Engineered wood flooring in Chester – Grosvenor Flooring

Your project is handled by Blake Williams, our Operations Director. Blake is Chester born and bred and lives in Tarvin. He visits your home, checks the subfloor for moisture and level and puts a full written price in front of you before anything is ordered.

Why Engineered Rather Than Solid Wood?

An engineered board has a real oak top layer bonded to a multi-ply core. That construction moves far less than solid timber as the heating goes on and off, which matters in Chester’s older houses where radiators run hard all winter. It is also the better choice over underfloor heating. You still get genuine wood that can be sanded and refinished in years to come.

GF Engineered Oak

GF engineered wood is our own collection of around 60 oak floors in planks, herringbone and Versailles panels. Every board has a real European oak wear layer on a stable multi-ply core and all of them suit underfloor heating. Read our GF engineered wood review for the full specification.

We created GF after two decades of selling the premium brands. If a V4, Ted Todd or Woodpecker floor has caught your eye, there is usually a GF board that is very close for considerably less. See Ted Todd vs GF, Woodpecker vs GF and Kahrs vs GF.

Kahrs, Parador and V4

Kahrs comes from Sweden and is best known for click engineered oak. Our Kahrs review explains its ranges.
Parador is German and has a strong line-up of planks and herringbone. See the Parador ranges guide.
V4 is a popular British brand offering planks and herringbone in a big choice of finishes.

Choosing a Format for a Chester Home

Chester’s period houses give engineered wood plenty to work with. A herringbone hallway suits a Victorian terrace in Hoole. Versailles panels can transform a large reception room in Curzon Park or Queens Park. A Georgian townhouse near the walls often looks best with wide, lightly brushed planks. In a barn conversion in Christleton or Tattenhall, a rustic grade with character knots feels right at home. Our guide to the best engineered wood for period properties has more ideas.

How We Fit Engineered Wood

Wood is a natural material, so the checks come first. Blake measures moisture in the subfloor, looks for dips and decides on the fitting method: glued down, floated over an underlay or secret-nailed to timber. The boards are delivered ahead of fitting so they can settle to the room’s temperature and humidity. Herringbone and Versailles take careful setting out from the centre of the room.

If you have underfloor heating, our underfloor heating guide covers what to check. A regular team of fitters we know and trust lays the floor across the CH1 to CH4 postcodes. The engineered wood floor fitter page goes into more detail.

Booking a Home Visit

The visit is free and jobs of every size are welcome. Blake qualified as an accountant at Baker Tilly before joining the family business, so your quote will list the boards, underlay or adhesive, preparation, fitting, skirting or beading and disposal separately. Contact us with your postcode to arrange a time.

Can I See Engineered Wood Before I Buy?

Yes. GF, Kahrs, Parador and V4 are laid out in full-size boards in the Wood Room at our Altrincham showroom, 82 Stamford New Road, about 45 minutes from Chester via the M56. Compare a smoked oak with a natural one, or an oiled finish with a matt lacquer, under daylight. The showroom is a 24/7 Smart Showroom, so request a door code and visit whenever suits. Our Wood Room guide explains what is on display.

What Does Engineered Wood Cost in Chester?

The board itself varies with brand, grade, finish, thickness and format. Then the room comes in: its size and shape, the preparation needed, the fitting method, skirting, thresholds and removal of the old floor. A herringbone or Versailles floor costs more to lay than straight planks. Blake shows every element in his written quote. Our installation cost guide and engineered wood prices guide explain the factors.

Engineered Wood or LVT?

Real wood brings warmth and character and can be refinished. LVT is waterproof and shrugs off heavy wear. Many Chester homeowners use wood in the living room and bedrooms and LVT in the kitchen and bathroom. Our LVT vs engineered wood guide compares them and our guide to LVT flooring in Chester covers the vinyl side.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I buy engineered wood flooring in Chester?

Grosvenor Flooring supplies and fits GF, Kahrs, Parador and V4 engineered wood across Chester. Blake Williams visits your home and the boards are on display in our Wood Room.

Can engineered wood be sanded?

Yes. The real oak top layer can be sanded and refinished. How many times depends on its thickness, which varies between boards.

Is engineered wood better than solid wood?

For most modern homes, yes. It is more stable as temperature and humidity change and it works better with underfloor heating.

Should I choose herringbone or Versailles for a period room?

Herringbone suits halls and narrower rooms. Versailles panels make a statement in large reception rooms. Blake can advise on what will suit your proportions.

Is GF engineered wood as good as V4, Ted Todd or Woodpecker?

In most cases GF offers a comparable construction, finish and wear layer for noticeably less. Bring a sample or quote to the Wood Room and compare.

Can I have engineered wood in a kitchen?

Many people do. Choose a durable finish and wipe up spills promptly. It is not waterproof, so for bathrooms and utility rooms we usually recommend LVT.

Who fits engineered wood flooring in Chester?

We do. Blake surveys the job and a regular team of fitters we know and trust lays the boards, including herringbone and Versailles.

Are samples free?

Yes on our own GF range. Kahrs, Parador and V4 are on full-size display in the Wood Room.
