Kahrs and Ted Todd are both premium wood flooring names, but they come at the market from different directions. Kahrs is a Swedish manufacturer that built its name on factory-made engineered parquet. Ted Todd is a British brand best known for design-led oak, thick two-layer boards and its antique and reclaimed lines. We can supply both, so this guide sets out where each one makes sense.

Two different ways of making a premium floor

Kahrs invented the engineered parquet floor in 1941 and still builds most of its range as 3-layer parquet: an oak top layer on a cross-laid core that stays stable as the seasons change. Its design-led Piazza range uses a 2-layer build with a 3.5mm oak top. The Kahrs Life range uses a thin oak veneer for renovation budgets. Most Kahrs floors use the Woodloc click joint, so they can be floated or glued.

Ted Todd leans on a 2-layer build for its premium ranges: a thick oak top bonded to a birch plywood base. On its flagship boards that top layer reaches around 6mm, which gives a sanding life close to a solid floor. Alongside the engineered ranges, Ted Todd sells solid wood and antique and reclaimed boards, which Kahrs does not.

You want plenty of choice in one brand. Kahrs’ UK catalogue runs to more than 200 engineered products across 36 collections, from calm Nordic oak to smoked and hand-scraped boards.

You want to see the floor before you buy. Our Wood Room holds Kahrs from the Piazza, Life Authentic Herringbone, Ingresso, Smaland and Da Capo collections, open 24/7.

You want an affordable premium herringbone. Kahrs Life Authentic Herringbone comes in four colours at a price well below most premium-brand parquet herringbones.

You like a Nordic look. Smaland’s wide, hand-scraped planks and Piazza’s pale and smoked finishes suit pared-back interiors.

When Ted Todd is the better fit

You want the thickest oak you can get. Ted Todd’s flagship 2-layer boards carry far more sandable oak than most engineered floors.

You want real reclaimed timber. If the brief is genuinely old oak with its own history, Ted Todd’s reclaimed and antique lines are the place to look. Kahrs Da Capo gives a convincing aged look, but it is new oak treated to look old.

You need solid wood in the same scheme. Ted Todd can supply solid boards alongside engineered ones.

Your designer has specified it. Ted Todd is a familiar name in British interior design, especially for period and country homes.

Ted Todd is quoted per project. We supply it across the UK and fit it across Altrincham, Manchester and Cheshire using a regular team of fitters we know and trust. It is not on display in our showroom, so we work from the brand’s specifications and photographs.
