- Installation flexibility. Unlike some competitor herringbone joints that lock into one installation method only, Unifit X supports both floating and glue-down installation. This flexibility matters for buyers over dry screed subfloor (where floating is often preferable) versus over concrete or existing wood subfloor (where glue-down tends to specify).

Herringbone Installation: What Buyers Should Know
Herringbone flooring is not a like-for-like swap for straight plank flooring and pricing your project on straight plank m2 figures under-estimates both material need and fitting time.
Material waste. Herringbone pattern setting-out consumes more material per finished m2 than straight plank because pattern cuts at wall lines produce more offcuts than parallel-to-wall plank cutting. Budget approximately 10-15% additional material versus a straight plank calculation for the same room. For an unusually shaped room with multiple walls at non-90-degree angles that figure can climb further.
Fitting labour. Herringbone fitting takes materially longer per square metre than straight plank fitting. Setting-out the pattern centreline, cutting pattern boards to fit boundary lines and maintaining the 90-degree corner geometry all consume more labour hours than the equivalent straight plank installation. Frame borders. Kahrs’ Life Authentic Herringbone can be laid with a frame border of Kahrs Life Authentic Plank in a coordinated colour, or a contrasting plank colour if the design intent is a defined border. Underfloor heating. Life Authentic Herringbone is UFH-compatible up to 27 degrees C surface temperature. Kahrs’ 3-layer parquet ranges (Small European Naturals) deliver marginally better dimensional performance under variable UFH but Life Authentic Herringbone remains fully compatible. Life Authentic Herringbone vs Kahrs Large Herringbone
Kahrs’ catalogue has two herringbone collections. Life Authentic Herringbone (this guide) and the flagship Large Herringbone Collection. They differ across almost every specification axis.
The two collections are engineered for different project types. Life Authentic Herringbone is the answer for buyers who want herringbone on a premium brand at renovation-friendly pricing. Large Herringbone is the answer for buyers who want herringbone as a flagship spec with the full 3.5mm oak wear layer and 30-year warranty. For pattern-projects where Piazza planks will be used as frame borders around the herringbone, the answer has to be Large Herringbone because Piazza and Large Herringbone share the 2-layer parquet build that Life Authentic Herringbone doesn’t match. Life Authentic Herringbone Pricing
We quote Life Authentic Herringbone on request, supply only or supply and fit. Herringbone needs extra material (10 to 15% above the room area for pattern waste), which the quote works out from your room dimensions. Where Life Authentic Herringbone Fits in a Real Project
Life Authentic Herringbone specifies well on projects with three characteristics:
A herringbone look on a renovation budget. If the brief is a herringbone floor but the budget cannot stretch to 2-layer or 3-layer parquet, Life Authentic Herringbone is often the cleanest answer. It costs well below the parquet herringbones from other established premium brands.
Underfloor heating with acclimatisation flexibility. The floating installation option means fitting doesn’t require gluing to an underlying UFH screed, which some UFH commissioning specifications discourage. For UFH-first specifications where floating installation is preferred, Life Authentic Herringbone works cleanly. Piazza and Large Herringbone are glue-down only which removes that flexibility.
Modest-scale rooms. Herringbone floors read best in rooms of moderate scale (10-30 m2) where the pattern registers visually across the room. In very large open-plan areas herringbone can become visually restless; in very small rooms the pattern doesn’t have space to establish.
